Five key ways to get writing authentically:
1. Freeing yourself (punctuated free writing in 15 minute bursts is a fantastic exercise).
2. Motivating yourself to write
3. Setting goals for writing may help (perhaps even numerical objectives can?number of stories?number of words?or number of pages). I don?t think this is something to get tied up on.
4. Find an environment where you can be free (I like to write pen to paper most of the time. I sometimes go to a coffee shop or an outdoor cafe to write?both can be helpful).
5. Just do it. Take the leap. Take the jump. Just do it. Act in the now.
Seven other suggestions about writing authentically to keep in mind:
1. Getting feedback from those who know you and will hold you accountable for being authentic, honest, and transparent.
2. Read other writers or creatives who write in this way (authentically). If they can do it, there is no reason you can?t. However, remember to focus on your writing and leaving time for creating product (aka writing). Your feelings, intuitions, etc on the page.
3. Consider getting a writers group together. Having a group to be accountable to and share problems and solutions can be helpful. It also can be a way to generate feedback about the creative process.
4. There are various ways you can use technology to help you?for instance I just got Dragon Speaking for Mac, which has a speech to text function. I still think my favorite method will be pen to paper?but its a nice supplement. Obviously, a cheaper method is just use a voice recorder (either on your computer) or a hand held or on your mobile device.
5. Saving editing for another week or another day. Editing is a critically important part of the journey, but for now a project for another day, week, or month.
6. Watch the video on vulnerability. Its quite good.
7. Consider having a conversation with a relative or a friend and recording that. It may allow you to be vulnerable or free in a way you?re not allow yourself to be now. Record that conversation.
