Trade union in listing dispute wins reprieve

A new trade union to champion the welfare of parastatal workers has won temporary reprieve after the High Court stayed a government decision to revoke its registration.

Lady Justice Monica Mbaru last Friday stopped the government from interfering with the activities of the National Union of Kenya Parastatal Employees (Nukpe) until a case it has filed is heard and determined.

Nukpe was discreetly registered on July 9 , but its certificate was withdrawn three weeks later following protests from existing trade unions that it was poaching its members.

?That there be stay of the decision of the registrar of trade unions dated July 26 to have the issues herein heard and determined by all parties,? ordered Lady Justice Mbaru.

The ruling means that Nukpe can continue enlisting workers employed in State-owned corporations over the next six months. The case is set for hearing on September 30.

?We will now begin promoting the union and signing up members,? said Nukpe interim secretary-general Simion Kirui.

He argued that the welfare of parastatal employees is not adequately catered for by existing trade unions which are dominated by private sector employees.

Cotu and two unions, which represent parastatal workers ? Kenya Electrical Trades and Allied Workers Union and Kenya Union of Commercial, Food and Allied Workers ? wrote to the registrar of trade unions protesting the move to register a rival lobby.
