TOWN OF ULSTER >> Supervisor James Quigley on Thursday will seek the town Republican Party endorsement for re-election.
The two-term incumbent, who in July said he was ending his career in public office, said Monday the decision to seek re-election was made because he was approached by community representatives with concerns that changes made during the past four years would be lost under a different administration.
?A long line of concerned citizens, including some elderly women who brought me cookies, community leaders, fire departments, other organizations and the normal politicians came to me and the picture that was painted was one ?what have you accomplished and where will it be in two years??? he said. ?I still need to finish the painting.?
Quigley, 56, of 7 Tall Oaks Drive, is a former partner in Rothschild Realty Management LLC in New York City. He ran unsuccessfully for Ulster County comptroller in 2008 before unseating two-term Democrat Nicky Woerner for the town supervisor?s job in 2009 and ran uncontested in 2011.
?What I?ve learned over the past four years is that this is a constantly changing situation and the problems never seem to go away,? he said.
?My biggest discouragement relates to the fact that I feel like a little boy sitting by the seashore trying to build a sand castle and the waves keep coming in and they don?t stop,? Quigley said. ?You can?t stop the waves from coming in and you can?t stop the challenges and the daily changes that are going on in government. In private industry we had the ability, we finished the project, we moved on to a different project.?
Quigley, who is paid a $45,000 annual salary, said he has put in about 80 hours per week. He noted there were concessions needed to convince his family to support another run for office.
?My wife made me promise that I wouldn?t work Sundays any more,? he said. ?She also made me promise when I go away on vacation in the winter this year that I am truly going away and will not let myself be burdened by the responsibilities of the town. I have to learn how to let go a little bit.?
Republicans are scheduled to caucus 6 p.m. Thursday in Miller Middle School while Democrats are expected to meet Sept. 16 in Russell Brott Senior Citizens Center on Town Hall Drive.
In July, the day after taking himself out of the race for Ulster County comptroller, Quigley said he was ending his career in public office and would step down as town supervisor when his term expires in December. He said he decided to leave public life behind after getting an offer to pursue an opportunity in the private sector. He said he hadn?t decided whether to pursue that opportunity, which he declined to discuss. Continued...
