YPSILANTI ?During the second installment of a three-part series of fundraising golf outings, Eastern Michigan University raised more than $34,000 towards its $100,000 goal to fund the Greg O'Dell Criminal Justice scholarship program. The scholarship was set up in 2012 to honor O'Dell, the former chief of police at Eastern who died on Dec. 23, 2011. The scholarship program seeks to "Keep His Dream Alive" and offers financial aid in O'Dell's name to students at EMU's criminal justice program.
O'Dell, a 1992 graduate from Eastern, became the executive director of the university's Department of Public Safety in 2008, after working with the Ann Arbor Police as deputy chief for four years. He served in the Ann Arbor Police Department for nearly 20 years.
The 2013 Greg O'Dell Golf Outing was hosted at the EMU Eagle Crest golf course, at 1275 S. Huron St., on Sept. 20. The event featured dinner, a speaking reception, a raffle and a silent auction.
Last year's inaugural golf outing brought in more than $40,000, including a $15,000 contribution from the tournament's main sponsor, AT&T. The two events put the university more than two-thirds of the way to its goal, with one year left of fundraising.
The first gift from the scholarship program was awarded earlier this year to EMU senior Brooke O'Neil. She was given $4,000 to help pay for her tuition.
"It's definitely a surprise and an honor," O'Neil said during an interview in June. O'Neil, a full-time student, hails from St. Claire Shores and is active in Relay for Life and the Sigma Delta Tau Sororoity. She carries a 3.96 GPA at the university and plans to become a professor of criminology.
"Teaching criminology would give me the ability to show others how much it affects our everyday lives, and will allow me to show people that the field is vastly different from how it is portrayed in the media through TV and in movies," O'Neil said, according to a statement from EMU.
One final golf outing will take place at the Eagle Crest golf course in September 2014. To make a donation for the scholarship fund, visit the EMU Foundation website at https://www.emufoundation.org/index.php/public-give.html?fund=01954.
