Juice Not More Healthful Than Whole FruitChildren's Health and ...

From SF Gate?..

Myth: Drinking juice is more healthful than eating whole fruit.

Fact: Substituting juice for food seems to be one of the health fads of 2012. Celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow and Salma Hayek tout the benefits of juice diets, and there have been more Google searches for juicer appliances and recipes this year than ever before. But despite juice?s popularity, it does not have as much nutritional value as whole fruit.

A 2012 study from the University of Washington?s Center for Public Health and Nutrition revealed the top three most commonly consumed fruits (banana, apple and orange) had 25 to 32 percent more fiber than the average juice. Much of fruit?s fiber is in the peel or the pulp and is eliminated in the juicing process. Whole fruit also had an average of 56 fewer calories than a serving of their juice counterparts.

Another thing: Whole fruit satisfies hunger better than juice, researchers have found. Participants in a 2008 Penn State study ate 125 calories of either apple slices, applesauce, apple juice with added fiber or apple juice with no fiber. Researchers served participants cheese tortellini with tomato sauce 15 minutes later, and those who had eaten the apple consumed 187 fewer calories than those who had consumed the applesauce or either juice.
