?In my experience as a fitness coach, I would say that one of the most common pitfalls for people working to improve and maintain their health and fitness is that their vision for what needs to happen, and how long it will take is far too limited in scope.? And while most of us are not training for a potential dance on the podium, it turns out that there are a lot of similarities between what Olympic athletes do with their training programs, and what we have to do to stay in top physical shape for life.?? -John Ashworth, Owner, The Fitness Nomad
While the volume of training performed by Olympic athletes is not necessary for the every day fitness enthusiast, success does require the same level of consistency and commitment to the process. As beach volleyball player Phil Dalhausser, and swimmer Amanda Weir pointed out in a recent article I read, staying fit is a daily duty.
In this article, both athletes talked about all of the same concepts I discuss with clients every day, but that many people don?t implement regularly, and which ultimately and significantly inhibits their results.? Once again, while you don?t need to train as hard and as often and as many times a day that they do, you do need to consider the same important aspects of your training program which include all of the following:
- the importance of rest days
- doing what you need to to protect your body from injury and
- foster adequate recovery
- the importance of training ALL energy systems of the body and for cycling your training program over the course of the year
- the importance of your commitment to the process
- the vital importance of nutrition
- the importance of some type of flexibility and core strengthening program
Both of these athletes and multiple others drive home these important concepts over and over again.? And while you might be quick to dismiss this comparison, because unlike these athletes you don?t have the luxury of devoting your full-time effort to your health and fitness program, the truth is that unless you do place that level of importance on your health, fitness and nutrition program, you will in fact continue to struggle to get the kind of results most people desire from their efforts.
The only real difference between you and me and world class athletes is that they train more often and with greater intensity.? This ultimately means that they need even more focus on nutrition, injury prevention, rest and recovery, and everything else mentioned in the list above.? Which means that? even though we have our every day lives to manage along with our training programs, they probably still uphold a more demanding, time intensive, and exhausting schedule.? Which means that when it all comes down to it, the unspoken difference is more about a level of focus, desire, and commitment than it is about available time within our lives.
We all fully understand the importance of this commitment when we are talking about world class athletes.? For some reason, we are very often too quick to dismiss the same level of importance when it comes to our own pursuit of individual health, fitness, and weight loss goals.? It might not seem like it, but your decision, conscious or not, to go about your health and fitness in a haphazard and dismissive way ultimately has just as much impact on your life and your overall health as it would for a world class athlete racing and competing against opponents for mere inches or hundreds of a second.
No one will hang a gold medal around your neck for doing it either.? Because ultimately, your competition is always running?
-John
PS? The photo above is of me (far left), my Mom (holding a real Olympic torch), and the rest of my brothers and sisters when my Mom had the ultimate life experience of running with the Olympic torch back in 1984.? Thrilling?the Olympics bring about the best in all of us I think.
