The image above is a detail of ?Over the Falls ? The 999? by Michigan sculptor Alexander Buchan. The painted bronze work chronicles the legendary racer built by Henry Ford and driven to victory by Barney Oldfield. The auto looks as if it were ready to leap into space, echoing Ford?s words: ?Going over Niagara Falls would have been but a pasttime.? The work is among more than a dozen examples of historic automotive sculptures by Buchan on exhibit as part of the 2012 Concours d?Elegance Invitational Art Exhibit.
In the 1920s the first Concours d?Elegance was staged as an elegant marketing effort in France. The custom automobile coach builders and fashion couturiers of Paris were making luxury products of important design and wanted a new and different way to reach their markets. In an effort to create a unique way to reach the market, an idea was developed of a grand exhibition combining both automobiles and fashion.
Different than its past Concours forerunners, the aim of Concours d?Elegance of America is to exhibit prestigious collector cars as well as offer an automotive art exhibition, a vintage car auction, Mode du Concours and social events.
For its first 33 years, the Concours d?Elegance of America was held at Oakland University?s Meadow Brook Hall. Beginning in 2011 this world-class event has been held on the grounds of the Inn at St. John?s in Plymouth, Michigan.
