Obama: 7 proposed regulations would each top $1B (AP)

WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama says his administration is considering seven new government regulations that would cost the economy more than $1 billion each a year, a tally Republicans will pounce on to argue that Congress needs the power to approve costly government rules.

In a letter to House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, Obama lists four proposed Environmental Protection Agency rules and three Transportation Department rules estimated to cost in excess of $1 billion. One of the proposed EPA rules ? an update to the health-based standard for smog ? is estimated to cost the economy between $19 billion and $90 billion.

The letter, dated Tuesday, comes as the Republican-controlled House prepares to consider legislation that would require congressional approval for any new regulations that would impose a significant cost on industries.

The four environmental regulations, which target air pollution and coal residue primarily from coal-fired power plants, already have been attacked by House Republicans, who have said they would kill jobs and harm the economy.

A federal court ordered the Obama administration to propose two of the four environmental rules.

And while the regulations would be expensive to comply with, EPA officials say they will save billions of dollars in avoided health care costs each year by reducing asthma and other illnesses, such as cancer. In some cases, the cost savings are greater than the upfront expense, according to EPA figures.

Obama's letter was in response to a Boehner request last week for more details from the president on the proposed costs of the most expensive regulations under consideration by his administration. Obama's administration has identified 219 proposed regulations this year with a cost to the economy of more than $100 million each.

Boehner, in a statement, said the administration should now release detailed cost estimates for all those proposed regulations.

"At a time like this, with our economy struggling to create jobs, it's misguided for the federal government to be imposing so many new rules with such enormous costs, even when some of those rules may be well-intentioned," he said.

Obama said a number of regulations being contemplated are in such preliminary stages of review that they have no reliable cost estimates.

The president said the seven proposals he did identify are not final and that his administration will "give careful consideration" to cost-savings. He said his administration already has made changes that have saved more than $10 billion in regulatory costs over the next five years, and said new regulations must meet cost-saving requirements that he ordered earlier this year.

He also defended his regulatory record, saying the cost of final rules adopted in 2007 and 2008, during the administration of President George W. Bush, were higher than in the first two years of his administration.

"In 2009 and 2010, the benefits of such rules ? including not only monetary savings but also lives saved and illnesses prevented ? exceeded the costs by tens of billions of dollars," Obama wrote.

Last summer, at E3 2011 in Los Angeles, Razer unveiled their specially made keyboard designed to play Bioware?s Star Wars: The Old Republic. Now, in Seattle, PaxPrime 2011 was the place where Razer unveiled their Blade.

The Razer Blade is a 17.3-inch gaming laptop that has a fast Intel Core i7 processor and high performance NVIDIA GeForce graphic processor designed from a lightweight aluminum chassis.

The Blade also has a Switchblade User Interface, which has a has 10 adaptive tactile keys. Each one has the ability to be a tiny screen in and of itself. There is also a multi-touch LCD panel that is made to work like a touchpad, and it can display important gaming information like maps in MMOs.

Razer claims that its Blade is a thinner than less than half that of current mobile gaming systems at 0.88 inches. It also weighs in at 6.97 lbs, much lighter than most gaming laptops.

Other features include an integrated 60 Wh Battery, 320GB 7200rpm SATA HDD, Wireless Network 802.11 b/g/n compatible, as well as a built-in HD Webcam.

Safety of UN Nigeria HQ in question after bombing (AP)

ABUJA, Nigeria ? Two top U.N. officials offered conflicting views Sunday on the safety of its Nigeria headquarters after a suicide car bombing there, as the world body paused to mourn the 23 people killed in the attack claimed by a radical Muslim sect.

U.N. security chief Gregory Starr acknowledged that safety features "could have been better" to stop the speeding sedan loaded with explosives. But only hours later, U.N. Deputy Secretary-General Asha-Rose Migiro told journalists that the building had "really, really tight" security.

Migiro earlier laid bouquets of red and white roses near a U.N. flag flying at half staff at the site of Friday's attack, along with Nigeria's foreign minister and the body's acting local representative. She promised the U.N. would continue its work no matter what in Nigeria, an oil-rich country of 150 million people now violently divided by religion and ethnicity.

"We cannot allow ourselves to be intimidated by terrorism," Migiro said.

A suicide bomber rammed through two sets of gates to reach the U.N. building's glass reception hall. There, the bomber detonated explosives powerful enough to bring down parts of the concrete structure and blow out glass windows from other buildings in the quiet neighborhood filled with diplomatic posts.

While U.N. guards weren't armed, Starr said the Nigerian government provided the compound armed security. It remains unclear how those forces responded, though Nigeria's federal police are more known for asking for bribes and intimidating civilians than protecting the public.

The U.N. also had no specific intelligence or information about Boko Haram, the radical Muslim sect from Nigeria's northeast that claimed responsibility for the attack.

"We had some general threats worldwide and some very mixed, general threat information about the environment" in Nigeria, Starr told The Associated Press. "But no, (we had) no advanced warning."

The U.N. compound had a long driveway that allowed the suicide bomber to pick up speed, Starr acknowledged. The gates were not heavy, as Migiro shook them herself while touring the rubble-strewn grounds. The gates also did not have one-way traffic spikes nor any additional barriers to stop a speeding vehicle.

Despite that, Migiro said the building's security remained strong enough to provide protection while allowing the public access to the U.N.

"If people are plotting, no matter what we're doing, we may continue to be targets," she said.

The death toll for the attack rose Sunday to 23 people killed, said Martin Dawes, a U.N. spokesman attending the trip. Dawes said another 81 people were wounded in the attack. Burial arrangements were still being made for the dead, who included Nigerians, a Kenyan and a citizen of Ivory Coast, Migiro said.

Friday's attack was the first suicide attack targeting foreigners by Boko Haram, a group which has reported links to African terror groups al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb and al-Shabab of Somalia. The sect wants to implement a strict version of Shariah law in the nation and is vehemently opposed to Western education and culture.

Boko Haram vowed Saturday to commit future attacks. Hours earlier Saturday, President Goodluck Jonathan promised to bring terrorism in the oil-rich nation "under control."

However, Jonathan's weakened government has so far been unable to stop Boko Haram from carrying out assassinations and bombings at will. The sect is responsible for a rash of killings targeting security officers, local leaders and clerics near Nigeria's volatile northeastern city of Maiduguri over the last year. The group also claimed responsibility for a bombing at national police headquarters that killed at least two people in June.

The group continued its wave of violence Sunday. In Maiduguri, gunmen shot and killed a local politician, the latest assassination to be blamed on the group. In Bauchi, authorities said suspected sect members threw a bomb into the home of a former minister of police in the nation, damaging the house, but not injuring anyone.

Nigeria, a country largely split between a Christian south and Muslim north, remains desperately poor after decades of oil wealth being squandered by its political elite. That poverty has spread resentment throughout the north in recent years, fueling membership in extremist groups like Boko Haram.

Migiro, of Tanzania, also visited Abuja's National Hospital on Sunday, where many of the wounded were treated after the blast. Wearing a surgical mask, she walked among hospital beds in the hospital's intensive care unit. Some of the wounded still had shrapnel in their bodies.

She stopped at one bed, where a U.N. employee named Fred Willis was waiting to go into surgery for a second time.

"Hope you get better," Migiro said, waving her hand over his body in a motion of prayer.

His oxygen mask removed, Willis could only softly reply: "Thank you."

Hurricane Irene Looks 'Terrifying' From Space, Astronaut Says (SPACE.com)

Hurricane Irene is bearing down on the U.S. East Coast and has turned into a frightening storm, according to an astronaut on the International Space Station.

NASA astronaut Mike Fossum said that Hurricane Irene, like all hurricanes, looks "terrifying from above," and its evolution into a major storm this week has been unmistakable from orbit.

"We saw a big change in the structure of the storm over the several days that we've watched her, especially yesterday," Fossum told SPACE.com today (Aug. 25) during a video interview from space.

Hurricane Irene is currently a Category 3 storm with winds of 115 mph (185 kph) that is battering the Bahamas. Space station astronauts and satellites have kept a constant watch on the growing storm. [Photos: Hurricane Irene Views From Space]

The storm is expected to hit the North Carolina coast on Saturday (Aug. 27) and follow the coastline north, where it may make landfall on Long Island, posing a threat to New York City, according to OurAmazingPlanet, a sister site of SPACE.com.

Fossum, a native of Texas who has seen many hurricanes from the ground and space, said that two days ago the eye of Hurricane Irene wasn't as stable as it appears now. The storm has grown more organized and uniform as this week wore on, he added.

"There's kind of a dome shape to the whole thing, with the eye fully formed," Fossum said. "Yesterday you could see the eye wall and down into the eye itself. You know that is a powerful storm, and those are never good news when they're headed your way. So our prayers and thoughts are with the people in its path."

Fossum is one of six astronauts living aboard the International Space Station and is in the middle of a six-month spaceflight. His crewmate Ron Garan, also of NASA, has been posting photos of Irene from orbit each day as the space station has been flying over the huge storm.

NASA is also broadcasting live views of Hurricane Irene from the space station when the orbiting lab sails over the storm.

Hurricane Irene getting bigger, stronger

Hurricane Irene strengthened to a Category 2 hurricane Monday. Forecasts show it will miss Florida, but Irene may grow as it moves toward the Carolinas.

Hurricane Irene was expected to strengthen over the next few days and could hit the southeastern United States as a large and powerful storm late in the week, forecasters said Tuesday.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center's forecast indicated Irene, now classified as a Category 2 storm, may become a major Category 3 storm, with winds over 111 mph, before hitting the southeast U.S. coast by the weekend.

The first hurricane of the 2011 Atlantic season, which was as large as it was intense, was expected to swing parallel to Florida's east coast Thursday for a possible landfall in North or South Carolina Saturday.

Irene, the ninth named storm of the busy 2011 Atlantic season, looks set to be the first hurricane to hit the United States since Ike savaged the Texas coast in 2008.

The storm's core was expected to pass north of the Dominican Republic and Haiti early Tuesday and the southeastern Bahamas by late in the day. It was moving to the west-northest at 12 mph. Hurricane-force winds extended outward from the core to 50 miles and tropical storm-force winds extended out up to 205 miles.

The storm could be the catalyst the insurance industry has been seeking in its quest for across-the-board premium increases, in what already promises to be the costliest year in history for natural disasters around the globe.

Authorities along the U.S. Atlantic seaboard, from Miami to New York, were closely watching Irene's possible path, with at least some computer forecast models showing it might even sweep up near New York City early next week.

President Barack Obama was briefed about Irene while on vacation at the Massachusetts island of Martha's Vineyard, White House officials said.

This 30 minute PLL program quickly reviewed the fee-based and free resources we may consult to help us determine the best resources for reliable patent statistics. Amy Wisinski, of Winning the Case, sped through a number of resources which I will briefly summarize.

The USPTO has added a new Patent Dashboard to their statistical analysis page. This is visually appealing but summarizes only recent activity. The USPTO continues to offer statistical analysis based on calendar or fiscal year in html or pdf. The EPO provides patent filing statistics back to 2001 in a downloadable spreadsheet. WIPO also provides access to filing statistics such as the number of filings, granted, in force and intensity. ?The WIPO data is particularly dense and in some cases goes back as far as 1883.

The fee-based systems include West Monitor Suite and Innography. Both products integrate patent data with company information. Company statistics are also available from IPO Today and the IP Today Corporate Parent Scorecard.

Patent litigation statistics can be found from a list of products including PACER, the Administrative Office of the Courts, LegalMetric, Docket Navigator, Winning Case, West Monitor Suite, Lex Machina, Innography and Paragraph Four. These tools help us answer questions about the judges, clients, litigants, etc. Although these tools are very helpful, they do have limitations. ?Data is rarely updated in real time and extensive analysis by the fee-based products can take time. Caveats include clerk errors, lag time, and the one nature of suit limitation.

International Trade Commission investigation statistics are available on the ITC website. ?Additionally, you may search use the advanced search feature to build your own statistics. Law firm statistics may be built by consulting a number of resources including IP Law Today, Managing IP Annual Top 50 List and IPLaw360. Law firm data available includes win/loss rates, number of trials, cases filed and patents awarded.

I have to admit I was not familiar with all of these products prior to the presentation and promptly explored a few of them.

Every once in a while, I receive financial questions from readers. I am not a financial adviser, so I usually suggest those needing significant assistance with their financial decisions to seek the advice of a professional. Today?s question comes from a frequent participant in Consumerism Commentary?s discussions, and focuses on a topic I don?t usually cover, life insurance.

Flexo, I recently read a book called Tax Free Retirement by Patrick Kelly and the author was selling the idea of buying Universal Life Insurance as a way to build your retirement fund. I?ve been doing research on Universal Life Insurance (pros and cons). What are your thoughts on Universal Life Insurance, and is it something you recommend people to do?

What is universal life insurance?

It?s worthwhile to describe life insurance in general, although I will address the specific question about retirement funds later in the article.

The primary parties when it comes to insurance are the insured, the beneficiaries, and the insurer. Life insurance policies offered by the insurer protect the income of the insured, so that if the insured passes away, the beneficiaries, who relied on that income in order to survive, can continue receiving income or a lump sum payment. For example, the head of a household or all income earners in a family may buy life insurance to protect their children. Life insurance benefits could help pay for funeral costs, medical bills, and the normal expenses of everyday life for the beneficiaries.

Life insurance comes in several flavors. The most common and basic is term life insurance. This is a typical insurance policy that is based on a set number of years. During that period, the insured will pay premiums and be protected, but at the end of the term, the protection ends. The nature of insurance means that someone could pay into a policy for several decades, and if that insured individual continues to live and stay healthy, she?ll never have any benefit other than peace of mind. At the end of a term, insurers offer an option to renew the policy.

In an effort to reduce the risk of non benefiting from years of paying into a policy, insurers came up with different types of policies, usually including a savings or investment component to help insurers mitigate the risk because in these scenarios, the chance of paying out benefits is closer to 100 percent. These are often called permanent life insurance policies, and there are several different plans designed to suit customers? needs. Universal life insurance is one form of permanent life insurance, like whole life insurance.

Universal life insurance

Universal life insurance provides some flexibility in the premium payments, the amount of money the insured pays to the insurer, usually on a monthly basis, to pay for the coverage as well as fund the savings component. The savings component is the cash value portion of the insurance policy; it?s basically a savings account. The insured can withdraw or borrow money from the cash value portion of an insurance policy. Because of this benefit, the premiums are much higher. Sometimes, the difference in premium is a factor of ten. Is the savings portion worth ten times more than an insurance policy on its own?

Because insurance companies usually offer low rates on the savings portion, and unlike money market funds there are no regulations that describe what the insurance company can do with your ?deposits,? insurance companies often invest the money at a higher interest rate, making money on the spread between their investment returns and the low interest rate they offer their insurance customers.

When you withdraw or borrow money from a universal life insurance policy, it reduces the amount of benefit your heirs or beneficiaries will receive. This reason alone is enough to steer people away from this type of coverage.

An interesting benefit of universal life insurance, beyond the similar whole life insurance, is that the insured can use the interest earned on the savings component to help pay the monthly premiums. Also, there is a type of universal life insurance called variable universal life insurance. With this variable plan, the savings portion earns a variable interest rate. With whole and some universal life insurance policies, the rate of interest you earn is locked in for the remainder of the policy.

Variable universal life insurance is one of the most flexible products you can buy to protect your income stream, but it comes at an even higher cost than the type f unversal life insurance described above.

Compared to universal life insurance, variable or not, you may be able to generate your own returns in savings or investment that are better than the returns you?d receive by including a savings portion in your policy. If you?re a savvy saver and investor, you may want to leave your investments separate from your life insurance policy and opt for term life insurance. If you appreciate consolidating your savings with your insurance policy and are not concerned with a significantly higher cost, it might make sense to opt for this type of coverage.

Can a universal life insurance policy build your retirement fund?

The savings component can make this a tempting option. There are three major drawbacks to this approach, and because of these reasons, I would not use a life insurance policy of any type to increase my planned income during retirement.

• Any retirement income you need and withdraw reduces the value of the benefits your heirs will receive, as mentioned above.
• You can get better investment options by opening an IRA at a discount brokerage.
• You?ll be paying much more for less potential performance than other retirement options. Even a 401(k) could cost much less.

About 90% of all headaches are classified as muscle contraction, more commonly known as ?tension headaches?. These are the headaches most of us blame on work, bills and arguments. Not everyone under stress gets headaches, but millions of people get them time and time again. For them headaches are a cronic problem.

Migraines have an even uglier reputation than tension headaches. Migraines are part of the vascular headache family and most often strike women. About 70% of migraine sufferes are female.Migraines can be crippling, so much so that migraine sufferers lose millions of workdays each year.

Usually migraines bring severe, throbbing pain to either one side, or both sides of the head. This is often accompanied by nausea, vomiting and dizziness. It can even cause blurred vision, and numbness in the limbs.

Trying To Prevent Them.

I myself have suffered for years with tension headaches, so now I try to head them off before they start. Here?s a few tips :-

Medication ? Take It Now.

As soon as I feel a tension headache coming on, I take a small dose of medication. It?s no use using just a pain killer, you need something that will relax your muscles as well. After all, it?s the tight muscles which are causing the pain in the first place, so it makes sense to relax them. If you know what kind of headache you have, your local pharmacy will be able to advise you on the right medication.

Exercise.

Exercise and has helped me a great deal. Exercise helps you to release stress, so regular exercise and stretching will be real of real benefit. If however you?ve got a severe headache, don?t exercise, relaxation is what you need.

Sleep.

Many people sleep a headache off, but too much sleep can actually cause a headache, so don?t overdo it. I little nap should be all you need to get rid of a headache.

Peace And Quiet.

Excessive noise is a common trigger for tension headaches, so try to find a quiet place where you can sit and relax. Practice some deep breathing exercises at least three or four times a day, you?ll feel better for it.

Protect Your Eyes.

Bright light can cause a headache. Whether it?s from the sun, television, or a computer screen, it lead to eye-strain which can then lead to a headache. So protect your eyes whenever possible, and cut down on screen watching if you can.

Watch Your Caffeine Intake.

If you?re a heavy coffee or tea drinker, then try to cut down, the general opinion is that caffeine can be a cause of headaches with certain people.

Don?t Chew Gum.

The repetitive chewing motion can tighten muscles in the head especially around the jaw and bring on a tension headache.

Cut Down The Salt

A high intake of salt can trigger migraines in some people.

LifeNet lets computers and phones talk to each other without an Internet connection, which could come in handy after disasters that knock out communication networks.

One of the first things to disappear in the wake of a major disaster is reliable communication. Without access to cell phone service or the Internet, it's difficult for first responders--or anyone who wants to help out--to speak with each other. And while satellite phones work in these situations, they're too expensive for many first responder organizations to purchase en masse. Now researchers from Georgia Tech College of Computing claim to have developed a cheap, easy solution:?LifeNet, a piece of software that allows people to communicate after disasters, even if landlines, cell phone networks, and the Internet are all down.

"It's just a piece of code that you can have on your laptop or phone. Once you have the software, the computers can communicate with each other, and you don't need infrastructure," says Santosh Vempala, the Georgia Tech computer science professor in charge of the project.

Any device that has LifeNet installed acts as both a host and router for the network--meaning the software can route data both to and from any other LifeNet-enabled device. You can read more technical details?here.

A group of people using the software can all communicate with each other (texting is the easiest way), but if even one person on the network has access to the Internet, everyone else can access it, too--though the connection probably wouldnt be strong enough to do any powerful surfing, like stream video. And if one user has a satellite phone, the whole network can use its services.

There's just one catch: Users have to be within range of each other. Outdoors, this could mean up to a kilometer. Indoors, users may have to be as close as a few hundred yards. But as Vempala notes, "you could have a line of people on this network that are spaced 100 yards apart, and the line could go as long as you want."

Hrushikesh Mehendale, one of Vempala's former graduate students, plans to bring LifeNet to market. The software will be free, he says, but users will have to pay for specific applications (i.e text messaging). Still, the cost will be cheap compared to satellite phones, which cost up to $600 a pop and charge 50 cents per text.

Vempala and Mehendale have already tested LifeNet with the FAA, which found that it was able to run all of its operations on top of the network. The researchers also recently partnered with the Tata Institute of Social Sciences in India, which will help deploy the service in communications-poor areas that have been hit hard by recent cyclones.

And the software isn't just useful in disaster situations. It could also be used in any region that lacks a reliable communications infrastructure. "The next thing is to get real users. We plan to find critical scenarios where we identify real need," says Mehendale.

Virginia executes man who raped, killed elderly woman (Reuters)

CHESAPEAKE, Va (Reuters) ? A man convicted of raping and killing an elderly Virginia woman was executed by lethal injection on Thursday, the first inmate put to death in that state this year, the attorney general's office said.

Jerry Terrell Jackson, 30, was executed at the Greensville Correctional Center, south of the state capital, Richmond.

"Tonight, the death sentence of Jerry Jackson was carried out by the Commonwealth of Virginia for the brutal rape and murder of Ruth Phillips," Virginia's Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli said in a statement.

Jackson, on death row since 2003, entered the Williamsburg apartment of 88-year-old Phillips on August 26, 2001. He told police he did not know Phillips was home.

But she was lying in bed at the time and confronted Jackson. She told him to take what he wanted and leave, but he held a pillow against her face until she stopped screaming, raping her at the same time.

Jackson was pronounced dead at 9:14 p.m., Corrections spokesman Larry Traylor said.

Jackson was the first inmate to be put to death in Virginia this year, and the first ever in that state to be executed with a drug mixture that included pentobarbital, a sedative.

Jackson was the 32nd person executed in the United States this year.

After killing Phillips, Jackson left the apartment through a back window with $60. He stole Phillips' car and used the money to purchase marijuana.

Phillips' body was found by her son after she did not attend church or answer her telephone.

A fingerprint on a piece of paper inside a wallet next to Phillips' bed and DNA from hair found on and around her body implicated Jackson, and a jury found him guilty of capital murder.

Jackson met with family members, his spiritual advisor and attorneys today, Traylor said, and the inmate requested a last meal but asked for details to remain private.

Jackson made no final statement, he added.

Traylor said there were no complications with the execution. Virginia, like other states, switched to using pentobarbital instead of sodium thiopental in its lethal injection regime after the sole U.S. supplier of sodium thiopental recently ceased production.

The Supreme Court earlier on Thursday denied an appeal to stay the execution.

WASHINGTON -- The Obama campaign's point person in New Mexico recently sent an email to supporters defending the president's position on the debt deal and bashing the "Firebagger Lefty blogosphere," including the Nobel Prize winning New York Times columnist Paul Krugman.

On the evening of Aug. 1, just after Congress passed legislation to raise the debt ceiling, Obama for America (OFA) New Mexico State Director Ray Sandoval sent an email to supporters with the subject line, "Please take 5 minutes to read this, Please."

"I know many of you have raised frustrations, but please, I implore you, please take 5 minutes and read the article below. It does a great job of explaining the Debt Ceiling deal," Sandoval wrote in bold text.

The rest of the email was a blog post taken from a blog called "The People's View," run by Spandan Chakrabarti. Chakrabarti writes that he has "been participating in online and offline liberal activism since 2003, when Gov. Howard Dean ran for president."

The blog post that Sandoval thought was important enough to share with others harshly condemns Krugman and progressive bloggers who have been critical of Obama. From the 1,825-word post:

Paul Krugman is a political rookie. At least he is when compared to President Obama. That's why he unleashed a screed as soon as word came about the debt ceiling compromise between President Obama and Congressional leaders - to, you know, avert an economic 9/11. Joining the ideologue spheres' pure, fanatic, indomitable hysteria, Krugman declares the deal a disaster - both political and economic - of course providing no evidence for the latter, which I find curious for this Nobel winning economist. He rides the coattails of the simplistic argument that spending cuts - any spending cuts - are bad for a fragile economy, ignoring wholeheartedly his own revious cheerleading for cutting, say, defense spending. But that was back in the day - all the way back in April of this year. [...]

No, the loudest screeching noise you hear coming from Krugman and the ideologue Left is, of course, Medicare. Oh, no, the President is agreeing to a Medicare trigger!!! Oh noes!!! Everybody freak out right now! But let's look at the deal again, shall we? [...]

Now let's get to the fun part: the triggers. The more than half-a-trillion in defense and security spending cut "trigger" for the Republicans will hardly earn a mention on the Firebagger Lefty blogosphere. Hell, it's a trigger supposedly for the Republicans, and of course, there's always It'sNotEnough-ism to cover it.

When contacted by The Huffington Post, Sandoval simply replied, "I have sent your request up to my folks. I will let you know when I hear from them."

Sandoval did not reply to a follow-up message about who his "folks" were.

"The bipartisan debt agreement put in place a balanced framework for the next phase to ensure that special interests and the wealthiest are asked to bear some of the burden of deficit reduction, rather than saddling middle class families and seniors with costs and taking extreme measures like ending Medicare as we know it," replied a Democratic official. "The views expressed in this email do not represent the views of the campaign."

The Obama administration has, at times, had a contentious relationship with both Krugman and the progressive blogosphere.

In 2007, Krugman was a vocal critic of Obama's proposed health care plan. The Obama campaign responded with an opposition-research style document accusing the columnist of flip-flopping.

In August 2010, then-White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs dismissed the president's progressive critics, referring to them as "the professional left."

"I hear these people saying he's like George Bush," said Gibbs. "Those people ought to be drug tested. I mean, it's crazy."

Obama himself has personally tried to reassure the blogosphere, at times even encouraging dissent. In a video message sent last year to attendees of the Netroots Nation conference -- an annual gathering of progressive bloggers and activists, Obama said, "What I?m asking you is to keep making your voices heard. To keep holding me accountable. To keep up the fight."
