Do I have to be religious to be spiritual? | who is the God of heaven ...

spiritual healingRecession may be true for much of the Western world, but there are some economic growth areas. One of these is the new spiritual self-help industry said to be a commercial filling of the gap left by the decline of Christianity. These days you can pay for any amount of books, courses, residential retreats, audio tapes, videos and conferences, all offering to guide you along a journey beyond yourself, by freeing your soul embracing who you really are, awakening to your life?s purpose, and finding the fulfilment of your dreams.

If Christianity in Britain these days is a dead duck, can this new industry replace it? Can spiritual self-help really help you find a sense of meaning and purpose not to mention personal well-being and development? Is it no longer necessary to believe in a supernatural reality or a transcendent divine being in order for you to find patience, tolerance, forgiveness, contentment, and a concern for others? Do you no longer have to be religious to be spiritual?

Reasons for decline of Western religion

In my view, Christianity, as a religious culture, is in its death throes because it hasn?t always been fostering the spiritual life. Too often it has had a limited understanding of the deeper meaning of the Bible and taking it as literally true regardless of scientific and historical research. Too often Christians have been seen to be hypocritically failing to abide by their own professed standards of charity and family values. Too often have those who believe in a God of love, clung to the notion of an eternal punishment of those who fail to do or believe the right things. Too often Christians have worshipped an immoral god who required the suffering and death of Christ.

We need something much better than this, but is the new spiritual self-help industry the answer?

Belonging

One of the characteristics of the new ethos is the principle that different valid spiritual paths exist. This is an emphasis on finding one?s own individual way to spirituality. If there is no longer one absolute truth then what is true for me may not be true for you and so what is right for me to do may not be right for you. My point is that adopting different spiritual practices, picking and mixing different beliefs, pursuing different life styles, and travelling to meet up with others for brief encounters, all adds up to ?bowling alone?, doing your own thing.

Yet having a sense of belonging to a family and community with shared values and beliefs helps a person to experience companionship and acceptance. You feel as if you are a part of something bigger and more important than yourself.

And so I would ask whether an individual self-help spirituality can provide that same vital sense of belonging?

Ethical challenge

The religious attitude is that only through learning to forget oneself can one find oneself ? only by focusing on the needs of others can you find a new you ? a more tolerant, generous and kindly you. Thus there is a strong ethical dimension to religion; a focus on duty and obligation, doing what is right, and resisting temptation to do what is wrong. Loving your neighbour as yourself and the ten commandments come to mind ? do not steal, murder, commit adultery etc. According to the Bible, Christ challenged us to take up our cross and follow him.

In urban anonymous life, it is only seldom that you are stimulated to pull together with other people, like helping the neighbours during local shortages or contributing time towards a well publicised social project.? However, spending regular time within a community means often being confronted by the needs of others.

One can ask whether the new non-religious angle on spiritual life ? with its individualised approach to personal improvement ? can fill the gap left religion when it comes to this test of social conscience without the context of religious community to provide a shared social consciousness of charitable action? Is meditation, spiritual counselling and personal reflection sufficient for spiritual growth without encouragement for altruistic action provided by social acceptance of the principles behind ethical conduct expressed in sacred writing?

My conclusion

The spiritual self-help industry has a lot to offer. But I feel something more is needed.? By itself inner psychological examination can just end in self-indulgent contemplation of your navel. In other words you can?t develop spiritually in isolation. Don?t you also? need shared social norms to support ethical learning? It is not easy to respond to the challenge of other people and their needs. When religion works well it is when for example a religious group regularly prays together genuinely seeking help to grapple with the real challenges of community.

I would suggest you also need a clearer sense of your destiny beyond the brief physical life of the body. When things gets really tough, don?t you need something in which to put your hope, a higher power that can deliver you from what is bad in your life and provide you with the transforming gift of new character?

Three centuries ago, Emanuel Swedenborg?s expressed his notion of a New Church using Christian language. But the essence of his insight is that he clearly foretold that the age of religious dogmatic culture would pass away and a new religious spirit would replace the old religion: not a new organisation but a new state of human society able to recognise what is genuinely deeply true. His idea was that this developing inner state of humanity would enable each of us to experience and understand our true relationship with the divine ?Christ within?.

Kerry in Afghanistan to prod Karzai on future ties

KABUL (AP) ? U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry embarked on talks Monday with Afghan President Hamid Karzai amid concerns Karzai may be jeopardizing progress in the war against extremism with his anti-American rhetoric. The session came shortly after the U.S. military ceded control of its last detention facility in Afghanistan, ending a longstanding irritant in relations.

During Kerry's 24-hour visit to the country ? his sixth since President Barack Obama became president but his first as Obama's secretary of State ? Kerry planned to meet with Karzai, civic leaders and others to discuss continued U.S. assistance to the country and how to wean it from such aid as the international military operation winds down, and upcoming national elections.

Karzai has infuriated U.S. officials by accusing Washington of colluding with Taliban insurgents to keep Afghanistan weak even as the Obama administration presses ahead with plans to hand off security responsibility to Afghan forces and end NATO's combat mission by the end of next year.

U.S. officials accompanying Kerry said he did not plan to lecture Karzai or dwell on the apparent animosity but would make clear once again that the U.S. did not take such allegations lightly, They said he would press Karzai on the need for May's elections to meet international standards and continue to stress the importance of Afghan reconciliation and U.S. support for a Taliban office in Qatar where talks could occur.

Karzai is expected to travel to Qatar within the week and some movement on the opening of an office is likely then.

Kerry, who arrived in Kabul from Amman, Jordan, had hoped also to travel to Pakistan on his trip to the region but put it off due to elections there. Instead, he met late Sunday in Amman with Pakistani army chief for Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, officials said.

The pair had a private dinner at the residence of the U.S. ambassador to Jordan as Pakistan continued to seethe in the aftermath of the return from exile to the country of former president Pervez Musharraf, himself a former army chief.

Earlier Monday, the U.S. military ceded control of the Parwan last detention facility near the U.S.-run Bagram military base north of Kabul, a year after the two sides initially agreed on the transfer. Karzai demanded control of Parwan as a matter of national sovereignty.

The top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, Gen. Joseph Dunford, handed over Parwan at a ceremony there after signing an agreement with Afghan Defense Minister Bismullah Khan Mohammadi. "This ceremony highlights an increasingly confident, capable and sovereign Afghanistan," Dunford said.

The dispute over the center threw a pall over the ongoing negotiations for a bilateral security agreement that would govern the presence of U.S. forces in Afghanistan after 2014.

An initial agreement to hand over Parwan was signed a year ago, but efforts to follow through on it constantly stumbled over American concerns that the Afghan government would release prisoners that it considered dangerous.

A key hurdle was a ruling by an Afghan judicial panel holding that administrative detention, the practice of holding someone without formal charges, violated the country's laws. The U.S. argued that international law allowed administrative detentions and also argued that it could not risk the passage of some high-value detainees to the notoriously corrupt Afghan court system.

An initial deadline for the full handover passed last September and another earlier this month.

The detention center houses about 3,000 prisoners and the majority are already under Afghan control. The United States had not handed over about 100, and some of those under American authority do not have the right to a trial because the U.S. considers them part of an ongoing conflict.

There are also about three dozen non-Afghan detainees, including Pakistanis and other nationals that will remain in American hands. The exact number and nationality of those detainees has never been made public.

A new agreement, or memorandum of understanding, was signed at the ceremony by Dunford and Khan, but the U.S. military said it will not be made public. The agreement supplants one signed last March, which had been made public.

The U.S. military said in a statement that the new agreement "affirms their mutual commitment to the lawful and humane treatment of detainees and their intention to protect the people of Afghanistan and coalition forces," an apparent reference to the release of detainees deemed to be dangerous.

There are about 100,000 coalition troops in Afghanistan, including about 66,000 from the United States. American officials have made no final decision on how many troops might remain in Afghanistan after 2014, although they have said as many as many as 12,000 U.S. and coalition forces could remain.

The U.S. started to hold detainees at Bagram Air Field in early 2002. For several years, prisoners were kept at a former Soviet aircraft machine plant converted into a lockup.

In 2009, the U.S. opened a new detention facility next door. The number of detainees incarcerated at that prison, renamed the Parwan Detention Facility, went from about 1,100 in September 2010 to more than 3,000.

After Monday's handover, it was renamed the Afghan National Detention Facility at Parwan and the U.S. military said it would provide the Afghan army with advisers and $39 million in funding.

The United States has spent about a quarter of a billion dollars to build the Bagram facility along with Kabul's main prison located in the capital.

(AP) ? Josh Duhamel doesn't mind the slime.

The "Transformers" star is hosting Nickelodeon's Kids' Choice Awards on Saturday and says the ceremony's traditional dumping of green goo on celebrities isn't as bad as it looks.

"I got slimed and I thought that it was going to be disgusting," said Duhamel on a break from rehearsing for the show earlier this week. "But it was actually almost soothing in a way. It's this warm goo that comes over you, and then it's a matter of just getting it all off. They have showers in the back."

Still, Duhamel hasn't been able to convince his pregnant wife, Black Eyed Peas singer Fergie, to take part in a sliming.

"I think, in fact, she put in a request not to be," he said, laughing.

Duhamel will be joined on stage at the University of Southern California's Galen Center by such famous attendees as Sandra Bullock, Steve Carell and Chris Pine, with Pitbull, Ke$ha and Christina Aguilera scheduled to perform.

Nickelodeon said a record-breaking 326 million votes have already been cast for the show, which honors kids' favorites in film, music, sports and TV.

Obama urges lawmakers' vote on assault weapons ban

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) ? President Barack Obama says each of his proposed steps to reduce gun violence should get a vote in Congress ? even an assault weapons ban that both parties agree stands little chance of passing.

Senate Democrats dropped the ban from the bill they plan to debate next month out of concern it could sink the whole package. Still, Obama says he's pushing for it.

In his weekly radio and Internet address released Saturday, Obama says the U.S. has changed in the three months since the December school shooting in Newtown, Conn., left 20 first graders and six educators dead. He says Americans support the ban, plus limits on high-capacity ammunition magazines, school security funding and a crackdown on gun trafficking.

"Today there is still genuine disagreement among well-meaning people about what steps we should take to reduce the epidemic of gun violence in this country. But you, the American people, have spoken," Obama said.

The White House said Saturday that Obama will make additional trips outside Washington to rally support for the measures, including the assault weapons ban. The White House also said that before Obama left for Israel earlier this week, his push for gun control was among the issues he raised with lawmakers from both parties as he embarked on a concerted effort to reach out to Congress.

In the Republican address, Sen. Mike Lee of Utah says the Senate Democrats' budget raises taxes by $1.5 trillion without doing anything to save entitlements like Social Security and Medicare. He says Republicans want a balanced budget that lives up to the nation's moral obligation to act in the best interest of future generations.

"Republicans recognize that keeping dollars, decisions, priorities and power in the hands of the people is what has made America the greatest civilization the world has ever known," Lee says. "Now is the time to return to that model."

Senate gun bill will expand background checks

Elvin Daniel, right, whose sister Zina was killed by her husband last October at a Brookfield spa, said the tragedy could have been avoided if the law required background checks for private transactions of guns during a news conference with law enforcement officials and some Democratic lawmakers, including Rep. Jon Richards, left, Thursday, March 21, in Madison, Wis. Democrats have a new proposal that would make it illegal to purchase or transfer guns without running background checks. (AP Photo/Kevin Wang)

(AP) ? Gun control legislation the Senate debates next month will include an expansion of federal background checks for firearms buyers, Majority Leader Harry Reid said Thursday in a victory for advocates of gun restrictions.

The announcement underscores that Democrats intend to take an aggressive approach in the effort to broaden the checks, currently required only for transactions involving federally licensed firearms dealers.

President Barack Obama and many supporters of curbing guns in and out of Congress consider an expansion of the system to private gun sales to be the most effective response lawmakers could take in the wake of December's elementary school massacre in Newtown, Conn. The system is designed to keep guns from criminals, people with serious mental problems and others considered potentially dangerous.

The overall gun measure the Senate debates will also include legislation boosting penalties for illegal gun trafficking and modestly expand a grant program for school security, said Reid, D-Nev.

Reid said that during Congress' upcoming two-week break, he hopes senators will strike a bipartisan compromise on broadening background checks. But without a deal, he indicated the gun bill would include a stricter version approved this month by the Senate Judiciary Committee expanding the system to virtually all private gun transactions with few exceptions.

"I want to be clear: In order to be effective, any bill that passes the Senate must include background checks," Reid said in a written statement.

Opponents including the National Rifle Association say background checks are easily sidestepped by criminals and threaten creation of a government file on gun owners ? which is illegal under federal law.

If not included in the overall gun bill, an expansion of background checks could have been offered as an amendment. But that would have likely meant it would have needed support from 60 of the 100 senators to prevail ? a difficult hurdle for Democrats.

Tree Obama Planted in Jerusalem May Be Uprooted for Inspection

It's an old gospel song: Just like a tree planted by the water, I shall not be moved. But if you're the magnolia tree the president of the United States planted today in Jerusalem, there's a chance you might be moved.

Obama planted a tree on Wednesday in Israeli President Shimon Peres's Jerusalem garden. It's a gift for a man Obama said has planted "the seeds of progress, the seeds of security, the seeds of peace - all the seeds that have helped not only Israel grow but also the relationship between our two nations grow."

The tree was meant to signify the strong roots of the relationship between the United States and Israel. But before these American roots can take hold, the Israeli government will inspect them.

An Israeli official tells ABC News that the magnolia tree will be tested and possibly removed in a week by the Israeli Agriculture Department. The roots of the tree were apparently kept in a plastic covering during the planting. As in the U.S., Israeli law forbids plants and trees from other countries from entering Israel. The White House and the Israeli government were aware of the limitations ahead of the visit.

A White House official confirms that the tree given to Peres was grown from a set of seeds from the original Jackson Magnolia alongside the Rose Garden on the South Lawn of the White House. It was planted in the 1830s by President Andrew Jackson. An official says it is the oldest known presidential tree on the grounds of the White House.

During remarks at Peres's official residence, Obama mentioned the story in the Talmud of Honi and the Carob Tree: A man sees an older man planting a carob tree and tells him that it will take 70 years before the tree grows fruit. Obama told the crowd the older man's reply: "When I came into the world, I found carob trees. As my forefathers planted for me, so will I plant for my children."

There's good news for Obama's magnolia tree: If removed for testing, it is expected to be replanted in the same spot. It's currently near a tree given by Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI during his May 2009 trip to the Holy Land. An Israeli official says Benedict's tree didn't undergo any testing because it was purchased in Israel.

97 percent of UK doctors have given placebos to patients at least once

Mar. 20, 2013 ? A survey of UK doctors found that 97% have prescribed placebo treatments to patients at least once in their career.

Researchers at the Universities of Oxford and Southampton in the UK discovered that 97% of doctors have used 'impure' placebo treatments, while 12% have used 'pure' placebos.

'Impure' placebos are treatments that are unproven, such as antibiotics for suspected viral infections, or more commonly non-essential physical examinations and blood tests performed to reassure patients. 'Pure' placebos are treatments such as sugar pills or saline injections which contain no active ingredients.

A random sample of doctors was surveyed online, and returned 783 responses. This sample was found to be representative of all UK doctors registered with the General Medical Council (GMC). The research was funded by the National Institute for Health Research, the University of Oxford Department of Primary Health Care Sciences and The Southampton Complementary Medical Research Trust. The results are published in the open-access journal PLOS ONE.

'This is not about doctors deceiving patients,' says Dr Jeremy Howick, co-lead author of the study from the University of Oxford, 'The study shows that placebo use is widespread in the UK, and doctors clearly believe that placebos can help patients.'

The survey showed that doctors prescribing both pure and impure placebos reported doing so for broadly similar reasons. Placebos were mainly given to either induce psychological treatment effects, because patients requested treatment or to reassure patients.

Ethical attitudes towards placebo usage varied among doctors, with 66% saying that pure placebos are ethically acceptable under certain circumstances and 33% saying they are never acceptable. Impure placebos were more widely accepted, with 84% of doctors deeming them acceptable.

This widespread use and acceptance of placebos is consistent with similar studies worldwide, yet they are still against General Medical Council ethical codes. 'Current ethical rulings on placebos ought to be revisited in light of the strong evidence suggesting that doctors broadly support their use,' says Dr Howick.

For both pure and impure placebos, over 90% of doctors objected to their use where it endangered patient/doctor trust and over 80% were against using them if it involved deception.

'This latest study with the University of Oxford demonstrates that doctors are generally using placebos in good faith to help patients,' says Professor George Lewith, co-lead author of the study from the University of Southampton, 'Other previous published studies by Southampton have clearly shown placebos can help many people and can be effective for a long time after administration. The placebo effect works by releasing our body's own natural painkillers into our nervous system. In my opinion the stigma attached to placebo use is irrational, and further investigation is needed to develop ethical, cost-effective placebos.'

Blood levels of fat cell hormone may predict severity of migraines

Tuesday, March 19, 2013

In a small, preliminary study of regular migraine sufferers, scientists have found that measuring a fat-derived protein called adiponectin (ADP) before and after migraine treatment can accurately reveal which headache victims felt pain relief.

A report on the study of people experiencing two to 12 migraine headaches per month, led by researchers at Johns Hopkins, is published in the March issue of the journal Headache.

"This study takes the first steps in identifying a potential biomarker for migraine that predicts treatment response and, we hope, can one day be used as a target for developing new and better migraine therapies," says study leader B. Lee Peterlin, D.O., an associate professor of neurology and director of headache research at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She cautioned that larger, confirmatory studies are needed for that to happen.

Experts estimate that roughly 36 million Americans, or 12 percent of the population, suffer from debilitating migraine headaches that last four hours or longer. Migraines are defined as headaches with at least two of four special characteristics: unilateral or one-side-of-the-head occurrence; moderately to severely painful; aggravated by routine activity and of a pounding or throbbing nature. Sufferers generally also feel nauseated or are sensitive to light and sound. Women are three times as likely to get migraines as men.

Such complicated diagnostic criteria mean that diagnosis is tricky, a fact driving efforts, Peterlin says, to find better diagnostic tools.

For the study, Peterlin and her colleagues collected blood from 20 women who visited three headache clinics between December 2009 and January 2012 during an acute migraine attack. Blood was taken before treatment with either sumatriptan/naproxen sodium (a drug routinely given to people with migraines) or a placebo. The investigators re-drew blood at 30, 60 and 120 minutes after the study drug was given. Eleven women received the drug and nine got the placebo.

The researchers measured blood levels of ADP, a protein hormone secreted from fat tissue and known to modulate several of the pain pathways implicated in migraine. The hormone is also implicated in sugar metabolism, insulin regulation, immunity and inflammation, as well as obesity, which is a risk factor for migraines.

Peterlin and her colleagues looked at total adiponectin levels and two subtypes or fragments of total ADP in circulation in the blood: low molecular weight (LMW)-adiponectin and high molecular weight (HMW)-adiponectin. LMW is comprised of small fragments of ADP and it is known to have anti-inflammatory properties, while HMW is made up of larger fragments of ADP and is known to have pro-inflammatory properties. Inflammatory pathways in blood vessels in the head are at work in migraine headache.

The researchers found that in all 20 participants when levels of LMW increased, the severity of pain decreased. When the ratio of HMW to LMW molecules increased, the pain severity increased.

"The blood tests could predict response to treatment," Peterlin says.

At onset of pain -- even before study drug was given ? the researchers could identify who would be a responder to treatment and who would not, as there was a greater ratio of HMW to LMW in those who would be responders as compared to those who were not.

After study treatment changes in adiponectin were also seen. Interestingly, in those patients who reported less pain after receiving study drug to treat the migraine ? whether they got the active migraine medication or a placebo ?researchers were able to see a decrease in total levels of ADP in the blood.

Peterlin says the findings indicate it may be possible to develop a treatment that would reduce levels of ADP or parts of adiponectin such as HMW or LMW adiponectin. She says should ADP prove to be a biomarker for migraine, it could help physicians identify who has migraine and know who is likely to respond to which type of medication. It also may help doctors make better medication choices and try alternate drugs sooner.

MyFitnessPal app to sync data with NetPulse and Matrix 7xi equipment

It's all well and good to maintain a food diary and an exercise log on your path to get fitter, but sometimes it's a pain to enter workout stats manually. MyFitnessPal has partnered up with Johnson Health Tech and Netpulse to solve at least one part of the equation. By working together, the free MyFitnessPal app syncs to any gym equipment that uses the NetPulseOne platform, leaving the daily diet as the only entry you have to make manually. In the next few months, the app will also be integrated with Johnson Health Tech's new Matrix 7xi series of cardio equipment for automatic syncing. MyFitnessPal has worked with other solutions like Fitbit and WiThings since it opened up its API last October, and while we can't assess its effectiveness just yet, at least you won't have to wear this dorky shirt while sweating it to the oldies.

Judge orders mediation in Fast and Furious lawsuit

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A federal judge has ordered mediation in a lawsuit over congressional efforts to get records related to Operation Fast and Furious, a bungled federal gun-tracking operation in Arizona.

Judge Amy Jackson Berman issued the order Monday, after the GOP-led House Oversight and Government Reform Committee and the Justice Department said they hadn't been able to reach a settlement. Senior Judge Barbara Rothstein will conduct the mediation.

In a joint status report Friday night, the committee argued against mediation, while the Justice Department endorsed it.

Attorney General Eric Holder has been found in contempt of the House for refusing to turn over records related to the program.

Fast and Furious was a flawed gun-tracking investigation focused on Phoenix-area gun shops by the Justice Department's Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Rand Paul Narrowly Defeats Marco Rubio in CPAC Straw Poll

Sen.?Rand Paul of Kentucky won a straw poll of Republicans at the Conservative Political Action Conference Saturday, narrowly defeating fellow Sen.?Marco Rubio?of Florida in a vote that reflected a looming battle?for the heart and soul of the party.

Paul received 25 percent of the vote to Rubio?s 23 percent of the 2,930 people polled. The two were far ahead of the rest of the pack, with third place going to former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania (8 percent), fourth to New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who was not invited to speak at the conference (7 percent), and fifth place to Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, the 2012 GOP vice presidential candidate (6 percent).

Paul?s victory comes on the heels of his 13-hour filibuster of CIA nominee John Brennan earlier this month, which raised his national profile and won him plaudits with many fellow Republicans and conservative activists. Young attendees at the conference flooded the halls sporting ?Stand with Rand? buttons and posters, the catchphrase of the social-media movement that cheered Paul on during his hours on the Senate floor.

The results show that Paul has wasted no time in capturing the support of the youth-driven movement that backed his father, former Rep. Ron Paul of Texas. The elder Paul won the straw poll in 2010 and 2011 before losing to former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney in 2012, who was by then the expected nominee of the party. Fifty-two percent of those who voted in the straw poll were between the ages of 18 and 25, the demographic that most identifies with the libertarian ideology of the Paul family.

But Paul's was a narrow victory, a 2-percentage-point margin (approximately 60 votes) over Rubio, who is often seen as the face of the next generation of the GOP. The two young, charismatic senators gave back-to-back speeches on Thursday, the first day of the conference, where they?highlighted the two visions for the party?that are likely to be locked in competition until the 2016 election.

Rubio?s message was that the longtime conservative worldview of opportunity conservatism, a robust presence abroad, and traditional social values needs a savvy messaging overhaul that will appeal to a wider swaths of Americans. Paul would prefer that the party refocus its work around fighting for civil liberties and reducing U.S. entanglements abroad.

In a reflection of the support for Paul?s foreign policy views, 50 percent of respondents said U.S. allies around the world should provide for their own defense, while only 24 percent said the United States should take a leading role in protecting its Asian and European allies.

Though the CPAC straw poll is hardly a scientific measure of the entire Republican Party, it does reflect the feelings of the most ardent activists. In the six years leading up to 2013, Romney won four times and Ron Paul twice -- the two politicians representing dueling ideologies during the 2012 primary election.

The second tier of results shows that the party has not united around a third person to perhaps take on these two in the coming years. Santorum, who has remained active in national politics since he tried to unseat Romney for the party?s nomination last spring, won 8 percent. Christie was not invited to speak because he criticized House Speaker?John Boehner, R-Ohio, during the congressional fight over a bill to aid victims of Hurricane Sandy. But his high-profile battles with unions have made him a popular figure with many in the party, and he still received 7 percent of the vote. Ryan, whose speech?focused?almost entirely on the budget he just authored for House Republicans, received 6 percent.

The poll was sponsored by The Washington Times and conducted by Fabrizio, McLaughlin & Associates. After Paul and Rubio, the results were: former Sen. Rick?Santorum, 8 percent; New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, 7 percent; Rep.?Paul Ryan, 6 percent; Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, 5 percent; neurosurgeon Ben Carson, 4 percent; Sen.?Ted Cruz of Texas, 4 percent; Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, 3 percent; former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, 3 percent. Other candidates received a combined 14 percent.

Ohio High School Football Players Found Guilty Of Rape

Posted on: 11:52 am, March 17, 2013, by Staff Writer, updated on: 11:47am, March 17, 2013

guilty verdict

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio (CNN) ? Two Steubenville high school football players accused of raping an allegedly drunk 16-year-old girl were found guilty by an Ohio judge on Sunday.

Judge Thomas Lipps announced his decision after reviewing evidence presented over four days of testimony in the case against 17-year-old Trent Mays and 16-year-old Ma?lik Richmond, who were tried as juveniles.

The victim was not in the courtroom when the ruling was read.

Mays and Richmond were tried before Lipps, a visiting judge, without a jury. The trial moved quickly ? and through the weekend ? to accommodate the judge?s schedule.

Mays was also found guilty of disseminating a nude photo of a minor.

?Human compassion is not taught by a teacher, a coach or a parent. It is a God-given gift instilled in all of us,? the victim?s mother said after court was adjourned. ?You displayed not only a lack of this compassion, but a lack of any moral code.?

The woman said her daughter will persevere and move on, adding that she has pity for Mays and Richmond.

Mays was sentenced to a minimum of two years in a juvenile correctional facility. Richmond was sentenced to a minimum of one year, but like Mays could be in detention until he is 21.

The Department of Youth services will rule whether the two boys will be detained longer, Lipps said, adding it will depend on their behavior and rehabilitation.

Mays and Richmond will be credited for the time they had served before the trial.

Richmond?s father told CNN that his son was doing OK.

?I told Ma?lik to put all his trust in God. God will see him through this,? Nate Richmond said. ?I told him that I love him, basically. And to be strong.?

The ruling brings an end to a trial that has gained national attention for its lurid text messages, cell phone pictures and videos, and social media posts surrounding the sexual abuse of the girl.

Mays and Richmond were accused of raping the girl during a series of end-of-summer parties in August 2012.

According to prosecutors, each of them penetrated the victim?s vagina with his fingers, an act that constitutes rape under Ohio law if it is not consensual.

Attorneys for the two boys had said they were not guilty.

CNN?s policy is not to identify alleged victims of sexual assault. CNN is not naming the minors who have testified but is identifying Mays and Richmond, whose names have been used by court officials, their attorneys and in multiple media accounts.

At the heart of the case was the question of whether the victim was too drunk on the night of August 11 and the early morning of August 12 to understand what was happening to her and to consent.

Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine said more charges in the case could be forthcoming. He intends to call a grand jury to hear more evidence.

?We cannot bring finality to this case without convening a grand jury,? he said. He said there were 16 people who had refused to talk to investigators.

He called the case a tragedy made even worse because the victim was revictimized through social media.

The victim testified Saturday that she remembered little about the night because she was drunk.

During closing statements on Saturday, attorneys for the two boys argued the state failed to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that their clients raped the girl, calling into question the victim?s credibility.

They also questioned whether an avalanche of cell pictures and videos and social media posts available in the days after the rape, as well as national media coverage ahead of the trial, tainted testimony.

But prosecutors told the judge there is no question the girl was ?substantially impaired.?

?The things that made her an imperfect witness ? that she doesn?t remember a lot ? made her in every sense of the word a perfect victim,? prosecutor Marianne Hemmeter said.

The girl testified Saturday that she remembered drinking at the first big party of the night and then holding Mays? hand as she left with him, Richmond and others.

The next thing she remembers, she told the court, is waking up in the morning naked on a couch in an unfamiliar house. She covered herself with a blanket while she looked for her clothes. She testified she could not find her underwear, earrings or cell phone.

She testified she was ?too embarrassed to ask what happened that night because I didn?t remember.?

The girl told the court she had a flashback memory of throwing up in a street somewhere sometime after she left the first party.

The victim was the 28th and final witness in a trial that has shone an unwelcome spotlight on Steubenville, a down-on-its-luck town along the Ohio River, and the Steubenville High School football team known locally as ?Big Red.?

Critics have accused community leaders of trying to paper over rampant misconduct by players of the highly regarded ?Big Red? football team and have suggested that other students took part in the assaults or failed to do enough to stop them.

The case has attracted the attention of bloggers and even the loosely organized hacking group Anonymous, who have questioned everything from the behavior of the football team to the integrity of the investigation.

But during closing arguments Saturday, Hemmeter cast aside the outside attention.

?This case isn?t about a YouTube video. This case isn?t about social media. This case isn?t about Big Red football,? she told the judge.

?This case is about a 16-year-old girl who was taken advantage of, toyed with and humiliated. And it?s time people who did this to her are held responsible.?

Earlier in the day, attorneys for Mays and Richmond challenged the credibility of the victim, calling two of the 16-year-old girl?s former best friends to testify.

One witness, a 17-year-old, testified the victim told her she believed she had been drugged the night of the assault, an allegation the witness said she did not believe because the girl ?lies about things.?

A hospital test on the victim for drugging came back negative, testimony revealed.

The teen witnesses, who described themselves as classmates and former best friends of the girl, told the court they saw the victim drinking. She drank at least four shots of vodka, two beers and some of a slushy mixed with vodka, a 16-year-old witness said.

The defense attempted to question the two teens about the victim?s past history, but the judge did not allow most of the line of questioning. Ohio, like most states, has a rape shield law that limits the amount of information of an alleged victim?s past that can be explored in court.

The 17-year-old witness said she picked the victim up the next morning from someone?s home and asked her what happened.

In the car, the victim said, ?We didn?t have sex, I swear. I don?t know what happened. I don?t remember,? the teen testified.

On Friday, three teens, all self-described friends of the co-defendants, testified that they saw Mays and Richmond engage in sexual contact with the girl. All three have been granted immunity from prosecution.

One of the witnesses ? identified as a 17-year-old Steubenville football player and wrestler ? testified that he used his cell phone to record Mays putting his fingers inside the girl?s vagina during a drive from one party to another. He said he deleted the video the next morning when he realized it was wrong.

The teen also testified that Mays later attempted to have the girl perform a sex act on him in the basement of a home.

?She didn?t really respond to it,? he said.

Depression in kids linked to cardiac risks in teens

Mar. 15, 2013 ? Teens who were depressed as children are far more likely than their peers to be obese, smoke cigarettes and lead sedentary lives, even if they no longer suffer from depression.

The research, by scientists at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and the University of Pittsburgh, suggests that depression, even in children, can increase the risk of heart problems later in life.

The researchers report their findings March 15 at the annual meeting of the American Psychosomatic Society in Miami, Fla.

"Part of the reason this is so worrisome is that a number of recent studies have shown that when adolescents have these cardiac risk factors, they're much more likely to develop heart disease as adults and even to have a shorter lifespan," says first author Robert M. Carney, PhD, a professor of psychiatry at Washington University. "Active smokers as adolescents are twice as likely to die by the age of 55 than nonsmokers, and we see similar risks with obesity, so finding this link between childhood depression and these risk factors suggests that we need to very closely monitor young people who have been depressed."

Researchers have known for years that adults with depression are likely to have heart attacks and other cardiac problems, but it hasn't been clear when risk factors for heart disease such as smoking, obesity and sedentary lifestyle join forces with depression to increase the risk for heart problems.

"We know that depression in adults is associated with heart disease and a higher risk of dying from a heart attack or having serious complications," Carney says. "What we didn't know is at what stage of life we would begin to see evidence of this association between depression and these cardiac risk factors."

The researchers studied children who had participated in a 2004 study of the genetics of depression. At the time, their average age was 9. The investigators surveyed 201 children with a history of clinical depression, along with 195 of their siblings who never had been depressed. They also gathered information from 161 unrelated age- and gender-matched children with no history of depression.

In 2011, when the study participants had reached the age of 16, the researchers surveyed them again, looking at rates of smoking, obesity and physical activity in all three groups of adolescents.

"Of the kids who were depressed at age 9, 22 percent were obese at age 16," Carney says. "Only 17 percent of their siblings were obese, and the obesity rate was 11 percent in the unrelated children who never had been depressed."

Carney and his colleagues found similar patterns when they looked at smoking and physical activity.

"A third of those who were depressed as children had become daily smokers, compared to 13 percent of their nondepressed siblings and only 2.5 percent of the control group," he says.

In terms of physical activity, the teens who had been depressed were the most sedentary. Their siblings were a bit more active, and members of the control group were the most active.

When the researchers took a closer look and used statistical methods to eliminate other factors that potentially could have influenced smoking or obesity rates in the depressed children, Carney's team found that the effects of depression grew even more pronounced.

"The siblings of depressed children were five times more likely to smoke than members of the study's control group, so depression wasn't the only risk factor for smoking," he explains. "But the depressed children in the study were another 2? times more likely to smoke than their nondepressed siblings."

And the heart disease risk factors were more common in formerly depressed children whether or not they still were clinically depressed at the time of the second survey. In fact, Carney says, for most of the adolescents, depression was in remission by the time the second survey was conducted in 2011, with only 15 percent of them reporting depression.

The results suggest that any history of depression in childhood appears to influence the presence of cardiac risk factors during adolescence, according to Carney.

"Depression seems to come first," he says. "It's playing an important, if not a causal, role. There may be some related genetic influences that give rise to both depression and to heart disease, or at least to these types of cardiac risk behaviors, but more study will be required before we can draw any firm conclusions about that."

Carney RM, Rottenberg J, Freedland KE, Kovacs M. Childhood major depressive disorder and cardiovascular risk factors in adolescents. Presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Psychosomatic Society, March 15, 2013.

Five convicted after hatching moviemaking tax fraud scam

LONDON (AP) ? The clue was in the title.

In some ways "A Landscape of Lies" was a typical indie film, with a tiny budget, a B-list cast and an award from an American film festival.

What made it special is that it was created solely to cover up a huge tax fraud.

Five people in Britain face jail sentences after being convicted this week of attempting to bilk the government of 2.8 million pounds ($4.2 million) in a moviemaking scam reminiscent of Academy Award-winning hit "Argo" ? without the heroic hostage rescue.

Prosecutors and tax authorities say the fraudsters claimed to be producing a made-in-Britain movie with unnamed A-list actors and a 19 million-pound budget supplied by a Jordanian firm.

In fact, officials say, the project was a sham, set up to claim almost 1.5 million pounds in goods and services tax for work that had not been done, as well as 1.3 million pounds under a government program that allows filmmakers to claim back up to 25 percent of their expenditure as tax relief.

Britain's tax agency, Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs, said that the filmmakers had submitted paperwork and already received 1.7 million pounds when checks revealed "that the work had not been done and most of the so-called suppliers and film studios had never heard of the gang."

The self-described movie producers were arrested on suspicion of tax fraud in April 2011 ? and decided their best shot at avoiding criminal charges was to hastily make a film.

Paul Knight, a true-crime writer turned low-budget filmmaker, was hired to write and direct "A Landscape of Lies," described in its Internet Movie Database entry as a crime thriller about a Gulf War veteran out for justice for a murdered comrade.

Just as in "Argo" ? in which the CIA dreams up a fake sci-fi movie, complete with screenplay, posters and advertisements as cover for a hostage-rescue mission ? the production was announced in film industry magazines. The casting of Andrea McLean, a host of talk show "Loose Women," as a troubled, bisexual therapist was reported in the tabloid Sun. The producers also recruited a former soap actor ? Marc Bannerman from the BBC's "EastEnders."

Neither the stars nor Knight were accused of knowing about the fraud.

"A Landscape of Lies" was released straight to DVD in Britain in 2011. But it did garner some fans, winning a commendation called a Silver Ace award at last year's Las Vegas Film Festival.

That wasn't enough to deter the tax authorities. Five producers from various parts of Britain ? Bashar Al-Issa, Aoife Madden, Tariq Hassan, Ian Sherwood and Osama Al Baghdady ? were convicted Tuesday of conspiracy to cheat the public revenue at London's Southwark Crown Court. They will be sentenced March 25.

Tax officials said the case marked the agency's first-ever prosecution for film-tax fraud.

"We are pleased that instead of this film flop going straight to DVD, these small-screen z-listers could go straight to jail," said John Pointing, the revenue agency's assistant director of criminal investigation.

Sun spits out 2 CMEs

Thursday, March 14, 2013

The sun recently erupted with two coronal mass ejections (CMEs). One began at 8:36 p.m. EDT on March 12, 2013 and is directed toward three NASA spacecraft, Spitzer, Kepler and Epoxi. There is, however, no particle radiation associated with this event, which is what would normally concern operators of interplanetary spacecraft since the particles can trip computer electronics on board. A second CME began at 6:54 a.m. EDT on March 13, 2013 and its flank may pass by Earth at a speed that does not typically have a significant impact at Earth.

Experimental NASA research models, based on observations from the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) and ESA/NASA's Solar and Heliospheric Observatory, indicate that both CMEs left the sun at around 400 miles per second, which is a fairly typical speed for CMEs.

Not to be confused with a solar flare, a CME is a solar phenomenon that can send solar particles into space and reach Earth one to three days later.

Earth-directed CMEs can cause a space weather phenomenon called a geomagnetic storm, which occurs when they connect with the outside of Earth's magnetic envelope, the magnetosphere, for an extended period of time. In the past, geomagnetic storms from CMEs of this speed are usually mild. CMEs such as this have caused auroras near the poles but are unlikely to disrupt electrical systems on Earth or interfere with GPS or satellite-based communications systems.
