Not really long distance, but distance in time

When you enter college, many of you are leaving behind your best friends, family and your relationships. Despite the heartache you know that comes with long distance relationships, you still want to try it out with your boyfriend/girlfriend.

Honestly, long-distance relationships suck. I should know. My boyfriend and I have maintained a long-distance relationship for three years. We attend different colleges in different states. I even studied abroad in London for a semester. I have seen many of my friends? long distance relationships struggle, fail, and succeed.

Long-distance relationships are hard, but it can be very rewarding for the relationship and for your self if you can endure the distance. Here are some tips that have worked for me:

Schedule Skype Dates

Skype is your best friend. If you and your partner don?t have it, download it now for free on their website. Skype is an easy way to have video chats via the Internet. This will be the best way to effectively speak with your loved one when you guys can?t see each other.

I usually plan to speak to my boyfriend 2-4 nights per week for about 30 minutes depending on our schedules. Make sure to discus with your partner ahead of time when you want to talk.

Don?t forget headphones. You don?t want your roommate to hear all the embarrassing pet names your ?boo? calls you.?

Text often

Texting is a great way to tell each other about the little things going on in your daily lives. Nothing like a cute text from your partner to brighten up your day. Be careful not to text ALL the time. It can turn your partner off and you can be missing out on opportunities to meet new friends at college.

Care packages

Care packages are the best. Surprise care packages are even better. Get a box and fill it with your partner?s favorite candies, homemade cookies, stuffed animals, CD?s, DVD?s, inside jokes, etc. Sending a care package tells your partner that you are thinking about them even though your miles away.

Plan visits

My boyfriend visited me while I was in studying in London.

It is really important that you and your partner plan to see each other eventually. Physically being together builds reassurance in the relationships. Plus, it?s just nice to hold hands.

It is also good to learn how to use public transportation and develop a sense of street smarts. And always tell somebody where you are going just in case.

Megabus and Boltbus are the best ways to travel between cities and college campuses for as cheap as $1! The earlier you get your tickets the cheaper the price. As seats fill up the price for tickets get more expensive. So plan ahead.

Give space

One of the great things about long-distance relationships is the space it allows you to grow as a young adult. Long-distance relationships take a lot of patience and maturity

With today?s technologies like Skype, cell phones, and Facebook, it has become easier more than ever to communicate with loved ones far away. Although you have the ability to communicate every second with your partner, just don?t do it. Give each other space to meet new friends and experience new things. College is a great time to realize your passions and career paths.

Don?t forget to be flexible. If he/she doesn?t answer your text within an hour, don?t expect that he/she is cheating. Trust your partner to be true. In most cases, they were probably were stuck in class or they forgot to charge their phone last night from staying up all night talking to you.

Remember the Time Traveler?s Wife could do it ?so can you!

Sen. Dick Durbin said today that his Democratic colleagues in the House and Senate should be willing to address entitlement programs like Medicare and Medicaid in deficit reduction negotiations.

"From my side of the table, bring entitlement reform into the conversation," Durbin said on "This Week with George Stephanopoulos." "Social Security - set aside ? doesn't add to the deficit. But when it comes to Medicare and Medicaid, protect the integrity of the program, but give it solvency for more and more years."

But Durbin ruled out raising the age of Medicare eligibility as a potential reform.

"We've got to make sure that there is seamless coverage of affordable health insurance for every American," Durbin said. "My concern about raising that Medicare retirement age is there will be gaps in coverage or coverage that's way too expensive for seniors to purchase."

Durbin added that Republicans should do more than open the door to eliminating deductions, which he said would not raise enough revenue to bring down the deficit.

"Let the [highest tax] rates go up to 39 [percent]. Let us also take a look at the deductions. Let's make sure that revenue is an integral part of deficit reduction," Durbin said.

Also speaking on "This Week," Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham said that putting revenue on the table by reducing deductions for high income Americans is "fair" only if Democrats will also agree to address entitlement reform.

He added that in order to reach a deal on the so-called fiscal cliff he would defy a no-tax increase pledge that he and many Republicans made to lobbyist Grover Norquist and his group Americans for Tax Reform, a promise he first made several months ago.

"The only pledges we should be making to each other is to avoid becoming Greece," Graham said today. "Capping deductions will help generate revenue. Raising tax rates will hurt job creation so I agree with Grover we shouldn't raise rates, but I think Grover is wrong when it comes to we can't cut deductions and buy down debt."

"I will violate the pledge, long story short, for the good of the country only if Democrats will do entitlement reform," he added.

If you've got kids, chances are you've been exposed to the Littlest Pet Shop at some point. Little animals (duh) waiting to be adopted and cared for. My kids love the toys. Now I have to fork over my Android tablet (it's good on phones, too) for yet another game. Such is life.

Littlest Pet Shop is very much in the same vein as My Little Pony (which makes sense, given the back-end talent they have in common). You're charged with taking care of the pets, which means acquiring planes for them to live and play, food to eat, earn rewards and complete quests.

There's a good 105MB of data that has to be downloaded before you do anything. Then the cuteness begins. At least until your kid tries to work a $20 in-app purchase. Consider yourselves warned.

ScienceDaily (Nov. 23, 2012) ? The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope has spotted the spiral galaxy ESO 499-G37, seen here against a backdrop of distant galaxies, scattered with nearby stars.

The galaxy is viewed from an angle, allowing Hubble to reveal its spiral nature clearly. The faint, loose spiral arms can be distinguished as bluish features swirling around the galaxy's nucleus. This blue tinge emanates from the hot, young stars located in the spiral arms. The arms of a spiral galaxy have large amounts of gas and dust, and are often areas where new stars are constantly forming.

The galaxy's most characteristic feature is a bright elongated nucleus. The bulging central core usually contains the highest density of stars in the galaxy, where typically a large group of comparatively cool old stars are packed in this compact, spheroidal region.

One feature common to many spiral galaxies is the presence of a bar running across the center of the galaxy. These bars are thought to act as a mechanism that channels gas from the spiral arms to the center, enhancing the star formation.

Recent studies suggest that ESO 499-G37's nucleus sits within a small bar up to a few hundreds of light-years along, about a tenth the size of a typical galactic bar. Astronomers think that such small bars could be important in the formation of galactic bulges since they might provide a mechanism for bringing material from the outer regions down to the inner ones. However, the connection between bars and bulge formation is still not clear since bars are not a universal feature in spiral galaxies.

The galaxy ESO 499-G37 lies in the southern border of the constellation of Hydra, which is shared with Antlia.

ESO 499-G37 was first observed in the late seventies within the ESO/Uppsala Survey of the ESO (B) atlas. This was a joint project undertaken by the European Southern Observatory (ESO) and the Uppsala Observatory, which used the ESO 1-metre Schmidt telescope at La Silla Observatory, Chile, to map a large portion of the southern sky looking for stars, galaxies, clusters, and planetary nebulae.

This picture was created from visible and infrared exposures taken with the Wide Field Channel of the Advanced Camera for Surveys. The field of view is approximately 3.4 arcminutes wide.

Smoking doubles risk of skin cancer

It is well known that cigarette smoking affects the health of individuals by increasing the risk of life-threatening diseases like cancer, lung and heart disease. There are many other harmful effects of cigarette smoking, including damage to the body's largest organ, the skin.

The addictive nature of smoking can make it difficult for individuals to quit, even though they are aware of links to diseases like cancer. Some individuals believe it would not happen to them. However, when some smokers can actually see the harmful effects of smoking on their skin, it can help encourage them to quit.

Premature ageing

Cigarette smoking has been shown scientifically to double the risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma, which is a type of skin cancer. Cigarette smoking is also a major cause of premature ageing. We all undergo natural ageing as we get older. However, in addition to this, some people age faster than others and develop premature ageing as a result of their lifestyle and the environment.

Sunlight is the most common cause of premature ageing; however cigarette smoking has been shown by some studies to result in even more premature ageing than sunlight.

The more one smokes, the greater the risk. In fact, one study showed that smoking more than 20 cigarettes a day can age the skin by almost 10 years! Women also seem to be at greater risk than men. Some of the manifestations of a 'smoker's face' include increased facial wrinkling, an ashy grey or reddish orange appearance (more so in fairer individuals), puffiness and gauntness. The skin can also develop coarseness, dryness, uneven skin complexion and dilated blood vessels.

Skin wrinkling

Even though the relationship between smoking and skin wrinkling was shown from 1856, the exact mechanisms by which smoking causes ageing are not fully understood. It is believed that smoking reduces the amount and quality of collagen and elastic fibres, which the skin needs to maintain firmness and elasticity. It causes a narrowing of blood vessels in the skin, reducing the blood supply to these vital fibres.

The smoke itself can also have a toxic effect on skin cells and the heat can directly burn the skin. In addition, smoking reduces the levels of vitamin A in the skin and leads to dryness of the skin.

Smoking also slows down the skin's ability to heal itself after skin injury and surgery. It can affect the healing of leg ulcers, and skin grafts. The risk of certain viral infections is also greater in smokers. For example, it increases the risk of Core warts and of cancers like cervical cancer and penile cancer developing from those warts. Smoking also increases the risk of getting skin conditions like psoriasis, diseases of blood vessels in the skin, skin lupus, hidradentis suppurativa, and oral diseases.

Smokers can consult their doctors and other health-care workers for more information about quitting smoking. Dermatologists can also help treat the skin conditions caused by smoking. However, as the saying goes, 'prevention is better than cure'.

Apparently feeling we were running low on Galaxy smartphones after the current lineup of Galaxy S III, Galaxy S III mini and Galaxy Note II, Samsung's SHV-E270L just made the FCC rounds and is rumored to be next in line. Flashing its codename "Baffin" in the documents, this device does not seem destined for an appearance beyond Korean borders, but a unique blend of specs and rumors that it will arrive as the "Galaxy Grand" continue to intrigue. Listed as an LTE phone in the Bluetooth database, and appearing in GLBenchmark reporting a 1.4GHz (possibly quad-core) CPU like the Galaxy S III, but with a much lower 800x480 WVGA display. According to a report from Korea's Money Today, the idea is to create a device for older customers that's easier to read with bigger icons and letters on its large 5-inch low res screen (as opposed to the 5-inch 1080p pixel density monsters we're now accustomed to), with a quad-core CPU pushing Android 4.1 and its Smart Stay features plus a 2,100mAh battery. We're not sure if it will increase your parent's scores in Fruit Ninja, but vision-challenged KT, LG U+ and SK Telecom customers may have an interesting decision to make very soon.

ScienceDaily (Nov. 22, 2012) ? University of Granada researchers have developed a revolutionary data storage device in collaboration with the CEA-LETI lab at Grenoble (France), an institution of the Campus of International Excellence CEI BioTic.

The researchers at the University of Granada Nanoelectronics Lab Noel Rodr?guez and Francisco G?miz have designed an Advanced Random Access Memory (A-RAM). The researchers developed the theoretical model of this new technology in 2009.

The results of experimental validation have been published in the journal IEEE Electron Device Letters and were recently presented in the International Silicon on Insulator Technology Conference in San Francisco, USA.

In the wake of the new devices and microprocessors developed by Intel (Ivy Bridge), UGR scientists are investigating alternative 3D A2RAM-based memories such as FinFET-ARAM and Trigate-ARAM patented in France and presented in the International Memory Workshop in May 2012 in Milan, Italy.

Overcoming Challenges

University of Granada researchers have demonstrated that the memory cell A-RAM and its variant A2RAM can solve the miniaturization challenges in DRAM cells -which is the type of memory that most digital devices such as computers, smartphones, tablets, etc. incorporate- long retention times, low battery consumption, and a large separation between the logic levels, which makes it immune to noise/interferences and to the variability of technological processes.

According to Francisco G?miz "since its invention in the 60's by Robert Dennard at IBM (USA), the commands and data necessary for the proper performance of a computer are stored as zeros (no charge) and ones (charge) in DRAM (Dynamic Random Access Memory) cell arrays." These cell arrays are composed of a transistor and a capacitor (? 1T-1C-DRAM). Each bit of information is stored as an electric charge in a cell consisting on a transistor and a capacitor that provides access to the charge and, consequently, to the data.

Since its development, the DRAM concept has remained unchanged. Currently, we can find DRAM cells smaller than 20nm (1 nanometer is one billionth of a meter) and DRAM memory chips of several gigabytes (one gigabyte is one billion of bites). However, the possibilities of making these cells smaller are becoming exhausted due to the minimum charge needed to clearly distinguish between the two estates of a bit (1 and 0). This is drawing the line to the minimum size of capacitors. "If we cannot further reduce the size of the capacitor, the solution is to replace it with1T-DRAM memory cells -or one-transistor memories- that store information directly in the transistor, which simultaneously detects the estate of the cells and gives access to the information stored."

The invention is protected with ten international patents including Japan, USA, Corea and the European Union. Companies such as Samsung and Hynix (Corea) and Micron (USA) have shown interest in this innovative data storage device.

RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) ? After bitter rival Hamas held its own in a fierce battle with Israel, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has no choice but to override U.S. objections and seek U.N. recognition of a state of Palestine next week, his aides said Friday.

But even such recognition, likely to be granted, may not be enough for the Western-backed backed proponent of non-violence and a peace deal with Israel to stay relevant and counter the soaring popularity of Gaza's Hamas militants.

Abbas ? formally the leader of all Palestinians but only in charge in parts of the West Bank ? was in trouble even before being relegated to the role of spectator as Israel and Hamas fought for eight days, starting Nov. 14, then negotiated a truce with the help of Egypt that could lead to easing Israel's long-standing Gaza border blockade.

By comparison, years of effort by Abbas to negotiate the terms of a Palestinian state with Israel have led nowhere.

His West Bank government has been buckling under the worst cash crisis in its 18-year existence, sparking widespread domestic discontent. And Hamas, which seized Gaza from Abbas in 2007, emerged from regional isolation after the Arab Spring uprisings brought its parent movement, the Muslim Brotherhood, to power in key countries, including Egypt.

The Gaza fighting sharpened trends already evident before, said analyst Nathan Thrall of the International Crisis Group think tank. "Abbas was truly isolated before this, and this (Gaza) conflict looks like a disaster for him," he said.

Abbas had hoped the U.N. bid will allow him to seize the initiative after years of diplomatic paralysis. Under the plan, the U.N. General Assembly would approve "Palestine" ? made up of the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem, areas Israel captured in 1967 ? as a non-member observer state.

Palestine is far from being established, but U.N. recognition would affirm its future borders and enable the Palestinians to join U.N. organizations. Israel, backed by the Obama administration, opposes the U.N. bid as an attempt to bypass negotiations.

Abbas says he's willing to resume talks once the 1967 borders have been recognized as the baseline, something hardline Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu refuses to do. Israel, while willing to cede some land, says it will not withdraw to the 1967 lines, and has instead moved half a million Israelis into settlements on war-won land.

Earlier this week, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton again urged Abbas in a meeting at his West Bank headquarters to drop the U.N. plan, said Abbas aide Saeb Erekat.

However, Abbas, widely known as Abu Mazen, told Clinton and other recent visitors, including the French and German foreign ministers, that he is determined to move ahead.

Israel's Gaza offensive "actually pushed Abu Mazen to go to the U.N.," Erekat said.

Erekat accused Netanyahu of systematically undermining the Palestinian Authority in order to keep his grip on the West Bank, while trying to push Gaza closer to Egypt. The West Bank and Gaza lie on opposite sides of Israel which has prevented virtually all travel and trade between the two territories.

"To stop this strategy, the only avenue is to go to the U.N., and place Palestine as a geographic entity, as a state," Erekat said.

Abbas is seeking the U.N. vote next Thursday and is expected to win the needed simple majority of those present, his aides say. The Palestinians can count on support from Arab, Muslim and many developing and non-aligned countries. They have been courting European Union member states, many of them skeptical, but it's not clear if they've made inroads there.

Hana Amireh, a PLO official in the West Bank, said he believes Abbas will get some sympathy votes after the Gaza fighting, with the international community increasingly aware of his precarious situation. "What happened in Gaza will convince more countries in the world to support us at the U.N.," he said.

However, others say Hamas' battle with Israel has diverted attention from what Abbas had hoped would restore some of his political legitimacy. "This bid is going to be politically and PR-wise less rewarding because of the Gaza war," said Ghassan Khatib, until recently the Palestinian Authority spokesman.

The fallout from the fighting is also troubling for Abbas in other ways.

Many Palestinians consider Hamas the victor because Israel chose not to send ground troops to Gaza, even after the Islamists fired hundreds of rockets at the Jewish state, including several toward Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, crossing what many had assumed was an Israeli red line.

Israel said it achieved its main objective, halting rocket fire from Gaza, but as part of Egypt's cease-fire deal also agreed to consider easing Gaza border restrictions.

The message being heard by many West Bankers is that Hamas' violent ways produce results and that Abbas' approach of non-violence and negotiations has failed.

Khatib, who returned to academia after his government job, said that at his Bir Zeit University in the West Bank, there are signs of growing radicalization among student activists of Abbas' Fatah movement.

Fatah gunmen had been involved in clashes with Israeli troops during the second Palestinian intifada, or uprising, a decade ago, but Abbas got them off the streets and into security jobs after becoming president in 2005.

The Facebook page of the Fatah youth movement, Shabibah, this week posted a picture of a Tel Aviv bus bombing that wounded several Israelis, with the caption "Fatah was here," though a Hamas activist was later arrested as a suspect.

Among younger Fatah activists, there are also growing misgivings over Abbas' security coordination with Israel in the West Bank, meant to keep a lid on Hamas.

Abbas has been one of the most outspoken opponents of violence, telling an Israeli TV audience this month that "there is no justification for rocket fire from Gaza or anywhere else."

But with Hamas celebrating victory in Gaza, the militants are now pushing back against Abbas' crackdown on them in the West Bank.

Hundreds of Hamas supporters took to the streets on Friday, defiantly raising their movement's green flags, a rare sight in recent years. In Ramallah, Abbas' seat of government, some 300 Hamas supporters marched in the streets, chanting, "Resistance has won."
