The aftermath of superstorm Sandy and the land of opportunity

Predictions abound: Will superstorm Sandy help or hurt President Obama look 'presidential'? The bigger question is what Washington can do to help the neediest Americans, when a hurricane blows through ? and when it doesn't.

By Jonathan Zimmerman / October 30, 2012

A rescue worker carries a boy through flood waters brought on by hurricane Sandy in Little Ferry, N.J., Oct. 30. New Jersey Republican Gov. Chris Christie said on the day after the superstorm that damage was 'unfathomable' and President Obama was 'outstanding' in handling the storm. Op-ed contributor Jonathan Zimmerman looks at the question: If Washington is so willing to help victims of natural disasters, why does it hesitate to assist victims of man-made ones, such as frozen economic mobility?

Adam Hunger

In 1972, as Congress debated legislation to assist the victims of Hurricane Agnes, then Rep. Ed Koch (D) of New York rose to ask his colleagues why they didn?t extend the same generosity to ?the ghettos of Harlem? and other poverty-stricken parts of America. ?Do we need the intervention of God before we address ourselves to the problems that man has created?? the future New York City mayor wondered. ?I would like to know why it is we distinguish between natural disasters and those made by man.?

It?s a good question, and we still don?t have an answer. Indeed, we?re not even asking it.

Consider the news coverage of hurricane Sandy and next week?s elections, which devolved into a duel of vapid prognostication. Would the hurricane-turned-superstorm help President Obama by allowing him to appear, well, ?presidential?? Or would the post-hurricane damage actually make him look worse, giving an eleventh-hour boost to Mitt Romney?

Meanwhile, a minor debate broke out in the blogosphere over what was seen as Mr. Romney?s pledge ? during a GOP primary debate ? to close the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). ?Every time you have an occasion to take something from the federal government and send it back to the states, that?s the right direction,? Romney said last June, in a quote highlighted by the Huffington Post.

Spokespersons for Romney quickly sought to quell the controversy, insisting that he had been misinterpreted. Yes, they said, Gov. Romney still thinks states should take the lead in addressing disasters. But no, he wouldn?t shutter FEMA.

And that raises the more interesting question: Why not? Even as Romney and the GOP condemn government spending, why does federal emergency relief remain a sacred cow for conservatives and liberals alike?

When Herbert Hoover made his famous trip to flood-ravaged Mississippi in 1927, as secretary of Commerce, he called on state governments and charities ? not Uncle Sam ? to provide emergency assistance. Even after he ascended to the White House, facing the worst economic crisis in US history, Hoover continued to reject federal relief to struggling localities and individuals. The stopgap measures he implemented late in his term were considered by many ? especially voters ? to be too little, too late.

After Franklin D. Roosevelt defeated Hoover, his New Deal unleashed massive federal spending for public works, farm aid, and much else. Not surprisingly, then, Roosevelt also presided over the first coordinated federal disaster relief. In 1935, he sent thousands of unemployed World War I veterans to Florida to help clean up after a hurricane; more than 200 of them died while doing so.

But direct assistance to affected individuals came much more slowly. In 1950, Congress passed a measure allowing presidents to authorize disaster-related spending on pubic facilities. Yet individuals couldn?t apply for federal aid until the 1969 Disaster Relief Act, passed in the wake of hurricane Camille, which offered temporary housing, unemployment compensation, and small business loans to victims of the tragedy.

Book Psychic ? Itinerantdaughter's Blog

Or: ?Why Is It That Every Idea I Have Is Already Taken??

A month ago or so, I read an article in the marvelous publication? The Jewish Review of Books?by philosophy professor Carlos Fraenkel about an ?underground? philosophy club he wound up teaching to the Hasidim of Brooklyn. ?A little taste (you can read the whole thing here):

??How could the medieval thinkers get away with interpreting the Torah according to Aristotle or the Sufis?? Jacob wonders.

?Well,? I say, ?they thought that if Judaism is true, it must agree with every true insight, even if it came from a Greek or a Muslim. The Haredim, on the other hand, think that they have to shelter true Judaism from any supposedly corrupting outside influence.?

This leads us to discuss whether the Haredi fight against cultural contamination is a lost cause from the start. I point to an interesting passage in Toledot Yaakov Yosef, the first published Hasidic book, by Rabbi Yaakov Yosef of Polnoye, a disciple of the founder of Hasidism, the Baal Shem Tov. R. Yaakov Yosef draws a contrast between a ?small? and a ?great? struggle; the former refers to a battle with weapons, the latter to the moral wrestling of the soul with the ?evil inclination? (yetzer ha-ra). The source of the metaphor is actually a famous hadith frequently cited by Sufi mystics. In this tradition, the Prophet Muhammad tells a group of soldiers that after returning from the ?smaller jihad? ? the jihad of the sword ? they now must take up the ?greater jihad? ? the jihad of the soul against pleasure. Of course, the Baal Shem Tov and his disciples didn?t study the Sufi masters. But they did study Bahya ibn Paquda?s Duties of the Heart, which was translated from Arabic to Hebrew in the 12th century and became a classic of Jewish thought. Bahya?s account of the soul?s ascent to God was strongly influenced by Sufism and includes a version of the hadith in question, without, of course, the reference to the Prophet Muhammad. As Isaac points out, excitedly, the Satmar Rebbe, Joel Teitelbaum, was also a devoted student of Bahya?s Duties of the Heart!?

I was so taken with the article that I quickly emailed the author, as I am wont to do these days (every day I?m hustlin?) the following:

Dear Dr. Fraenkel,

I read with great with pleasure your article ?Spinoza in Shtreimels? in the latest issue of The Jewish Review of Books, which is a fantastic publication I am always glad to get the chance to peruse. ?Part of my interest in your piece was my light philosophical education ?? I went to This University, which has strict Western Philosophy requirements, nearly all of which I?ve guiltily forgotten save the buzz phrase ?categorical imperative? ?? and part of it was because I am also a writer who has sort of inexplicably found herself covering a number of stories in the haredi community (upcoming pieces in Tablet and The New Yorker?s Culture Desk blog.)

The main reason that I?m writing is that in addition to being a freelance writer, I?m also working for a publishing company called xxx, which is located in New York City and run by the venerable PM. ?Something about your piece made me feel like there was may be a short book that could come out of it ?? perhaps it was the idea of an underground club akin to Azar Nafisi?s Reading Lolita in Tehran or some unavoidable titular association with Chabon?s The Yiddish Policemen?s Union (The Lubavitchers? Philosophy Club?) ?? and I?m writing to see if you thought there is an opportunity here to expand the piece into a book. ?Of course, you are the author of the article and also the man with the experience, so you?ll know best whether or not the material you amassed was exhausted in the article, but just perhaps it wasn?t. ?If in fact it was, or you are busy working on other projects, I still want you to know that the article was wonderful, entertaining, and pretty damn funny at times.

Let me know if you have any thoughts on this, or you just want me to continue to compliment your writing style and ability to get haredim to warm to you. ?I?m good for that, too.

Best,

ID

And his response:

Dear ID,

Thank you very much for your kind words about my essay (and my?apologies for the late reply; I just relocated for a month to Berlin?with my family and was without internet for over a week?a strange?state to be in?).

?

There will indeed be a somewhat longer version of the essay which?will, however, become part of a collection of essays titled Teaching?Plato in Palestine (the title really does recall Nafisi?s Reading?Lolita in Tehran; so your instinct was right). The book will be?published by Princeton University Press; I?m not sure if publishing it?with an academic press is a wise decision since the book aims to reach?an audience beyond academic specialists; on the other hand, I also?want the larger project animating these essays to be noticed in?academic circles, so I?ll probably stick with Princeton with this.

?

I do, of course, greatly admire PM?s work, and may well come?up with something in the future that might be a fit as my writing?moves further away from academia. So thanks for your inquiry!

All the best,

Carlos Fraenkel

?

My, that Fraenkel is a nice man! ?And finally, my somewhat cheeky reply to him:

?

Dear Carlos,

Woah? so? what you?re saying is basically I?m psychic re: book titles/themes? ?I think that is what you?re saying. ?I?ve got to add this new skill to my resume.

Anyway, your new move and the new book sound very exciting indeed! ?I?ll be keeping an eye out for its release (unless you want to save me some trouble and tell me know when it?s coming off press?) and for future pieces in JRB and other places. ?Please do keep me and X Publishing in mind for future work! ?We actually do a lot of stuff that has an academic bent but is aimed for a lay readership, so we may just be the perfect place for your next project.

Hope to speak again some day!

?

The moral of the story is: even if an idea you have has been ?taken,? it feels better than it being flat out rejected, so awkwardly email away!

Now enjoy live Cricket Streaming for Free

Oct 20, 2012

Cricket is a very popular game in the world and admired by many people especially in sub-continent and a lot of people are crazy about it. Some people consider cricket as their religion. They watch every game and they remember every statistics. Such people always like to talk about cricket. The popularity of Cricket can be easily understood by the fact that there is always international cricket happening in any part of the world.
Some obstacles faced by cricket lovers are that they cannot watch each and every match live in the stadium and many a times, every match is not in their country or city. Sometimes there are more than one matches are going on and local sports channel is only showing one of the two matches and you want to watch the other one. It also happens that no match is telecasted by local sports channel as the National team of that country is not playing.
Sometimes, your favorite match is going on and your mother wants to watch her favorite soap on television. In some cases, your brother wants to watch football and you want to watch cricket and you have only one television at your home.
Now you can watch live cricket for free. You can enjoy live cricket streaming for free from anywhere irrespective of your location. You just need a fast internet connection. You can watch your favorite sports live with HD quality without paying any single penny. You just have to tolerate some messy and ugly ads.
Free Cricket streaming can be very helpful and useful for under developing countries like India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan etc because of the load shading issue. So if there is load shading at your place but your tablet or laptop is charged or your generator/UPS have the capacity to load your laptop or PC or you have mobile or tablet with wifi feature than you can get benefit from this service.
Watching Live Cricket at home can be a great fan as you can call your friends at your home, buy your favorite Cold drink and some snacks and enjoy live cricket with the comfort Sofa, bed and A/C as you are watching at your home. You cannot enjoy live cricket in stadium with Air condition on and resting on Sofa unless you spend lots of money for special seats.
Some website also offer chat widget so you can chat with others watching same cricket match and discuss performances of players and results of the match and series. You can also cheer your team on such platforms
But one major problem faced by users of live streaming sites are lots of ads and many pop ups. There are two ways to solve this problem. First is to find an ad blocking software which is time consuming. The second one is comparatively easy. You have to search some live streaming sites in advance and filter those sites showing decent number of ads with no pop-ups and bookmark it for future. This one time effort can be very useful. If you start watching it on a low quality sites with lots of ads, your streaming keeps stopping and ads will be disturbing you like hell and that will be on crucial time of match.
So search out some best cricket streaming website from Google and watch live cricket for free.

Scientists Turn Air Into Petrol

You are so far off base that you must have done absolutely zero research here. I'm going to go down the list of why you're wrong point by point:

1. Population density is slightly lower in Brazil than in the US - Brazil has an approximate population of 194,429,773 while the US has a population of 312,488,000. Given the area measurements of each country, the population density of Brazil is 22/km (57/sq mi) and the US is 31/km (80/sq mi). This indicates that the population density of the US is approximately 40% greater than in Brazil which is a SIGNIFICANT difference. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brazil%E2%80%93United_States_relations]

2. Brazil has a national power grid that covers every part of the country that's physically possible - Please cite your reference for this information as I can find zero information supporting this. Regardless, the US has a very similar system in that failure of a single reactor does not typically create a permanent outage scenario. My next point also illustrates why your argument is flawed at its base.

3. The US grid is much, much worse than Brazil's - Brazil produces a total of 484,800 GWh while the United States produces over 4,325,900 GWh of power yearly (from 2010 numbers - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_electricity_production [wikipedia.org]). Over 80% of all electricity generated by Brazil is Hydroelectric which sounds great at first until you consider that regional droughts can and have caused serious power issues in the past (2001-2002 crisis - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electricity_sector_in_Brazil [wikipedia.org]). This makes Brazil's entire power grid so heavily reliant on a single resource that it cannot sustain the demand for power in the event that weather conditions are not hunky-dory. In other words, this is much less reliable and much more prone to system-wide failures or outages than the US grid. Granted, Brazil's energy production is more renewable and 'greener', however hydroelectric damming is known to cause widespread ecosystem problems by interrupting spawning paths for fish and other animals that rely on the uninterrupted flow of water along natural riverways.

Ultimately, I'm not saying Brazil's grid sucks, I'm just saying you're wrong and you have no idea what you're talking about.

Bomb kills Bahraini policeman on patrol

ABU DHABI (Reuters) - A policeman in Bahrain was killed and another critically injured in a bomb attack while on patrol south of the capital Manama, security officials said on Friday, as further unrest convulsed the Gulf Arab kingdom and close U.S. ally.

Bahrain, where the U.S. Fifth Fleet is based as a bulwark against Iran, has been volatile since majority Shi'ite Muslims began protesting against alleged discrimination last year.

Those protests were initially crushed by the kingdom's Sunni Muslim monarchy, with martial law and help from Gulf neighbors. However, smaller scale demonstrations have since resumed and anti-government protesters clash with security forces several times every week in the small island country.

The policemen were attacked in the village of Akr late on Thursday by rioters with petrol bombs and an unspecified "explosive device", the information authority said in a statement, citing Major General Tariq Hasan al-Hasan, the security chief.

One policeman died of his injuries on Friday morning while the other was in a critical condition, it said. An investigation was underway to find the assailants, Hasan said.

Earlier on Friday, Bahrain's interior ministry described the incident in the mostly Shi'ite village as a "terrorist attack".

Thousands of people attended the policeman's funeral in the mainly Sunni area of Rifaa on Friday afternoon, witnesses told Reuters.

Some mourners shouted "Down, down with Issa Qassim", in reference to Sheikh Issa Qassim, a spiritual guide to Shi'ites in Bahrain. Qassim is not connected to any party but led a pro-democracy protest of some 100,000 people in March.

Bahraini police have been the target of such bombings several times in the past year, most recently in May when four policemen were wounded.

Shi'ites complain of discrimination in the electoral system, jobs, housing and education and say they are mistreated by government departments, the police and the army. Government promises of action to address their concerns have come to nothing, they say.

An anti-government demonstration attended by thousands and organized by the main al Wefaq opposition bloc on Friday afternoon west of Manama passed off peacefully, witnesses said.

A commission of international legal experts reported in November that torture had been systematically used on protesters to punish them and extract hundreds of confessions. It recommended reviewing activists' jail sentences.

Bahraini authorities accuse regional Shi'ite power Iran of encouraging the unrest and have promised a tough response to violent protests as talks with the opposition have stalled.

'Paranormal Activity 4' movie review: Scary-movie franchise is ...

'Paranormal Activity 4' hopes to continue where the found-footage franchise left off. (Photo by Paramount Pictures)

OK, don't move. Don't move. Just sit there. Sit there and read this. Are you reading this? OK, keep reading. Don't move. Just sit there reading this, and reading this, and then when you...

Boo!

Pretty scary, huh? Well, OK, maybe not.

But lulling people into a false sense of security and then jumping out at them has made billions for horror-movie directors -- and a very nice chunk of change for the smart minds (and studio) behind the "Paranormal Activity" franchise.

They took that old idea and ran with it, inventing a bare-bones chiller about a couple living in a bland house where suddenly things go bump in the night. So the shutter-bug hubby sets up some security cameras, and while the couple sleeps, we watch. And jump.

By the fourth-go-round, though, the story (an angry demon, a possessed young woman) and the gimmick (people with camcorders who film everything, even when they're being chased by said possessed woman) are getting a little lifeless themselves.

Yes, there are still shocks. There will always be shocks when you've been lulled into a slightly dulled, unsuspecting state and all of a sudden ...

Boo!

See what I mean?

But there's nothing very new to the shocks. (Even the sound of them is the same.) And at this point the "mythology" (OK, who was behind this cult again, and why did they call up this demon?) is getting a little hard to keep track of.

It's nice that Katie Featherston is back as the demon lady; with her sweet, baby-round face, she's not the sort of person you expect to go around cracking necks. And young Kathryn Newton is lovely as the unsuspecting neighbor girl. (Hmm, did someone say "sacrificial virgin"?)

There's also, in its own weird way, a certain kind of avant-garde twist to this kind of moviemaking. Since the time of Griffith, directors have literally directed where we look with editing, camera movement and closeups. Watch her. Pay attention to this.

By relying heavily on static points of view, however, (this time, cleverly, incorporating webcams and Skype) the "Paranormal Activity" series seemingly removes that directorial authority.

Someone's still in charge, of course, but we're not conscious of it. We have to scan the frame ourselves, constantly, looking for clues, warnings, danger. And that both deeply involves us in what's happening, and refuses to provide the comforts of an obvious structure.

There's a truly experimental edge to that kind of filmmaking and one that might be worthy of some real study. Or certainly of more exploration by a better filmmaker, with a more ambitious aim of examining different ways of seeing. But instead, it's been taken over by a bunch of pranksters with no larger goal than jumping out regularly and shouting "Boo!"

Note: Newhouse News movie critic Stephen Whitty wrote this review.

___________

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 4
2 stars, out of 5

Snapshot: The latest in the jump-out-and-say-boo horror franchise, put together, as usual, out of "found" footage (in this case mostly pulled from webcams).

What works: The young cast of unknowns is fine, and the series gets points for not relying on gore.

What doesn't: The novelty of the gimmick wore off long ago.

Starring: Katie Featherston, Kathryn Newton. Directors: Henry Joost, Ariel Schulman. Rating: R, for language and some violence/terror. Running time: R for language and some violence/terror. Where: Find New Orleans showtimes.

Golf-Bogeys not bouquets for Miss Indonesia in Jakarta

Oct 18 (Reuters) - Indonesian beauty queen Inez Putri failed to convert her catwalk skills to the golf course on Thursday when she carded a 79 in the first round of the Enjoy Jakarta Ladies Indonesia Open.

It was a case of bogeys rather than bouquets for Putri, winner of this year's Miss Indonesia and a Top-15 finisher at the 2012 Miss World content, as the keen golfer's game has clearly suffered due to her commitments.

"I haven't played much golf in five months so I am happy with my score," she told reporters after the first round score at the Ladies Asian Golf Tour event.

Although her golf may be on ice this year, she still has her eye on a pair of gold medals at next year's southeast Asian Games in Myanmar.

The 23-year-old from the honeymoon island of Bali said she was planning to play in the individual and team event.

"I want to win gold at the SEA Games," said Putri, who has won gold and silver medals at Balinese national level.

"Winning a gold medal at (an) event like the Olympic Games, Asian Games or world championships is always what all athletes look for."

Having succeeded on the pageant front, Putri has her toe in the door at a golf channel with a view to promoting the game in Indonesia.

The Balinese Olympic Committee took a dim view of her swapping her golf spikes for stilettos, however, and kicked her off the island's team over potential scheduling conflicts.

"There's no pressure on me," said former Bali Governor Cup winner Putri, who wants to play on the American LPGA Tour in the future.

"I'd love it if the fans are following me as it takes off the pressure on me."

She said she could carry out her duties as Miss Indonesia and continue to play golf without breaking protocol.

"Those are social requirements. This is sports," she said. "I'm happy to play golf and promote Indonesia as golfing destination." (Reporting by Alastair Himmer in Tokyo; Editing by Patrick Johnston)

GoPro's new Hero3 cameras shoot super high-res 4K video

18 hrs.

The folks at GoPro have updated their popular line of rugged cameras. The new Hero3 models are smaller, lighter and capable of snagging super high-resolution 4K footage.

There are three models in the Hero3 line: The Black Edition, the Silver Edition and the White Edition. The models are priced at $399, $299?and $199, respectively.?The Black Edition can shoot 4K video while the White and Silver Edition stick to 1080p.

The awesomely high resolution of the Black Edition is pretty darn appealing, but there's a little catch: If you're shooting in 4K mode, the frame rate you'll get will drop to 15fps. (Lower resolutions can be shot at frame rates up to 120fps.) This is rather unappealing since you'll most likely want to shoot speedy action?? such as extreme sports or similar?? with a rugged little camera like that. Ah, well. At least YouTube added support for 4K videos some time ago, so you can share your low frame rate footage easily and show everyone how gorgeous it is.

The new Hero3 models can be preordered now. No word as to when they'll ship.

Want more tech news?or interesting?links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.
