Deleting media in FTM 2012 on Windows 7 - Family Tree Maker ...

It has been a long day so I may just be confusing myself. But I have been cleaning up my media (finally!) and have been deleting a thousand or more duplicate or otherwise unwanted photos. After selecting the photo and hitting Delete I get a confirmation message which also has the option to tick a box to send the deleted file to the recycle bin. With other software this option is kind of a failsafe, so you can get one last chance to change your mind and restore the file from the recycle bin. But is FTM's approach different?

Answer ID 2437 appeared to indicate the media file has been deleted from your tree, with or without the recycle bin option. The answer did not spell out, as another Help item I found later seems to, that the media file remains in the media folder unless you direct it to the recycle bin. I hate extra clicks but is that what I have to do to actually reduce the size of the FTM media folder?

Will the media I deleted without sending to the recycle bin be part of syncing the tree to Ancestry...I would hope not?

But does it impact performance of the FTM tree which is already very challenged when it comes to working with the media tab? And finally do these "deleted" media files get backed up when backing up the tree itself on the hard drive, or are only the linked media included in the backup?

Grateful for your input. Thanks in advance.

Alan Jones says Julia Gillard's dad 'died of shame' | thetelegraph ...

THE radio star was talking at a Liberal Party event and was unaware that his highly insensitive comments were being recorded

Alan Jones said Prime Minister Julia Gillard's father had died of "shame". "To think that he had a daughter who told lies every time she stood for parliament," Jones said. Source: The Daily Telegraph

VETERAN broadcaster and 2GB host Alan Jones has claimed Prime Minister Julia Gillard's father died of "shame" because of the political "lies" his daughter told.

He told a group of 100 Young Liberals that John Gillard's death was the fault of his proud child.

He went on to suggest Ms Gillard's tears of grief, for a man she publicly said she "will miss for the rest of my life", were what sparked a sudden leap in political polling for her.

Mr Gillard, a former psychiatric nurse, died in Adelaide on September 8, age 83.

The remarks occurred during Mr Jones' 50-minute speech at the annual $100-per-head Sydney University Liberal Club President's Dinner, on the top floor of Sydney's Waterfront restaurant in The Rocks last Saturday.

After referring to Ms Gillard's track record with telling the truth to voters over issues including the carbon tax, Mr Jones said her father's death was caused by the Prime Minister herself.

"The old man recently died a few weeks ago of shame," Mr Jones told a group of party members and MPs, including Alex Hawke, Ray Williams and Sussan Ley.

"To think that he had a daughter who told lies every time she stood for parliament.

"Every person in the caucus of the Labor Party knows that Julia Gillard is a liar."

Some members of the audience gasped with surprise.

The radio star went on to say Ms Gillard had enjoyed a recent spike in polls sparked by her tears. He also said she was being given an easy ride by the "brainwashed" Liberal Party who had backed down because she was a woman.

Organisers of the dinner were not aware a journalist from The Sunday Telegraph, who had purchased a ticket, was present.

While paying tribute to her father in parliament on September 19, Ms Gillard spoke of the rough and tumble of politics and how that affected the family.

She said her father "felt more deeply than me, in many ways, some of the personal attacks that we face in the business of politics, but I was always able to reassure him that he had raised a daughter with sufficient strength not to let that get her down".

Mr Jones made several mentions about why Liberal leader Tony Abbott should be Australia's next PM.

"His overweening weakness is his humility. You will never ever hear this bloke argue his ability, his virtue, or indeed his competence," he said.

"He is a man of incomparable integrity and conviction."

The broadcaster said it was vital every member of Mr Abbott's party united behind their leader in the lead-up to the election. Mr Jones said some members of the Labor caucus were scared of the Liberal leader and others thought he was sexist.

Yesterday Mr Jones did not respond to approaches from The Sunday Telegraph.

The event was staged by Sydney University Liberal Club president and aspiring MP Alex Dore. Mr Jones has endorsed his political endeavours.

Yesterday, Mr Dore said Mr Jones had not made the comments about Ms Gillard's father. Later, informed there was a recording of the speech, his position changed.

"It was a very long speech and I did not hear it. I have always found Alan to be respectful," Mr Dore said.

He said there was "no need" to "pick apart Alan's speech. All you are doing is reducing it to a very small thing which distracts from the issues facing Australia".

Mr Williams would not be drawn on Mr Jones' remarks.

"I will just let this one go through to the keeper, the room was a bit a noisy at the time, I can't remember him saying it," he said.

Fellow MPs Mr Hawke and Ms Ley could not be reached.

Mr Abbott had previously expressed his condolences for the Prime Minister.

"This is a tragic time for (Ms Gillard) and we all feel for her at this very sad time," he told parliament. "It is a remarkable parent who produces a prime minister of this country."

During the five-hour event, three spoof songs were sung by Young Liberals member Simon Berger, Woolworths' government realtions manager.

Applying These Tips Could Help You Repairing Your Credit. | Bob ...

Is your credit terrible? The helpful advice in this article will help you find a plan to transform your credit report into one you will be proud of.

Make sure to keep a record of your communication with credit bureaus in case they make mistakes. Keep a record of all your phone calls and correspondence. Have your dispute letter certified so you have proof of it both being mailed and being received.

Paying off each of your accounts and bills on time can help to repair your credit. Credit counseling services could help.

TIP! When you are trying to repair your credit, be realistic. Some credit reporting agencies may try to get you to commit to an unrealistic payment schedule, which will throw you further in the hole.

When you start fixing your credit, pay down balances on the credit cards as soon as you can. Pay off high-interest debt first, as it grows the fastest. Beginning to pay your credit card balances off will show creditors that you are making a valiant effort and are credit worthy.

Debt Consolidation

Consider debt consolidation as a possible tool to help you repay your debt and rebuild your credit record faster. Consolidating your debts may be the best way for you to reduce your debt and fix your credit. This way all of your debts will be combined into one bill and it will be easier to pay. When considering debt consolidation you will need to ensure that you can afford the payment amount.

Building your credit back up is the number one way to fix a bad credit score. Prepaid credit cards are great for this, since you can get improved with a bad credit score, and there?s no way to rack up debt and late fees. A potential lender will see this as a responsible move on your part, showing that you are credit worthy.

TIP! Opening additional lines of credit will negatively affect your credit score. Avoid obtaining checkout credit cards that offer huge discounts.

If you are having a difficult time creating or sticking to a budget, get in touch with a responsible credit counseling organization. Often times, these companies will work with the creditors to get negotiate a lower interest rate and an affordable payment plan that will help get your finances back on track. Credit counseling can be a key piece in helping you understand how to budget your salary and pay your bills.

Do not use your credit cards. Pay with cash whenever possible. Any credit card purchases should be paid in full the same month of purchase. Do not carry a balance on your cards.

Credit Score

Financing a home can be difficult if you have bad credit. If you do have poor credit, try to get a FHA loan because there is a guarantee that it will be given to you. Even when the resources for making down payments or paying closing costs are lacking, FHA loans can help.

TIP! Pay all outstanding debt to begin repairing your credit. Your credit will only get worse if you are not paying off your debts.

In order to fix your credit, you need to have a plan to pay debts off. Your credit score is damaged by large amounts of existing debt along with a history of late payments. Budget realistically, and set aside as much as possible to pay towards your outstanding debt. Having no current debt will help to raise your credit score.

Instead of avoiding collectors, talk to them to see what kind of payment arrangements they can offer you in light of your financial situation. Tell the debt collector the amount that you can pay them, and when they can expect the payment. Collection agencies are usually willing to negotiate.

Read your negative reports carefully when attempting to rebuild your credit. There may very likely be errors or mistakes that can be removed.

No credit repair company can remove factual information, no matter how damaging, from your credit report. You have to wait for seven years before negative data can come off your record. You should know that mistakes and anything incorrect can be removed from your credit report.

You should know of any inquiries about your credit score. Anytime someone looks at your credit score, that inquiry is noted.

If you have to improve your credit, make a solid plan and follow it. You must make a commitment to making changes on how you spend money. Sticking to necessities for a while is crucial. Ask yourself how necessary each purchase is, and how affordable it is too. If you can?t answer ?yes? to each of the questions above, you need to reconsider the purchase.

Credit Report

Go through your credit report with a fine tooth comb before resolving to accept the issues as valid. Credit reports sometimes contain inaccurate information. A credit dispute can be initiated in these cases; they take time to be resolved, but the discrepancy is rectified if found to be in error.

TIP! This is one of the quickest way to create and maintain a credible financial record. Late payments to credit cards are reported to the major credit agencies and can hurt your chances for securing a new loan.

As you?ve now learned, a credit report doesn?t have to be the stuff of nightmares. You don?t have to be afraid of your credit score; you can improve it. Just follow these tips we listed, and you will have the credit report that will be the envy of all of your friends

Apple's Tim Cook 'extremely sorry' for Maps flaws

It has been no secret: Apple's new maps app included with the iPhone 5 and iOS 6 launched last week with a lot of glitches, including misplaced points of interest and jumbled renderings of important locations.

Today Apple has addressed the issue head on with an apology letter from CEO Tim Cook. The letter, which appears on the Apple website, admits the direct problems with the service.

"At Apple, we strive to make world-class products that deliver the best experience possible to our customers," Cook wrote. "With the launch of our new Maps last week, we fell short on this commitment. We are extremely sorry for the frustration this has caused our customers and we are doing everything we can to make Maps better."

Cook also reiterated what Apple said last week -- that the Maps will get better over time as more people use the service.

He also alerted users to the fact that there are other options in the App Store, including Bing, MapQuest, and Google's Maps available through the browser.

Apple had used Google's Maps since the launch of the iPhone, but with iOS 6 and the iPhone 5, both released last week, it moved to its own solution which it has been building for quite some time. According to reports, Google and Apple still had another year to their agreement, but Apple wanted to create its own solution. Google has not released a standalone app for the iPhone or iPad, though The New York Times reports that it will be out before the end of the year.

Still, it remains clear that Apple is planning to invest big into mapping and fixing the problems.

"Everything we do at Apple is aimed at making our products the best in the world," Cook concluded. "We know that you expect that from us, and we will keep working non-stop until Maps lives up to the same incredibly high standard."

LAVISH Body and Home soap

Most people know Scranton, Pennsylvania, as the fictional setting of NBC?s ?The Office.? Turns out the ?Electric City? is also the real life-setting of one of the most charming little spas in the state: LAVISH Body and Home (600 Lindsen St.; 570/558-2273), founded by Matt Drace (a former Creative Director at Travel + Leisure) and Jon Chernes, one-time marketing guru for Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia. Given their impressive design resumes, it?s no surprise that their home goods section is well edited, but the spa itself is a huge draw. Clients love the organic facials?each one is tailored to your specific skin type and uses everything from cucumber to rice bran to draw out impurities?but personally, I love the soaps, made in Northern California of locally sourced herbs (my favorite: orange cinnamon with olive, which smells a bit like Florida at the holidays).

Romney, Obama stake out different approaches on immigration ...

ShareThis

WASHINGTON (CNS) -- The vastly different approaches of Democratic President Barack Obama and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney on immigration share a common denominator: Both men agree that Obama didn't accomplish what he intended to when he was elected in 2008, when he promised that comprehensive immigration reform was high on his agenda.

As Obama put it in a Sept. 20 forum on the Spanish-language network Univision, his priority after taking office had to be getting an economic slide under control, and that when he could turn to immigration, support he counted on in Congress had evaporated.

"I am the head of the executive branch," Obama said, "I'm not the head of the legislature." He said he was naive about expecting continued support from Republicans who previously backed comprehensive reform, making it impossible to get a super-majority of 60 votes needed in the Senate to move legislation.

Cardinal Roger M. Mahony, retired archbishop of Los Angeles, who has made immigration reform the focus of his work in retirement, described both Romney and Obama as "totally vague" in explaining how they will tackle immigration.

"Both candidates for president and their respective parties have waffled and drifted on what actual steps they would take if elected president," Cardinal Mahony told Catholic News Service. "It would be really helpful for all of us if during one of the upcoming debates the candidates would be challenged to state clearly three or four elements they believe are essential in future immigration legislation."

"The presidential candidates need to give leadership on this issue, and they need to explain more fully to the American people how they value our immigrant history, the presence of immigrants in our midst today, and how to bring millions of people out of the shadows of our society," the cardinal said.

Obama and Romney have pointedly wooed Latino voters at various events such as the conference of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials. Each has Spanish-language campaign materials and promises to fix what both say is a broken immigration system. But the details of how they would do that are a little harder to find, and they define the goals quite differently.

Both candidates' websites emphasize a range of issues on their Spanish-language pages: the economy, jobs, education and immigration. Romney's English-language pages include immigration among the topics covered. The section is short and not particularly specific. A search of the site provides links to pages of references to immigration in speeches.

Obama's site includes immigration as a key individual theme only on the Spanish section. It takes searching through the English page to come up with a lengthy list of links to various articles that define his immigration positions and actions.

In Romney's appearance on Univision, his talking points on immigration primarily criticized Obama for not doing more, without saying what he'd do differently. Romney promises "a national immigration strategy that bolsters the U.S. economy, ensures our security, keeps nuclear families together, addresses the problem of illegal immigration in a civil and resolute manner, and carries on America's tradition as a nation of legal immigrants."

Romney talks about making it easier for people with advanced degrees to immigrate and making "the system for bringing in temporary agricultural workers and other seasonal workers functional for both employers and immigrants." The Romney page says he will "take a strong stand against illegal immigration" and that he "believes that illegal immigration must end and has a proven track record of advancing that goal." There is no explanation of what that "track record" entails.

On the campaign trail, Romney has said he opposes the DREAM Act, which would give a path to legal status for undocumented young people who arrived in the U.S. as children. He also has praised Arizona's S.B. 1070 immigration law -- much of which was overturned by the Supreme Court in June -- describing it as a model for the nation, in part because it encourages "self-deportation" for undocumented immigrants.

Obama's campaign site emphasizes his support for the DREAM Act; his creation of a Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, known as DACA; stepped-up deportations of immigrants with criminal records; and efforts to get a bipartisan comprehensive immigration reform law.

Most supporters of comprehensive reform, including the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and other faith-based organizations, describe comprehensive reform as a law that allows families to reunite more easily; offers the estimated 11 million undocumented people in the country a path toward legal residency and citizenship; revamps the employment-based visa system; allows for control of the borders and whittles the years-long backlog for legal immigration among its key provisions.

The Obama administration also has aggressively challenged state laws that have attempted to put immigration enforcement in the hands of state and local law agencies and prevent undocumented immigrants from accessing services such as public utilities. Those challenges led to the June Supreme Court ruling that blocked most of S.B. 1070, and lower federal court rulings blocking major portions of similar laws in Alabama and Georgia.

The Univision program offered perhaps the best head-on comparison of the two candidates' approaches on immigration, which was one of the topics covered in the separate sessions that aired Sept. 19 and 20.

Romney in his interview sidestepped questions about whether he would continue DACA, launched by the Obama administration in August. It offers a temporary stay from deportation and provides successful applicants with a work permit. It includes a two-year renewable deferral of deportation and a work permit for undocumented people between ages 16 and 30 who arrived before age 16, have clean records and either completed or are attending school.

When announced in June, Obama described it as a temporary fix for the category of people who would benefit from the DREAM Act, a legislative approach to giving the same group permanent legal status. The bill enjoys popular support but has repeatedly stalled in Congress.

When pressed on what he'd do with DACA by Univision interviewers Maria Elena Salinas and Jorge Ramos, Romney didn't directly address the question, saying, "I'm not in favor of a deportation, mass deportation, a rounding up of 12 million people and taking them out of the country. I believe people make their own choices as to whether they want to go home and that's what I mean by self-deportation."

In his interview, Obama was pressed to explain why he'd broken a promise to pass a comprehensive immigration reform bill, he replied his priority had to be the economy, but also that he and his party couldn't address immigration without those Republicans who previously supported comprehensive reform but backed away.

"We have to have cooperation from all these sources in order to get something done. And so I am happy to take responsibility for the fact that we didn't get it done," he said, "but I did not make a promise that I would get everything done, 100 percent, when I was elected as president."

A Crash Course in Landing Page Conversion | Small Business ...

Posted on 27. Sep, 2012 by Guest Post in Blog, Landing Pages, Small Business Internet Marketing, Small Business Marketing, Social Media

Yesterday you learned what makes a good landing page and the 9 concepts below can be used as a checklist to keep you on track the next time you run a marketing campaign.

1. Where landing pages sit in the funnel

To understand the role of a landing page it helps to show visually how they fit into your marketing flow, from the traffic source, through your different test variants, and finally, the confirmation page.

(Click the image for to explore in more detail)

2. Message match: Ad to Headline

This should be your first concern. Read your ad phrasing and then read the headline on your landing page to see how closely they correlate. One of the biggest reasons for a high bounce rate (and a poor PPC quality score for PPC) is that people lose the information scent when they arrive at your page, thinking they are in the wrong place.

Next stop? The back button. Then your competition.

3. A single CTA

Having a single call to action gives people only one thing to do and stops them wandering down the wrong path. Drill this into your head: only give them one thing to do and they will be more likely to do it.

4. Social sharing

There are 2 ways to add social sharing to your page. You can add them to your main page to show social proof or add them to your confirmation page (covered in part 9).

Don?t forget that a low count shows ?negative social proof? so if you want to use them, try using paywithatweet.com to get your ebook instead of a form. This boosts tweet counts in the background. Then show the widgets when the count is high enough and switch back to a form.

5. Use video to increase conversions

Studies have shown that using videos improve conversions. But why?

  • Higher engagement: Videos increase the time on page, giving your brand message longer to sink in
  • Feature yourself or company employees: Raise the trust factor by showing you?re real
  • People are lazy: Many prefer to watch rather than read

6. Trust factors

Some things that can help instill a sense of trust in your visitors are:

  • Number of participants: My personal favorite is for webinars or events. If you show a running count of how many people are attending it can really sell people on the value of the event.
  • Testimonials: They can be video, but written ones also work well, especially when associated with a brand that your visitors know
  • Client logos/endorsements: If you have recognizable clients include their logo.
  • Media mentions: Show the logos of big sites where you?ve been featured. Often achieved via a PR push around a product launch.

7. Visual design

Professional page design is also important for establishing trust ? but bad designs convert too (usually for cheesy pages selling miracle weight loss pills). So what can you do to improve your conversions using design?

There are a variety of techniques including directional cues like arrows, or people looking at your CTA, contrast, whitespace and color etc.. Read Designing for Conversion ? 8 Visual Design Techniques to Focus Attention on Your Landing Pages for a detailed exploration of this.

8. A/B Testing & Optimization

Your page is awesome, right? How do you know? You just made an assumption because you spent a boatload of time designing it and you are feeling proud of your masterpiece. The thing is, EVERY page can be better, and this is where testing and optimization come in.

How do you optimize your pages? Most people just throw out some ideas (often untrained people) and try a quick test based on a headline or button color change? but most tests fail.

A good process goes something like this:

  1. Gather user feedback on your page using tools like Olark (live chat) and Qualaroo (simple surveys). You?ll be surprised to learn where people are hitting barriers in your conversion funnel.
  1. Brainstorm ideas with a diverse collection of team members: Include customer support, designers, copywriters and information architects.
  1. Develop a hypothesis: Now that you have feedback and some ideas for a test page you need to create a hypothesis for why you think it will succeed and build your page with this in mind. Try writing it like this:

?Our Test Hypothesis: Will allowing visitors to download our PDF by providing their email address perform better than receiving it in exchange for a tweet? Considering that not everyone has a Twitter account, or is willing to share such information with their followers.?

It?ll you build a test page with a strong sense of purpose.

  1. Run the test: Finally, you need to set up a test with your new page against the original (control) page. Make sure you leave it running for at least a week to cover daily variations in behaviour and don?t stop the test until it?s had enough traffic to achieve statistical significance.
  1. Choose a winner: This is easy. Whichever performs best should be promoted to be your new champion page and the loser discarded.
  1. Try, try again: Remember that test will often not give you the results you were hoping for, but don?t give up if your first few attempts don?t pan out. Learn from them and keep trying.

To see how good you are at spotting what converts the best, try ConversionSkills.com. The value in trying to pick the winner is to remember that your decisions should be driven by data, not assumptions.

9. Post-conversion strategies

We?re at the end of the funnel, and the most under utilized conversion opportunity space you have at your disposal. Your confirmation pages are prime real estate to engage with your new lead/customer, after all they have just signalled positive intent by converting.

Things you can add to your confirmation page:

  • Webinar follow up: Remind people that they will receive full videos and slides of the webinar even if they weren?t able to attend.
  • Social sharing: Ask people to share your page with their colleagues.
  • Follow you: on the social networks they hang out on the most
  • Freebies: If you were doing lead gen to give away an ebook or whitepaper, give them an extra one free as a thank you.
  • Ask them to subscribe to your newsletter: This is a great way to keep people in your sphere of influence for further re-marketing in the future.
  • The Amazon model: Use ?People who liked this also liked? ? to drive extra sales.

For an even deeper dive, read post-conversion strategies for lead gen landing pages.

Plane with 19 on board crashes in Nepalese capital

KATMANDU, Nepal (AP) ? A plane carrying trekkers into the Everest region crashed Friday morning in Nepal's capital, and all 19 people on board are believed dead, authorities said.

Thirteen people on board were foreigners, while three passengers and the three crew members were from Nepal, said Katmandu airport chief Narayan Bastakoti. He said all the 19 were believed to have been killed when the plane crashed.

The twin-engine prop plane belonging to the domestic Sita Air crashed onto open ground near the Manohara River on the southwest edge of Katmandu, just minutes after takeoff. Weather conditions were clear.

Firefighters brought the fire in the wreckage under control and police rescuers were trying to pull out the bodies, Bastakoti said.

The plane was heading for Lukla, the gateway to Mount Everest. Thousands of Westerners head to the region around the world's highest peak yearly for trekking trips. Autumn is considered the best time to trek the foothills of the Himalayan peaks.

The crash follows an avalanche on another Nepal peak Sunday that killed seven foreign climbers and a Nepali guide.

SF Housing Market Keeps Forward Momentum as Summer Closes ...

With a recent mid-September rally over at Wall Street, an improving local economy and a pent-up buyer demand for homes, REALTORS? in San Francisco are keeping busy and the housing market seems to be heading toward a state of normalcy, unseen for some years now. And, as inventory continues to drop throughout the city and the medium price for a single-family home continues to climb, we should expect to see inventory levels beginning to rise once more as sellers look to capitalize on opportunities to sell at higher price points.

Single-Family Home Sales

Since August of 2011, the inventory of single-family homes for sale in the city shrunk by 42.4 percent, to just 558 properties in total. The number of homes under contract also fell, but marginally, by 4.7 percent. By the end of last month, the total number of homes sold increased by 11.5 percent, to a total of 233 properties sold.

For homes that were priced below $700,000, the months of supply inventory dropped by 69.7 percent to a reading of 1 month. For higher-priced homes between $700,000 and $1.2 million, the months of supply inventory also fell, by 37.2 percent to 1.5 months.

One region of the city which continues to experience healthy sales activity is the area in the mid-western part of town, known as Twin Peaks West. Compared to August of last year, the number of homes under contract here has rose by 65 percent, while the total number of homes sold has also spiked by 50 percent, to 33 properties sold. Twin Peaks West has a total of 16 neighborhoods, with Mt. Davidson, the highest natural point in San Francisco, at its center. From the small town atmosphere of West Portal, to the well-kept homes of Balboa Terrace and the panoramic views of Diamond Heights, Twin Peaks West is a highly desirable location. And unlike the rest of the city, whose streets usually follow a grid type of style, the streets here follow the natural hilly contours of its topography. The median price for a home here is $1,170,000, which is up by 33.7 percent from 2011.

Despite a citywide shortage in inventory, another area of the city which has maintained positive real estate activity is in the geographic center of San Francisco, aptly named as the Central District. Since August 2011, the number of homes under contract here has increased by 39.1 percent, while the number of homes sold has jumped by 45.8 percent, to 35 properties sold. The Central District?s innate charm and countless points of interest, including Mission Dolores, the Haight-Ashbury, and the Castro, offers something unique and interesting for just about any home buyer new to the city. The median price for a home here is $1,380,000, which is down slightly by 7.8 percent from 2011.

Condominium Sales

Much like single-family homes, the inventory of condominiums for sale in the city fell by 38.6 percent, while the number of condominiums under contract increased by 24.4 percent. At the end of the month, the total number of condominiums sold increased by 35.1 percent, to a total of 304 units sold.

For condominiums that were priced between $500,000 and $900,000, the months of supply inventory tightened by 57.9 percent to a reading of 1.2 months. For luxury condominiums priced above $900,000, the months of supply inventory also fell by 65.6 percent to 1.7 months.

One region of town which saw an increase in condominium sales activity is Downtown San Francisco, in the northeast section of the city. Compared to August of last year, the number of condominiums sold here has rose by 47.9 percent, to 51 units sold. Despite being traditionally a commercial sector of the city, Downtown San Francisco does offer a number of luxury condominiums amidst the financial skyscrapers and famous landmark hotels. The median price for a condominium here is $625,000, which is up by 13.7 percent from 2011.

Another area which continues to experience vibrant condominium sales activity is in the central-eastern part of town, notably in the Rincon Hill and South Beach neighborhoods which border the waterfront. Since August 2011, the number of condominiums under contract here has rose by 26 percent, while the number of condominiums sold has jumped by 45.5 percent, from 66 units to 96 units in total. With the mayor in talks with the Golden Gate Warriors to build a new stadium along Piers 30 through 32, combined with the continuous influx of technology workers into the city, this area has moved beyond ?up-and-coming? and is a recognized and sought-after destination for young professional couples. The median price for a condominium here is around $722,500, which is up by 12.3 percent from 2011.

Outlook

The Los Angeles Times recently reported that, ?Nationwide home prices shot up 3.8% in July, making their largest year-over-year leap since 2006, according to real estate data provider CoreLogic. The gain marks the fifth straight rise in the gauge, part of a positive swing following a year and a half of slumps. The last time prices rose so much was in August 2006, when they jumped 4.1%.?

From Fannie Mae, ?Consumer sentiment regarding the housing market continues its modestly positive trend, according to results from August 2012 National Housing Survey. Supported by the expectation that home prices will rise in the next year and more saying it is a good time to sell, Americans have maintained a cautious but improving view of the housing market and homeownership. However, their stalling household financial expectations and declining economic optimism will likely mean the rate at which the housing market recovers will remain tempered.?

The consumer confidence index, which had improved in July, declined in August. The index now stands at 60.6, down from a reading of 65.4 in July. Lynn Franco, director of the Conference Board Consumer Research Center, says that, ?The Consumer Confidence Index is now at its lowest level since late last year (Nov. 2011, 55.2). A more pessimistic outlook was the primary reason for this month?s decline in confidence. Consumers were more apprehensive about business and employment prospects, but more optimistic about their financial prospects despite rising inflation expectations. Consumers? assessment of current conditions was virtually unchanged, suggesting no significant pickup or deterioration in the pace of growth.?

Earlier this month, the San Francisco Chronicle reported that, ?Drawn by the relative bargains after housing?s free fall of the past few years, many foreign citizens view U.S. residential real estate as a safe place to park their euros, pesos, rupees, loonies, pounds or yuan.? The article went further to explain that, ?In the nine-county Bay Area, about 6 percent of all property searches by prospective buyers come from abroad, according to Trulia.com, which gets 100 million page views on its site every month. San Francisco is by far the most popular search location for foreigners. Since it is a high-cost area with a thriving job market, it seems likely that many searchers are not looking for rental properties for investment purposes but instead are looking to move to the city.?

More Republican leaders get behind Akin in Missouri Senate race

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (Reuters) - More Republican leaders came to the side of Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin on Wednesday, a day after the deadline passed for him to withdraw from the race after controversial comments he made last month about rape.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee, which had cut off financial support to Akin, said on Wednesday it backs his campaign to defeat incumbent Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill in the November 6 election. Former Republican presidential contender Rick Santorum also endorsed Akin on Wednesday.

"There is no question that for Missourians who believe we need to stop the reckless Washington spending, rein-in the role of government in people's lives, and finally focus on growing jobs in this country that Todd Akin is a far more preferable candidate than liberal Senator Claire McCaskill," Rob Jesmer, NRSC executive director, said in a statement.

"As with every Republican Senate candidate, we hope Todd Akin wins in November and we will continue to monitor this race closely in the days ahead," Jesmer said.

He did not say whether the committee would change its mind about contributing to the Akin campaign.

Many leading Republicans nationally and in Missouri disavowed Akin after his remarks in a TV interview that women have a biological defense against "legitimate rape" that keeps them from getting pregnant. Akin apologized but was urged by prominent Republicans to drop out. The deadline for him to withdraw from the race passed on Tuesday.

The NRSC support came on the heels of word Tuesday from the Senate Conservatives Fund that it may put money into his campaign. The Missouri Republican Party also backed Akin on Tuesday after earlier saying he should consider quitting.

Santorum and U.S. Senator Jim DeMint of South Carolina, a Tea Party leader and major backer of the Senate Conservatives Fund, endorsed Akin on Wednesday.

"Todd Akin is a principled conservative who is committed to winning and fighting for freedom in the U.S. Senate," they said in a joint statement. "Todd will work to stop reckless spending, stop the out of control debt, repeal the government takeover of health care, support our military and defend life at every stage."

Meanwhile, the Missouri Democratic Party said it filed a complaint Wednesday with the Federal Election Commission alleging Akin illegally changed his position on congressional earmarks in order to get contributions from the Senate Conservatives Fund. DeMint and the fund oppose earmarks, which Akin has at times defended.

"In an attempt to salvage his campaign, Todd Akin has agreed to change his position on earmarks in an effort to secure the support of a SuperPAC - brazen and shocking behavior that is a clear violation of federal campaign laws and House ethics rules," Mike Sanders, Missouri Democratic Party chairman, said in a news release. "As an elected member of Congress, Todd Akin should hold himself to a higher standard of conduct."

Akin's spokesman, Ryan Hite, did not return a call for comment on Wednesday on the Democrats' allegations. But Akin's campaign website responded on Friday to criticism from McCaskill about his alleged flip-flopping on earmarks.

"For the record Todd's position on earmarks has been clear and consistent and is not in conflict with Senator DeMint's ban on earmarks," the website stated.

The Best SSD: Corsair Neutron GTX 256GB vs. Samsung 840 Pro 256GB [Battlemodo]

The pace of development in the SSD world is staggeringly awesome, as each generation of SSD controllers has delivered substantial increases in performance and reliability, while at the same time we've seen flash prices drop like a stone. It's a great time to be storing and accessing data, for sure, but we've also seen the market dominated by a trio of SSD controllers from SandForce, Marvell, and Indilinx, with different vendors applying their own tweaks to the drives' firmware to differentiate them. Though these controllers are all pretty sweet, we were beyond stoked to see two brand-new drives from Samsung and Corsair arrive this month, both with all-new SSD controllers. Will either of them put a dent in the SandForce/Marvell juggernaut? More »

Gov. Jerry Brown signs bill putting freeze on state park closures

SACRAMENTO ? Gov. Jerry Brown signed legislation Tuesday setting a two-year moratorium on closing state parks in the wake of a scandal in which some parks officials hid surplus funds while facilities were threatened with being shuttered.

The legislation by Assemblyman Bob Blumenfield (D-Woodland Hills) was in response to the discovery in July that some parks officials had concealed about $54 million in unspent funds even as the governor was proposing to close 70 parks because of a budget shortfall.

"Rogue bureaucrats lied to all of us," Blumenfield said Tuesday. "The governor acted swiftly and appropriately to remove them. Now, after signing this bill, we can move forward."

The bill provides $10 million to match private donations to keep specific parks open, an additional $10 million to other parks at risk of closure, and a like amount to address maintenance needs that threatened to close some parks.

In addition, the state Park and Recreation Commission will get more money under AB 1478 to oversee management of the Parks and Recreation Department to help ensure there are no more financial shenanigans.

The governor also signed a bill that requires the parks department to create a plan for increasing private revenue for state sites. It would allow Californians to apply a portion of their state tax refund to the parks in exchange for an annual park pass.

Assemblyman Jared Huffman (D-San Rafael) wrote the measure, AB 1589, which also requires more accurate and transparent accounting for park system finances. The changes provide "a serious 'reset' to an agency that desperately needs it," Huffman said.

Brown also signed another Huffman measure reshaping the state Department of Fish and Game to provide greater emphasis on conservation, including a change in its name to the Department of Fish and Wildlife.

The bill ? which some Republicans opposed as an attempt to de-emphasize hunting ? also provides for creating an environmental crimes task force to help prosecute crimes against wildlife, and authorizes the department to partner with nonprofit groups and accept funds for additional conservation programs. Brown signed AB 2402 "to improve the management of state fish and wildlife resources," according to a statement by his office.

In all, the governor signed 49 bills Tuesday, including legislation protecting tenants in properties that wind up in foreclosure or default.

One measure allows a tenant holding a lease to keep possession of the rental unit until the lease expires. Assemblywoman Nancy Skinner (D-Berkeley) wrote that bill, AB 2610. The governor also signed a bill requiring rental applicants to be given notice if a property owner is in default on the mortgage of a home before a lease is approved. Sen. Joe Simitian (D-Palo Alto) is the author of SB 1191.

Anti-austerity protests erupt on streets of Athens and Madrid

ATHENS/MADRID (Reuters) - Demonstrators have clashed with police on the streets of Athens and Madrid in an upsurge of popular anger at new austerity measures being imposed on two of the euro zone's most vulnerable economies.

In some of the most violent confrontations on Wednesday, Greek police fired tear gas at hooded rioters hurling petrol bombs as thousands joined the country's biggest protest in more than a year.

The unrest erupted after nearly 70,000 people marched to the Greek parliament chanting "EU, IMF Out!" on the day of a general strike against further cuts demanded by foreign lenders.

"We can't take it anymore - we are bleeding. We can't raise our children like this," said Dina Kokou, a 54-year-old teacher and mother of four who lives on 1,000 euros ($1,250) a month.

In Madrid, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy faced violence on the streets of the capital on Tuesday, and growing talk of secession in Catalonia as he moves cautiously closer to asking Europe for a bailout, aware that such an action has cost other European leaders their jobs.

In public, Rajoy has been resisting calls to move quickly to request assistance, but behind the scenes he is putting together the pieces to meet the stringent conditions that will accompany rescue funds.

Rajoy presents a tough 2013 budget on Thursday, aiming to send a message that Spain is doing its deficit-cutting homework despite a recession and 25 percent unemployment.

Spain appears on course to miss its public deficit target of 6.3 percent of gross domestic product this year, and the central bank said the economy continued to contract sharply in the third quarter.

Rajoy is facing intense pressure from euro zone policymakers to take tougher measures, particularly on freezing pensions.

On Friday, Moody's will publish its latest review of Spain's credit rating, possibly downgrading the country's debt to junk status.

On the same day, an independent audit of Spain's banks will reveal how much money Madrid will need from a 100 billion euro ($130 billion) aid package that Europe has already approved for the banks.

HEADING FOR A BAILOUT

Rajoy is gradually shedding his reluctance to seek a sovereign bailout for the euro zone's fourth biggest economy - a condition for European Central Bank intervention to cut his country's borrowing costs.

He suggested on Wednesday that he would make the move if debt financing costs remained too high for too long.

"I can assure you 100 percent that I would ask for this bailout," he told the Wall Street Journal.

He also said he had not made his mind up on whether to allow pensions to rise in step with inflation, which could cost the government an extra 6 billion euros this year.

"We need to be sufficiently flexible in order not to create any further problems," he said when asked about pensions.

His remarks, coupled with the central bank's warning on the economy helped drive up Spain's borrowing costs, with the yield on the benchmark 10-year bond jumping to 6 percent, a level seen as unsustainable in the medium term. The index of leading stocks fell 3.46 percent to a two-week low.

The Spanish government's drive to rein in regional overspending as part of its austerity measures has prompted a flare-up of independence fervor in Catalonia, the wealthy northeastern region that generates one-fifth of Spain's economic output.

Catalonia needs a 5 billion-euro bailout from Madrid to meet debt payments this year, but Catalans believe they bear an unfairly large share of the country's tax burden.

Artur Mas, the conservative president of Catalonia, announced on Tuesday he would hold early elections in November after Rajoy rebuffed his call for more tax autonomy.

On Wednesday Mas took things further, saying Catalonia should also hold a referendum on independence, which the central government says would be unconstitutional.

SAMARAS FACES TEST

With Rajoy under new pressure from the Catalans, his fellow euro zone struggler, Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, also faced a major test, in the shape of a 24-hour strike called by the country's two biggest unions.

Ships stayed in port, museums and monuments were shut and air traffic controllers walked off the job. Trains and flights were suspended, public offices and shops were shut, and hospitals provided a reduced service.

Union anger is directed at spending cuts worth nearly 12 billion euros ($16 billion) over the next two years that Greece has promised the European Union and International Monetary Fund in an effort to secure its next tranche of aid.

The bulk of those cuts is expected to come from cutting wages, pensions and welfare benefits, heaping a new wave of misery on Greeks who say repeated rounds of austerity have pushed them to the brink and failed to transform the country for the better.

"My husband has lost his job, we just can't make ends meet," said Dimitra Kontouli, 49, a local government employee whose salary has been cut to 1,100 euros a month from 1,600 euros.

Unions argue that Greece should remain in the euro but default on part of its debt and ditch the current recipe of austerity cuts in favor of higher taxes on the rich and efforts to nab wealthy tax evaders.

But with Greece facing certain bankruptcy and a potential euro zone exit without further aid, Samaras's government has little choice but to push through the measures.

94 MILLION Personal Files Exposed: Sobering Statistics Regarding ...

Sep 25 2012 ? 1:59PM GMT

Posted by: DavidScott
1 year plan

According to security firm Rapid 7, approximately 94 million personal files of Americans have been exposed by government agencies since 2009 ? those that we know about, that is.

There are likely even more, given the fact that many states do not require agencies to report breaches.

As to the Feds:? According to a recent Government Accounting Office (GAO) report, 18 of 24 surveyed Federal agencies had poor security controls, deemed not of sufficient standards for securing our?personal information.

Private business has nothing to brag about either.? Breaches were up 58% in 2011 over 2010, and 2012 will beat last year.

None of this surprises me:? From a recent visit, I know for certain that a certain high-profile Fortune 100 firm simply does not enforce their policy requiring all users to log out of computer systems at end-of-day, or during extended absences from their desks/work areas.? It?s rather extraordinary:? People who are gone for the day remain logged in throughout the office, with a variety of proprietary, confidential, client, and personal information displayed.? So much for systems that employ individual and group securities, and associated access/enablements. ?(Lest anyone wonder why automatic logouts are not employed, I wonder too).?

IdentityForce ? estimates that 86% of data breaches are not IT-related (that is, due to faults within IT systems, processes, or protections), but rather are due to remises of policy and training.?

It has always been my view that matters of human error, and simple lack of care, are the better part of so-called ?breaches? ? and in those instances are better described as data exposures. ?Regardless, organizations seem to be at increasing risk, rather than decreasing, for allowing sensitive data to reach the wrong parties.?

Is your organization at risk?? It?s time for a survey ? even if you feel you?re fairly tight.? Survey your environment, and you can pretty much figure that your Acceptable Use, Security, and Disaster Recovery plans, policies and postures are due for modernization and updating.?

Then train your personnel for appropriate behaviors and?contingencies? ?essentially, today, everyone should be a virtual security officer?

Keep this important BTW tenet in mind:? In the realm of risk, unmanaged possibilities become probabilities.???

Pakistan disowns bounty on anti-Islam filmmaker - The Seattle Times

Originally published September 24, 2012 at 4:49 AM | Page modified September 24, 2012 at 4:29 PM

ISLAMABAD ?

The Pakistani government on Monday distanced itself from an offer by one of its Cabinet ministers to pay $100,000 to anyone who kills the maker of an anti-Islam film that has sparked violent protests across the Muslim world.

The film, "Innocence of Muslims," has enraged many Muslims for its portrayal of the Prophet Muhammad as a fraud, a womanizer and a child molester. At least 51 people, including the U.S. ambassador to Libya, have been killed in violence linked to protests over the film, which also has renewed debate over freedom of expression in the U.S. and in Europe.

Adding to the anger in the Muslim world was a decision by a French satirical magazine to publish lewd pictures of the prophet last week, prompting French authorities to order the temporary closure of around 20 overseas missions out of fear they'd be targeted by demonstrators.

Some of the most intense and sustained protests have come in Pakistan, where the role of Islam in society is sacrosanct and anti-American sentiment runs high. But even in that atmosphere, the bounty offered by Railways Minister Ghulam Ahmad Bilour has drawn criticism.

Bilour said Saturday that he would pay $100,000 out of his own pocket to anyone who kills the man behind the inflammatory film, Nakoula Basseley Nakoula. The filmmaker was forced into hiding after the 14-minute movie trailer rose to prominence.

Bilour also appealed to al-Qaida and Taliban militants to help eliminate the filmmaker.

Pakistan's Foreign Office said in a statement Monday that the bounty on the filmmaker's head reflected Bilour's personal view and was not official government policy.

The minister belongs to the secular Awami National Party, an ally in the government of President Asif Ali Zardari. His comments struck a nerve within his own party, which is considered anti-Taliban and has lost several leaders in the fight against the insurgency.

A party spokesman, Haji Adeel, said the statement was Bilour's personal view, and that the party had sought an explanation from him.

"We are a secular party," he said. "We consider al-Qaida and Taliban as our enemy."

Pakistan's government declared last Friday a national holiday - "Day of Love for the Prophet" - and called on people to take to the streets to protest the film peacefully. But the demonstrations turned violent, and at least 21 people were killed.

In Iran, the culture minister said his country will boycott the 2013 Oscars and not field a candidate for the foreign film category in protest against the video.

Mohammed Hosseini said Tehran would not submit an entry for next year's awards due to the "intolerable insult to the Prophet of Islam," the semiofficial ISNA news agency reported.

The committee has already picked "Ye Habbeh Ghand," or "A Cube of Sugar" - a film about a family wedding turning into a funeral when the groom's relative dies - as Iran's entry as best foreign film. But the government must endorse the selection for it to become official.

Iranian director Asghar Farhadi in February won the Oscar for best foreign film for his movie, "A Separation" - the first such prize for Iran.

Nearly two weeks after demonstrations began with protesters scaling the walls of the U.S. Embassy in Egypt, the film continued to draw people out into the streets in protest.

In Sri Lanka, about 5,000 protesters marched through the nation's capital demanding the U.S. ban the film and punish its creators. The demonstrators blocked traffic as they marched on a main road in Colombo, carrying signs and banners that read "Punishment for those involved" and "Our hearts are wounded and chests full of anger."

Protest organizer Kamil Hussain urged the U.S. to ban "Innocence of Muslims" and remove it from YouTube, saying "insulting a religious leader is not freedom of speech."

A small protest also took place in northern Nigeria, where hundreds of Muslims marched peacefully through the streets of the city of Kaduna. Demonstrators scrawled graffiti on walls reading: "Death to the Americans, Death to the Israelites."

Demonstrations in Nigeria, a nation largely split between a Christian south and a Muslim north, have been peaceful, though one protest was broken up by soldiers firing into the air.

In Lebanon, a military prosecutor indicted 45 people related to attacks on policemen and a KFC restaurant during protests against the film, judicial authorities said.

On Sept. 14, security forces opened fire in the northern city of Tripoli, killing one person and wounding 25 after a crowd attacked the KFC and a Hardee's restaurant.

Prosecutor Saqr Saqr charged the 45 on accusations including attacking policemen, damaging security vehicles and burning a restaurant, the officials said. They spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations. Since one person was killed in the incident, some of the accused could get life in prison, if convicted.

In Sweden, an appeals court acquitted three men accused of plotting to murder a Swedish artist who had depicted the Prophet Muhammad as a dog. Upholding a lower court's ruling, the appeals court in Goteborg said Monday there was no conclusive evidence that the three men of Iraqi and Somali origin had planned to kill Lars Vilks in September last year.

The men were carrying knives when they were arrested after inquiring about Vilks at an art exhibition where he had been expected to appear but did not do so. Vilks lives under police protection after his 2007 drawing led to death threats from militant Islamists.
