Android Drives China Smartphone Adoption Past U.S.

Apple iPhone 5 Vs. Samsung Galaxy S III: What We Know

Apple iPhone 5 Vs. Samsung Galaxy S III: What We Know

(click image for larger view and for slideshow) The United States' standing as the number-one market for smartphones is about to end. By the end of the year, more smartphones will be sold in China than in the U.S., predicts IDC. The U.S. smartphone market is still growing, but China's is growing faster, and India's is growing the fastest of all.

In 2011, 21.3% of all smartphones sold around the globe were bought in the U.S. China was a close second, with 18.3% of the world's smartphone sales, followed by the U.K., in third place with a meager 5.3%.

Come December, the tables will have turned. Research firm IDC predicts that China will surpass the U.S., with 26.5% of all smartphone sales, and the U.S. will be responsible for 17.8% of smartphone sales. The U.K. will still rank third, with 4.5%.

Why is China's smartphone growth outpacing the U.S.? Low-end and inexpensive Android devices, explains IDC.

[ Will Apple's legal victory affect Samsung's bottom line? Read Are Consumers Dumping Samsung Smartphones? ]

"The PRC smartphone market will continue to be lifted by the sub-U.S. $200 Android segment," said IDC analyst Wong Teck-Zhung. "Near-term prices in the low-end segment will come down to U.S. $100 and below as competition for market share intensifies among smartphone vendors." Think ZTE, Huawei, and Coolpad. "Carrier-subsidized and customized handsets from domestic vendors will further support the migration to smartphones and boost shipments. Looking ahead to the later years in the forecast, the move to 4G networks will be another growth catalyst."

IDC notes that smartphone growth in China's largest cities is already slowing down, but growth rates in what it terms "second-tier" Chinese cities is picking up swiftly.

It's true that the U.S. has seen its own proliferation of low-cost Android devices, but carrier subsidies allow consumers here to purchase high-end devices for $200 with a contract. IDC also points out that just because China's smartphone adoption will pass the U.S. doesn't mean adoption of smartphones in the U.S. is slowing down. Not by a long shot.

"Now that smartphones represent the majority of mobile phone shipments, growth is expected to continue, but at a slower pace," said IDC analyst Ramon Llamas. "There is still a market for first-time users as well as thriving upgrade opportunities."

Carriers AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon Wireless all report that more than 50% of their customers are using smartphones. In recent quarters, the update of smartphone users in the U.S. has climbed dramatically, also thanks in part to low-cost Android devices.

Beyond these top three markets, the most growth in the coming years will come from India and Brazil. IDC reports that India's share of the worldwide smartphone market was 2.2% in 2011; it will be 2.5% this year and approximately 8.5% by 2016. That gives it a compound annual growth rate of 57.5% (compared to the U.S.'s 11.6% CAGR for the same period). Brazil's share will jump 44% between 2011 and 2016, from 1.8% to 4.4%.

Sponsorship opportunities available for 'Shop Rome First'

ROME ? Sponsorship opportunities are available until Sept. 28 for this year?s 11th annual ?Shop Rome First? Christmas holiday promotion.

The Shop Rome First Christmas Holiday Promotion is a four-week event between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

The Rome Area Chamber of Commerce presents Shop Rome First as a promotional campaign to encourage Central New Yorkers to discover many retail specialty stores in the Rome area.

Shop Rome First began in 2001 after a Zogby International poll discovered that 75 percent of Rome residents did their Christmas shopping outside of Rome.

Since 2002, dozens of lucky shoppers have won more than $100,000 in prizes donated by Rome businesses with the Chamber?s holiday ?Shop Rome First?and Win!? contest promotion.

Rome?s December sales tax revenues have consistently risen since the start of Shop Rome First. Now during its 11th year, the holiday contest will again entice shoppers to find gifts and products locally, minimize driving expenses, and win big, according to Chamber representatives.

This year between Nov. 22 and Dec. 21 shoppers will be able enter to win valuable prizes each time they visit a participating business.

The Rome Chamber uses e-mail reminders during the Christmas promotion to shoppers who have requested more information about shopping in Rome and throughout the year. Daily updates also reach Facebook and Twitter fans during the Christmas promotion as well.

The Rome Chamber uses promotions for the Shop Rome First through the Friday faxes, e-mail updates, and direct mail member updates.

Shop Rome First provides tools to encourage shoppers to find products and services locally, before they order online or travel to other commercial hubs in the region and beyond. Continued...

Chamber officials added that the community benefits each time a local purchase keeps sales tax dollars in Rome.

Sponsors will benefit from increased visibility during this peak shopping season, prominently mentioned in many venues that will be used to drive traffic into the stores, according to Chamber representatives.

Sponsors will also be mentioned in all of the regional promotions for a six-week pre-holiday period starting in November through Christmas and in year-round promotions through October 2013.

To be included in all promotions, the deadline is Sept. 28.

TALK DRINKS: The 36 Rules of Social Media (By Fast Company ...

The September 2012 issue of Fast Company features a series of articles relating to Social Media. Also known as the ?Social Media Roadmap? this series is a great resource for both content creators and content absorbers. One feature in particular, dubbed ?The 36 Rules of Social Media? gives readers just that, 36 digital tips to live by, written by various Founders, Presidents, CMOs, Authors and Heads of Social Media (among others). The tips are listed below, along with my personal comments on the ones that particularly relate to Wine & Spirits Industry.

  1. If all you do is respond to complaints, that's all people will send you.?
  2. Stop & Ask; Would an actual person talk this way?
    • A key component to engaging content is the manner in which it is spoken. Posts by the Wine & Spirits crowd often target both consumers and industry professionals - it is important for both of these to feel like they are being spoken with (not to).
  3. Everyone says they don't want to be marketed to. Really, they just don't want to be talked down to.
    • Exactly - as previously mentioned, speak WITH/ not TO? the audience in your posts.
  4. The consumer is out for himself, not for you.
  5. As monetization attempts go up, consumer experience goes down.
  6. Don't try to be clever. Be clever.
  7. Social is 24/7 not a one-time stunt.
    • As the old saying goes "If you can't do it well. Don't do it at all". Once you publicize your company's Facebook or Twitter account, users expect them to be active. If the account is collecting dust - shut it down. To avoid mishaps such as the potential frustration of a customer who posts about drinking your wine and never receives a response.
  8. Always write back
    • Building on the previous tip - ALWAYS WRITE BACK. Social media is just that, SOCIAL - if a user is taking his/her time out to applaud or diss your product it is of utmost importance to publicly respond. Showing the social universe you are there, present and amongst them, eventually results with brand loyalty and down the road, $ spent.
  9. Have an ROI. Have an ROI. Have an ROI.
  10. People would rather talk to "Comcast Melissa" than "Comcast".
  11. Solve problems for people who talk about you, even if they don't address you.
    • Especially vital for brands out there with limited distribution. It is a fact of social media life that many user posts express their negative thoughts and frustrations. Posts and tweets like "Can't figure out which wine to pair with my beef goulash" or "I would so love some XYZ tequila right now but have no idea where to find it" are your company's chance to shine. Be aware of on-line chatter beyond just that mentioning your brand. There are many social monitoring tools out there to assist in this.
  12. Not everything will work, and that's fine.
  13. Embrace negative content about your brand.
    • Sometimes the best comment is a negative one. It opens up the conversation to two things: 1- Your chance to directly address the concern of the commenter. 2- Your loyal fans to answer on your behalf.
  14. Everyone's an influencer.
  15. If fans distribute your content without permission, offer to help.
  16. It's okay to drive people to your site instead of Facebook's.
  17. Update your page - or delete it.
  18. Don't make people do X,Y, then Z. Stick with X.
  19. Last year: Pump out content. This year: Optimize content.
  20. Become BFFs with your Facebook reps.
  21. Social Media doesn't exist in a vacuum. Make traditional media and social media work together.
    • When developing your Social Media strategy it is important to, just like wine and food, pair it with the right traditional marketing mix. One is not better or a replacement of the other. The best campaigns work in sync - driving people offline to interact on-line and vice versa.
  22. Desktop is conquered territory. Mobile is the battlefield.
  23. If you don't see financial results, you wasted your money.
  24. People fights for their privacy.
  25. The only way to scale word of mouth: paid advertising.
  26. Have a crisis plan.
  27. Don't use ads to prop up boring content. Use ads to accelerate successful content.
  28. Forget individuals. You're creating content that encourages groups to form.
  29. People don't want to shop where they socialize.
  30. Contests and sweepstakes are fine. If you want to encourage short relationships.
  31. People care what you had for breakfast - if you're a food brand.
    • It may seem obvious, but this little gem is often overlooked. You are a vodka - do not post about your mother's favorite Elvis Presley song unless it relates. Your online fans are bombarded with literally 1,000s of pieces of information daily. Make sure ALL of your relates to your brand - do not waste your (or their) time.
  32. Pinterest works.
  33. Your fans own your brand.
  34. If you're bored by Social Media, it's because you're trying to get more value then you create.
  35. Think past vanity metrics like followers.
  36. It's an organism, not a process.

On Education, GOP Distances Itself From Tea Party

The Republican National Committee?s platform on education contains a lot of tea party buzzwords: abstinence, English-first, homeschooling, vouchers, local control. But the document also shows signs that the GOP is willing to embrace some type of benchmarking (that is, regulation) for public schools. The platform talks about ?accountability,? ?higher expectations for all students,? and options for students in failing schools. It?s a far cry from eliminating the Education Department.

Prominent education-reform advocates are hobnobbing in Tampa. They are the type of people who doggedly defend standards for student achievement and shun a hands-off approach. Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and Michelle Rhee, the former District of Columbia Public Schools chancellor, led a panel discussion on Tuesday at a screening of Won?t Back Down, a movie about two mothers who take on a failing inner-city public school. The event drew 1,000 delegates and guests.

Rhee?s grassroots-education group, StudentsFirst, will also be screening the film in Charlotte next week at the Democratic National Convention.

?A lot of people said to me beforehand, ?Well, you?ve got to be careful at these conventions. It tends to be the most radical people,? ? said Rhee, a Democrat, in an interview. ?We talked about bipartisanship a lot on that panel, and we got a really strong reception.?

Republicans love Rhee because she took on the teachers unions in D.C. by insisting that school layoffs eliminate the ineffective teachers, not the ones with the least tenure. Her message to Republicans is the same as it is to Democrats. ?I think that what both parties have to do between now and November is not kowtow to the special interests within their own party?Democrats with the teachers unions on their side and Republicans with the tea party on their side,? she said.

There are hints that Republicans are responding to her plea. Idaho?s schools superintendent, Tom Luna, led the platform committee in drafting the education plan. In his state, Luna implemented tough standards, including a new ?credit system? for the middle grades. During the committee?s deliberations, he said that Republicans would support ?innovative education reform? such as merit pay for teachers, removal of ?last in, first out? tenure protections, and ?education beyond high school??all things that a dogged advocate such as Rhee also supports.

But Rhee isn?t yet convinced that GOP support is for real. She applauded Mitt Romney for producing a meaty white paper on education, but she pointed out that he ignored the critical accountability factors that underpinned President George W. Bush?s signature No Child Left Behind law. ?They didn?t say, ?We?re not going to do it.? They didn?t say, ?We are going to do it.? They sort of just left it out,? she said. ?So, for me, that?s a little bit of a flag that they aren?t going to be as strong on accountability.?

The GOP?s chief message on education is school choice. Anyone familiar with the fight over D.C.?s controversial voucher program knows that choice is not an issue that can be resolved on the local level. The Republican platform says that the District?s voucher program, which the Obama administration has sought to defund, ?should be expanded as a model for the rest of the country.?

Zambia: Interview with Basement Entertainment | LusakaTimes.com

TIME PUBLISHED - Wednesday, August 29, 2012, 2:47 pm

Basement Entertainment is a?UK based Zambian events management and promotions company set out to?promote Zambian cultures and performing acts in the UK as well as?parts of Europe.

KAPA187:? ??How did Basement entertainment come about?

Basement entertainment: Wow, this takes us back; we came about out of the desire to do things differently and put the fun back into Djing.
In the early 2000s there was a group of us young Zambians, mostly students who used to come together at a friend?s flat at weekends and just play music the way we liked, putting our own stamp, swag and identity on it. Those early days developed our style, when you see us ?performing?; you get a glimpse of how we chill.

Bugz Money ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ??DJ Snypa

The founder members of the crew are Mr. Evans Miyanda (Team Patron), Oscar Miyanda (DJ Snypa), Harry Miyanda (Bugz Money), Milton Besa (DJ Milton Besa)?. ha ha ha?the only DJ who does not want a DJing name?lol! Other guys later joined us John Chinode Chisengalumbwe (Mc Jc Chinode II), Shawn L Sibamba (Big Shawn), Ray Nyakuchena (DJ Raypower our first Dual Zambia/Zimbabwean team member) and Andre Gordon (DJ Dre, our first Caribbean team member) with others on rotation across the UK. Our virtual existence in Zambia shall soon be a reality once our current mini team in Lusaka has completed logistical planning to operate in Zambia.

DJ Dre ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? DJ?Ray power?

It was actually at Milton?s penthouse in South East London (he lived above a shop, typical student accommodation?.ha ha ha.) where we came up with the name because his place felt like a basement though it was an upstairs flat and for some reason we were always there socializing, he could never get rid of us.

KAPA187:? ??What services do you provide?

Basement entertainment: We started out as DJs and were known as the Basement crew, until we branched out to music production when we co- produced Zambian musician TY2?s UK music project titled Nu Beginin? (Featuring his hit love song NIKUKONDE) in 2008, produced and recorded at Iguana studios in Brixton, South London at which time we changed our name to Basement Entertainment, which felt more business like, well, or so we thought.

Amongst other services, we provide public announcement systems on a corporate level e.g. one used during President Michael Sata recent visited to the UK, at the UK Zambian community dinner reception hosted at the Zambian high commissioner?s residence. We also provide music entertainment services, boasting of an all out experienced international DJ line-up, capable of handling any occasion around the world plus event venues, added to that, our in-house voice over artists, presenters with various event management and promotions solutions are on hand to provide a service, be it Zambian or other through our business networks across the UK. We also have an online presence where we host our very own online radio show (THE SHOW) at?http://www.basemententertainment.co.uk/?showcasing Zambian music and Dancehall music as enjoyed in the UK anchored by DJ Snypa, DJ Dre and Mc John Chinode II, supported by a live channel broadcast on Aggie rounds radio, UK.

Outside all these activities we work as volunteers with a UK based charity Butterfly tree that is headed by Jane Kay Bailey; Supporting rural communities in Zambia decimated by the HIV/Aids pandemic, providing safe water, feeding programs, improved health and education facilities with an orphan sponsorship program as well as supporting the fight against malaria in Zambia where together with the charity released a song titled ?Change For The Better? performed by Ty2, Kaufela, Late Crystal Shawn and Lillian Mweene produced and recorded at raising sound studios in Livingston, Zambia. (Find out more on how you can help atwww.thebutterflytree.org.uk)

You could say we are all round entertainers but also with a social responsibility for those in need back in Zambia.

KAPA187:? ?What is your opinion on the music industry in Zambia?

Basement entertainment: The scene is heading in the right the direction, we are particularly impressed with the strides made by Zambian hip hop, the industry now gets it, they are establishing an identity founded on being Zambian, they are not trying to imitate the American scene which is a major plus.

The management side of things still poor but there is room for it to develop; we think artist management and the industry regulatory system as a whole is still in its infancy. Zambian musicians are VERY creative and that is what they should concentrate on, issues like PR, marketing, legal and in general artist management should be handled by someone else not a friend. We are not saying it is not happening right now, we are just saying that there is a scope for growth and improvement.

KAPA187:? ?Which artists do you think are the best at this moment?

Basement entertainment: Truth be told, there far too many to mention.

KAPA187:? ?How do you promote Zambian music in UK, how has been the response?

Basement entertainment: We have a major platform with our online radio show as well as our mobile disco team with affiliation to some major UK radios and clubs. The response has been overwhelming, the emails, comments on our site and the feeling we get when we play out shows how much the music is loved by Zambians across the UK though this trend has grown as well within other communities where we have delivered the sounds from Zambia. We think mostly out of nostalgia, it is that connection with home. Zambians in the UK appreciate the music even more than people in Zambia especially judging by the requests we get as well as the missing home factor..

KAPA187:? ?Do you think Zambian comedians get enough exposure as compared to musicians?

Basement entertainment: Music is universal as they say; it is that factor that makes it more penetrative. Comedy is relative and if you cannot relate, it just is not funny. Issues like language are just some of the limiting factor or a major barrier for it to be accessible especially out here in the UK.

To make that transition from performing on the local scene to the international scene is not as easy for comedians as it is for Musicians that is the challenge.

KAPA187:? ?Who are some of your favorite Zambian Comedians?

Basement entertainment: Our very own Mc John Chinode II, you can catch him on our radio show. We like Bob Nkosha, Bikiloni and Diffikoti to mention but afew.

KAPA187:? ?It would seem easier to promote music internationally than a comedy act, due to cultural differences, what is your approach to promoting them and making sure they get enough exposure

Basement entertainment: We can only do so much; the onerous is pretty much on the artists themselves and their management companies. We can only expose what they present to us, we feel they need to really work on this aspect; they need to push and get their stuff out there where even a local Nigerian, English Man or Jamaican can relate.

KAPA187:? ?What other art forms do you cater to?

Basement entertainment: The Art of Life and staying safe especially amongst the youth, live by the rules. They are there for a reason to stay alive! Lol!

KAPA187:? ?How can the artists? get in touch with you?

Basement entertainment: Through our official website?www.basemententertainment.co.uk?or email?[email?protected]?as well as Facebook or Twitter.

KAPA187:? ?Any last words?.

Basement entertainment: Zambians world over should always remember Local is better. There is only one Zambia in the world which we all know is not going anywhere for generations to come. Let us, as Zambians support and stand by what?s Zambian if our industry is to move forward. Beside Zambia is the only home we have, lets be proud of the furniture we?ve put in it and in this case our entertainment industry it not always that international is better.

Finally, we are always looking for Zambian DJ?s and presenters for various community projects in your location, if anyone out there is interested contact us.

Colorado shooting victims' families blast fundraising charities

AURORA, Colorado (Reuters) - Families of people killed and wounded in a shooting rampage inside a Colorado movie theater in July said on Tuesday they were being denied a voice in how $5 million in donations raised to help them was being dispersed.

Tom Teves, whose son Alex was killed, said the first disbursement of funds went to various charities instead of victims and that a committee charged with distributing the money does not have any victims or their families on it.

"We are certain that everyone who donated their hard-earned wages intended for 100 percent of their donations to go directly to the victims," Teves said. "Unfortunately, it does not seem to be the case."

In an emotional news conference, 18 people representing families of the 12 who were killed and 58 who were wounded in the shooting accused some charities of soliciting funds by using victims' photographs without permission.

The Community First Foundation said $350,000 had been given directly to the victims or their families. The foundation, which manages the Aurora Victim Relief Fund, said it was dispersing money through smaller local charities that are responsible for distributing it to victims and their families.

Teves said $5,000 was given to each of the 70 victims' families only after they threatened to make public their concerns.

"The victims of 9/11 had similar issues with non-profit organizations keeping the donations from directly going to the victims until a handful of families put a stop to it," Teves said.

Community First's Executive Vice President Cheryl Haggstrom said, "We don't have direct communication with the families, but have been relying on professionals from police to the district attorney's office and victim advocates for them to tell us when it's the best time to include them."

She said the foundation was in the process of arranging a meeting with victims to get their input.

Former University of Colorado graduate student James Holmes, 24, is accused of opening fire inside the theater in Aurora on July 20 during a midnight screening of the Batman movie, "The Dark Knight Rises". He is being held in solitary confinement and without bond in the Arapahoe County jail.

U.S. Navy veteran Josh Nowlan, 32, who was severely wounded in the shooting, said he was slowly recovering but added that he knows families of those who died were suffering. "If I was a millionaire, I would give every dollar of it to them," he said.

New maps may reduce tourism impacts on Hawaiian dolphins

Tuesday, August 28, 2012

Over-eager eco-tourists intent on seeing spinner dolphins up close may inadvertently be disturbing the charismatic animals' daytime rest periods and driving them out of safe habitats in bays along Hawaii's coast.

Scientists at Duke and Stony Brook universities have developed a promising new tool that may help to limit repeated human disturbances and help reduce their negative impacts on the dolphins.

"Using the maps produced through this study we can identify the bays where the effects of human activities on spinner dolphins should be monitored most closely, and where immediate conservation actions are required," said David W. Johnston, research scientist at Duke's Nicholas School of the Environment.

The researchers' tool shows that only a small number of bays ? 21 out of 99 ? in a study area along the western coastlines of the main Hawaiian islands were suitable habitats for resting dolphins. Knowing this, "conservation efforts can be focused on specific areas of importance," Johnston said,

"We may be able to minimize detrimental effects on dolphins by putting restrictions or preventative measures into place in a relatively small number of bays, rather than limiting access to dolphins along the entire coast," said the study's lead author, Lesley H. Thorne, a lecturer in marine science at Stony Brook University, who received her PhD from Duke in 2010. "That benefits tourists and tourism operators as well as the dolphins."

In the study, the researchers used the geographic coordinates and key environmental factors ? such as water depth and calmness, the size and proportions of the bays and distances from deep-water foraging grounds ? for hundreds of spinner dolphin sightings made in the study area between 2000 and 2010. The results appear August 27 in the online, open-access peer-reviewed journal PLoS ONE.

Spinners are small dolphins famed for their graceful aerial movements and balletic spins. They are found in tropical and subtropical oceans around the world and some divide their time between daytime rest periods in shallow, protected bays and nighttime foraging in more exposed waters.

Distinguishing between sightings of resting and active dolphins was key to defining critical habitats, Thorne said. While socially active spinner dolphins are more tolerant of humans' presence, resting dolphins will leave the safety of a bay and retreat to less suitable open waters if humans repeatedly disturb them.

"Sleep is essential for most animals," added Johnston. "When deprived of their necessary 'zzzz's,' they gradually show a decreased ability to process information and remain attentive to environmental stimuli. In technical lingo, we call this a 'vigilance decrement'."

Spinner dolphins are no exception to the rule. The researchers say dolphins that experience human harassment every day during their rest periods never fully recover their vigilance decrement. Their ability to forage successfully and detect the presence of nearby predators is also degraded, and their ability to produce sounds to communicate and navigate may also be impaired, he said.

Scientists and conservationists have long worried that spinners' popularity with tourists ? and overlap of their resting habitats with popular ocean recreation destinations ? may be placing them at risk. Reports of interactions have increased sharply in recent years, but few published studies have examined the detrimental impacts these interruptions may have on the animals, especially at the population level.

"It would be next to impossible to survey spinner populations and human activities in every bay that might be a resting habitat," Thorne said. "We're talking about hundreds of bays in the Hawaiian islands alone."

"Using predictive models, such as the maximum entropy spatial modeling approaches we've produced, is a much more cost-effective method," she said. "This type of modeling has only recently been applied to the study of marine mammals, but our study suggests it may be especially useful."

Thorne and Johnston plan to test their models by conducting similar studies of spinner dolphin distributions and habitat use in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands and other sites in the Pacific islands region. Results from those studies, they said, could confirm the new models' usefulness.

Johnston and Thorne's co-authors on the PLoS ONE study include Dean L. Urban, professor of landscape ecology at Duke's Nicholas School, and Lars Bejdar, associate professor at Murdoch University, Australia, and adjunct assistant professor at Duke.

The data on spinner dolphin sightings used to develop the models in the study were provided by a team of eight additional co-authors from Murdoch University, the Pacific Islands Photo-Identification Network, the Cascadia Research Collective, the Hawai'i Marine Mammal Consortium, the Hawai'i Association for Marine Education and Research, the Dolphin Institute, the University of Hawai'i (UH) at Hilo, UH at M?noa, and Marine Mammal Research Consultants.

Neil Armstrong: A giant leap for modesty

The humility of Neil Armstrong after his moonwalk is a model for a balanced approach to giving credit for great achievements.

By the Monitor's Editorial Board / August 27, 2012

Astronaut Neil Armstrong turns towards the lunar module soon after he became the first man to set foot on the moon in July, 1969. He died at age 82 last Saturday.

REUTERS/NASA

In this age of celebrity obsession, it is rare for heroic figures to be honored for their humility. Yet the family of Neil Armstrong asked after his death last week that the former astronaut be remembered for his modesty as much as for his accomplishment in landing the Eagle spacecraft on the moon and being the first person to walk on another celestial body.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

His famous reluctance to revel in the limelight has set an important marker in a wider debate about the source of all great achievement, or when a person deserves credit for a great deed, discovery, invention, or creative work.

Apple, for example, won a $1 billion suit last week against Samsung for the stealing of patented ideas used in the iPhone. President Obama recently told entrepreneurs that they ?didn?t build? their businesses without the help of government. And almost monthly in the publishing industry, another case of an author plagiarizing a copyrighted work is exposed.

With these kinds of concerns about the origins of useful ideas or acts, Mr. Armstrong?s self-effacing modesty remains instructive.

He said the moon landing in July 1969 was not so much his doing as simply an ?achievement that a third of a million people had been working for a decade to accomplish.? All the scientists, engineers, and others connected to space exploration are the unsung heroes of historic feats in space. His role was significant but perhaps less important than, say, the designing of the Saturn rocket.

Armstrong?s modesty echoes that of Sir Issac Newton, who discovered calculus and the laws of gravitation and later wrote to his rival, Robert Hooke: ?If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants.?

Breakthroughs in thought or action are most often built on the past achievements of others. But society is benefited by giving credit and allowing a monopoly privilege to an idea in order to serve a public purpose: encouraging further breakthroughs.

Today?s competition for new ideas in the global economy has become so fierce that it severely challenges the intellectual property system that first arose in the 18th century. A new balance is needed between a right to one?s originality and the free flow of ideas that spurs originality.

Despite Armstrong?s image as a rugged individual who mastered spaceflight, he argued for collaboration in modern-day achievements. His boyhood hero was Charles Lindbergh, another heroic icon of aeronautics; but by the 1960s, science and technology had become too complex to sustain the idea of great solo acts. Even Steve Jobs said his greatest achievement would be leaving behind a team at Apple that can keep coming up with more cool designs.

The very nature of ideas is that they are universal enough for anyone to discover and, once known, can be shared for the benefit of all. Society must decide how much to grant credit or lock in ownership of ideas in order to encourage more progress.

The one time that Armstrong spoke out forcefully after his moon landing was to decry budget cuts to the space program. He spoke of ?our investment? in space exploration. It was as if he once again was noting his own ?small step? in reaching the moon while also paying tribute to the larger cause, a ?giant leap for mankind.?

Those historic words were well chosen by a man who lived them.

Obama Finalizes Landmark Fuel Efficiency Standards

As Republicans gather in Tampa despite an imminent hurricane, to officially nominate a presidential candidate who remains mute on climate change and it's potential to flood convention centers in low lying areas, President Obama has finalized landmark new fuel-efficiency standards which will cut tailpipe greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2025.

The new standard will require cars, pickup trucks and SUVs to achieve 54.5 miles per gallon, or approximately double the average mileage of cars on the road today over the next thirteen years.

This is the third time Obama has raised fuel economy standards and builds upon the 2009 goal of 35.5 miles per gallon by 2016. The action cements the Administration's commitment to reducing America's dependency on oil as part of Obama's national energy policy.

RELATED: Will Obama and Romney Talk About Climate Change During the Presidential Debate?

Romney's campaign was quick to respond to the announcement, highlighting the sharp contrast between the two candidates when it comes to their respective plans for powering the nation.

"Governor Romney opposes the extreme standards that President Obama has imposed, which will limit the choices available to American families. The President tells voters that his regulations will save them thousands of dollars at the pump, but always forgets to mention that the savings will be wiped out by having to pay thousands of dollars more upfront for unproven technology that they may not even want,? said Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul in a statement.

While the Administration doesn't deny that the new standards will increase the cost of a new car, perhaps by as much as $2,000, the White House argues that the $8,000 a new car owner is forecast to save over the life of the car should more than compensate for a higher price sticker at the car dealership.

?These fuel standards represent the single most important step we?ve ever taken to reduce our dependence on foreign oil,? President Obama said in a statement Tuesday. ?It?ll strengthen our nation's energy security, it's good for middle class families and it will help create an economy built to last."

The nation's biggest and most influential green groups have been outspoken in their support of Obama's efforts.

Margie Alt, Executive Director of Environment America said that "Decades from now, the clean car standards finalized today by the Obama Administration will be highlighted as a monumental turning point in America?s quest to get off oil and tackle global warming."

Sierra Club Executive Director, Michael Brune said "Today, President Obama has taken the most significant action by any President in history to move our country off oil and slash dangerous, climate disrupting pollution that threatens our children?s future."

(AP Photo/Sebastian Scheiner)

(AP) ? An Israeli court ruled Tuesday that the military was not at fault for killing a U.S. activist crushed by an army bulldozer during a 2003 demonstration, rejecting a lawsuit filed by her parents.

The bulldozer driver has said he didn't see 23-year-old Rachel Corrie, a pro-Palestinian activist who was trying to block the vehicle's path during a demonstration in the Gaza Strip against the military's demolition of Palestinian homes.

The military deemed her March 2003 death an accident, but Corrie's parents said the driver acted recklessly and filed a civil lawsuit two years later.

Explaining the district court's ruling, Judge Oded Gershon said Corrie "put herself in a dangerous situation" and called her death "the result of an accident she brought upon herself." He said the military conducted a proper investigation and rejected the Corrie family's request for a symbolic $1 in damages and legal expenses.

Corrie's family, who flew in from the U.S. for the verdict, lamented the court's ruling.

"We are of course, deeply saddened and deeply troubled by what we heard today," said her mother, Cindy Corrie of Olympia, Washington. "I believe this was a bad day. Not only for our family but for human rights, the rule of law, and also for the country of Israel."

The family said it was strongly considering an appeal to the Israeli Supreme Court, but wanted to read the full verdict before making a final decision.

Corrie's sister, Sarah, held up a picture of her sister lying lifeless in bulldozer tracks. The family's lawyer, Hussein Abu Hussein pointed at it: "How did the bulldozer not see her?" he asked. To say that the driver did not see her "is lies to the living and also lies to the dead."

Following the verdict, the Israeli state prosecutor's office called Corrie's death a "tragic accident" but noted the court exonerated the military of "any blame for negligence." It said it had presented three investigations that found the driver could not have seen Corrie, and noted that the driver acted in a "a military action in the course of war."

"The work was done while exercising maximum caution and prudence and without the ability to foresee harming anyone," it said.

The home demolitions were part of an unsuccessful campaign to halt thousands of attacks on soldiers and Jewish settlers in southern Gaza, along the border with Egypt, in the preceding 3 ? years. On the day Rachel Corrie died, she and other activists had entered a closed military zone to protest the demolition policy.

According to the U.N. agency handling Palestinian refugees, the military had left more than 17,000 Gazans homeless in the four years after a Palestinian uprising against Israel erupted in September 2000. The demolitions drew international condemnation at the time.

In her death, Corrie became the embodiment of what Palestinian activists say is Israel's harsh repression of nonviolent protest to occupation. Israel says by entering conflict zones to try to interfere with military activities, activists recklessly choose to risk their lives.

Her parents have relentlessly pursued her case since going to court in 2005 after a military investigation cleared the driver.

They say they have spent $200,000 to fly in witnesses, attend 15 hearings and translate more than 2,000 pages of court transcripts.

At the news conference, Cindy Corrie read a passage from one of her daughter's letters, biting her lip as her husband, grim-faced, held a microphone for her.

"Life is very difficult. Human beings can be kind, brave and strong, even in the most difficult of circumstances," Rachel Corrie wrote. "Thank you for existing, for showing how good people can be, despite great hardship."

The Corrie case was the first civil lawsuit of a foreigner harmed by Israel's military to conclude in a full civilian trial. Others have resulted in out-of-court settlements.

Oil rises more than $1, tropical storm threatens supply

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Oil futures rose more than a dollar on Monday, with Brent climbing above $115 per barrel, on supply worries as Tropical Storm Isaac threatened to interrupt most U.S. offshore oil production in the Gulf of Mexico.

Oil prices got a further boost from hopes of more U.S. stimulus measures, which would improve the outlook for demand from the world's top consumer of oil.

Brent crude futures rose $1.25 to $114.42 a barrel by 0635 GMT, after rising to a high of $115.50 earlier in the session. U.S. crude was up 96 cents to $97.11.

"The storm will have a temporary impact on prices. But everyone is waiting for the European Central Bank and U.S. Federal Reserve meetings ahead," said Tony Nunan, a risk manager at Mitsubishi Corp in Tokyo.

"Technically, Brent has been strong, so it looks like it's continuing that trend after the temporary blip on Friday and simply reversing the falls."

Oil prices fell on Friday after a report that the International Energy Agency is likely to tap strategic oil reserves as soon as September, dropping its resistance to a U.S.-led plan.

But prices are now turning upwards ahead of the annual U.S. Jackson Hole meeting of central bankers and economists later this week, where Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke will deliver a speech that will be scoured for clues on a third round of quantitative easing.

The markets will also look for policy signals from the euro zone ahead of a September 6 meeting of the European Central Bank.

"The markets are now getting excited about the possibility of additional monetary stimulus by the Federal Reserve," said Ben Le Brun, a Sydney-based market analyst at OptionsXpress.

"I don't think traders will want to be caught short ahead of the Jackson Hole meeting especially when there's an upside risk."

SUPPLY DISRUPTION FEARS

Oil prices drew support from the threat to U.S. offshore oil production in the Gulf of Mexico from the Tropical Storm Isaac, which is expected to strengthen to a Category 2 hurricane and hit the Gulf Coast somewhere between Florida and Louisiana by midweek.

Meteorologists at Weather Insight, an arm of Thomson Reuters, predict the storm will spur short-term shutdowns of 85 percent of the U.S. offshore oil production capacity and 68 percent of the natural gas output.

The Gulf of Mexico accounts for about 23 percent of U.S. oil production and 7 percent of natural gas output, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).

About 30 percent of U.S. natural gas processing plant capacity and 44 percent of the country's refining capacity also line the Gulf Coast, the EIA said.

There are other supply worries as well.

Delays in Iraq's pipeline construction threaten to stall production at Royal Dutch Shell's Majnoon oilfield for at least three months, forcing the field to miss a 2012 target of 175,000 barrels per day.

In Norway, oil services workers broke off wage talks with oil companies on Friday, taking the sector a step closer to its second strike within two months.

Norway's vital oil sector was hamstrung last month when production workers held a 16-day strike over pay and the right to early retirement, driving up oil prices.

An upcoming maintenance-related drop in North Sea output and ongoing Middle East turmoil also underpinned Brent prices.

Britain's largest oilfield, Buzzard, which is the single biggest contributor to the Forties crude oil stream and usually sets the price of the Brent benchmark, will shut next month, suspending output until mid-October.

Adding to Middle East uncertainties, Iran's foreign minister urged delegates at a Non-Aligned Movement developing nations summit on Sunday to oppose sanctions imposed by the West.

U.S. gasoline prices also increased after a fire at Venezuela's biggest refinery, the 645,000 barrels per day (bpd) Amuay plant.

Canadian Natural Mama ~ Product Reviews: Starlight, Starbright

?Starlight, Starbright, first start I see tonight, I wish I may I wish I might, have this wish I wish tonight....

If you are part of any of the babywearing communities on facebook, you will have heard of Suzi's beautiful wrap scrap animals before... if not... let me tell you a little about them. First of all... girl has TALENT!!! As a crafty person myself, I will tell you this, sewing is NOT easy... sewing little tiny pieces together... even harder... sewing tiny pieces together and having them look AWESOME... nearly impossible. Suzi, seems to whip up these little guys in no time at all, and they look amazing. I must admit, I am jealous of her skills. Teach me your ways, oh wise crafter! These sweet little guys are the perfect size for your little one to grasp themselves, and can easily be tethered onto any pacifier or toy leash for the perfect addition to any baby carrier. If your child is like mine, that leash will come in handy ;) and save your poor back and knees every time said child throws said giraffe to the ground giggling manically, which I have to admit is probably pretty entertaining for anyone BUT me. Sigh.
Starbright animals are meant to be chewed and teethed on, and are all handmade with quality materials (pre-washed 100% cotton fabric and stuffed using hypoallergenic polyfill) by Miss. Suzi herself so you can know and trust what is going into your babe's sweet little mouth. With a lot of baby toys on the market these days I often find myself questioning if I realllly should be giving it to my child. So many are cheap, painted, BPA filled plastic and I worry about what chemicals my kids may be ingesting without me even knowing.? Since it is pretty much impossible to keep toys out of your child's mouth at ALL times, why not start by giving your child only quality? Quality toys often cost a bit more (actually Starbright animals are really affordable), but really... when it comes to the safety of your child why not start replacing the plastic one toy at a time... starting withhhhhh....? ?Starbright Baby now provides a few different options, aside from their wrap scrap and organic giraffes, they now have toddler sized giraffes, adorable zebras, rhinos, and crinkle squares, too! Fun! I totally think I should get a rhino for my little beanie on the way. I am just loving the Didymos Rhino. Sooo cute. Two of my loves mashed together wraps and sweet little baby toys. ?? Starbright Baby handmade teethers are a guaranteed crowd pleaser, and make the perfect little addition to any baby shower gift. I would seriously melt if someone went to the trouble of buying one of these sweeties for my little babe. Why not stock up on a few for stocking stuffers for Christmas while you are at it ;) Browse the Starbright Baby etsy shop and find your favorites... and like a certain chip brand says, "bet you can't *eat* just one". ;) haha.? You can even get one to match your... errrr your baby's woven wrap. Who cares if your shoes don't match your purse, or however that is supposed to go... your baby's awesome giraffe can match your equally awesome wrap ;) now that is stylin'. Check out our friend Tanya from Precious Earth and her Marley lovin' Babes (psst... drop Tanya a line if you are interested in adopting one of the giraffes that just wandered into her shop).

?Starbright baby sent us an adorable giraffe made from a striped green BB Slen wrap scrap (my fave colour BTW) and boy was I impressed. For months now I have seen Suzi's creations online and have drooled over their sweetness but had yet to see one in real life. My husband and I drove down to the mailbox to pick it up, after some confusion thinking it had been lost in the mail, I was relived to see that it was in fact there. I opened it immediately... waiting is definitely not one of my strong suits ;) I squealed at just how cute it really was. I knew my little bean would looooove it, and I was right. As soon as I got it home she hugged it and began carrying it around, pushing it in her little shopping cart and tending to her new baby "gi-aff's" every need. Gi-aff now sleeps in bed beside her with his own blankie. This past weekend we even went to the fair and had to bring it with us, which was super cute.?

"DADDY! DADDY! GI-AFF!!!" *sigh* Love at first site.

? * Please note, I do not condone giving babies/toddlers suckers...?

some lovely person at the fair gave one to my daughter, which?

we promptly stole away to hide for us to consume later *

Like I mentioned, Starbright teethers are the perfect size for little hands and are built to last. Cupcake is getting her eye teeth and boy are they being stubborn. :( She is finding her baby gi-aff's head and legs awesome for chewing on.OK, that sounded a bit Silence of the Lambs-ish but you guys know what I mean... I hope. Starbright animals are sturdy, with just enough stuffing to help them keep their shape without making them rough and weapon like if baby decides to throw one at you. Not that YOUR baby would, right? With this giraffe I never have to worry that she might accidentally bite something off, swallow some gross liquid or that it will start making some terrible noise when its body is pushed.Yep, that's right, one of the best parts about these teethers are that they are silent. Can I get an amen, mamas??? What a perfect little lovey for your babe! Haha YAY for real moms creating products for real kids. I know that if I give Cupcake her giraffe to play with in the car that I won't want to throw it out the window five minutes into our trip. We both win! She has a little buddy to play with, and mama has a fairly silent car ride! Hey, I didn't say these teethers were MAGIC...they can't get rid of ALL the noise that your kids make but I can guarantee that they won't squeak, shriek, flash lights, or sing annoying songs. ;) Which equals awesome in my books.

So ... which one will you be bringing home?

?

Thanks again Starbright Baby!
