Bomb damages Panathinaikos fan club in Greece

Associated Press Sports

updated 12:35 p.m. ET Jan. 30, 2012

PATRAS, Greece (AP) -Greek police say an improvised explosive device has exploded outside a Panathinaikos fan club, causing extensive damage but no injuries.

A police statement on Monday says the pre-dawn explosion in the southern city of Patras smashed windows in surrounding homes and shops and severely damaged five parked cars.

Police are investigating the possible involvement of rival fans.

Panathinaikos currently leads the Greek league.

Wall Street tumbles on stalled Greek debt talks

By Reuters

NEW YORK ? U.S. stocks fell on Monday after Greece's efforts to reach a debt restructuring with creditors stalled and European leaders struggled to change the market's focus to a push for economic growth on the continent.

Traders sold bank stocks as Germany sought to tone down reports it was pushing for Greece to give up control over its budget policy to European institutions. Greece was unlikely to accept that scenario, presenting another obstacle to a second bailout package for Athens.

The issues with Greece added to uncertainty surrounding a summit where European Union leaders will sign off on a permanent rescue fund for the euro zone.

"There was widespread belief that the private sector participation in the Greek debt negotiations would have been completed over the weekend," said Jack de Gan, chief investment officer at Harbor Advisory Corp in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. "That was the first disappointment."

He said Berlin's requirements from Athens are "a non-starter politically," and the market sees that as yet another hurdle before the next disbursement of cash to Greece.

The financial sector, down 1.5 percent, was the biggest drag on the S&P 500. Bank of America fell 2.2 percent to $7.05.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 88.44 points, or 0.70 percent, to 12,572.02. The S&P 500 Index dropped 9.18 points, or 0.70 percent, to 1,307.15. The Nasdaq Composite Index slipped 9.47 points, or 0.34 percent, to 2,807.08.

Major indexes were earlier down more than 1 percent.

Apple shares helped cap losses on the Nasdaq after Morgan Stanley said the iPhone maker could add China Telecom and China Mobile as distributors over the next year. Apple rose 1.1 percent to $452.

Energy stocks were lower but pared losses as crude futures briefly turned positive. Exxon Mobil fell 1.2 percent to $84.84.

Swiss engineering group ABB agreed to buy U.S. electrical components maker Thomas & Betts Corp for $3.9 billion in cash, sending shares of the company up 22.3 percent to $71.03.

U.S. consumer spending was flat in December as households took advantage of the largest rise in income in nine months to boost their savings, setting the tone for a slowdown in demand early in 2012.

Romney picks up 2 delegates in South Carolina (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Mitt Romney has picked up a consolation prize from the South Carolina Republican presidential primary: two delegates.

Newt Gingrich handily won the Jan. 21 primary and got 23 of the state's 25 delegates. South Carolina Republicans awarded 11 delegates to the statewide winner and two delegates for winning each of the state's seven congressional districts.

Gingrich won six congressional districts, but the vote in one district was too close to call on election night. State party political director Alex Stroman said Monday the party had determined Romney won the district by about 1,400 votes.

Romney now has 35 delegates, including endorsements from Republican National Committee members who will automatically attend the convention. Gingrich has 25 and Rick Santorum has 14. It takes 1,144 delegates to win the nomination.

Pakistani Genius Teen Arfa Karim Dies, Draws Worldwide Praise (ContributorNetwork)

The death of Pakistani child genius Arfa Karim Randhawa from an epileptic episode at age 16 is reflecting common ground during a time of worldwide conflict.

U.S. citizens have been questioning aid to Pakistan, questioning whether a supposed ally harbored Osama bin Laden and has been a haven to al-Qaida terrorists.

A child's story establishes the common ground.

Arfa Karim, with support from her parents, was a gifted child and a Third World computer prodigy. A writeup in The Express Tribune, an arm of the International Herald Tribune, expresses sentiment that she made an impact during her short-lived 16 years. The girl worked hard to make the most of her gifts and talents, becoming the youngest Microsoft Certified Professional at age 9, earning the praise and consideration of none other than Bill Gates. He worked to ensure she had the best medical care after her Dec. 22 epileptic seizure led to heart failure and brain damage. At the age of 10, Arfa Karim achieved a license to pilot an airplane.

Her story resonates with parents worldwide who aspire that their children achieve full potential. In addition to salutes from Microsoft, Arfa Karim Randhawa received numerous awards and gold medals from government and private institutions.

Citizens who react to Arfa Karim's premature death by doing Google searches for Arfa Karim Randhawa will find her posed for a photo, chin in hand, in an outdoor setting. This was uncommon in her hometown of Lahare, Pakistan, where girls and women often are culturally subordinated. Arfa Karim told journalist Todd Bishop, "If you want to do something big in life, you must remember that shyness is only the mind. If you think shy, you act shy. If you think confident, you act confident. Therefore, never let shyness conquer your mind."

Man arrested in slayings of SC officer, Ga. woman

(AP) ? A 26-year-old man was arrested Saturday after police say he killed his girlfriend in Georgia, and then fatally shot a South Carolina police officer responding to a report of suspicious activity, authorities said.

Police in South Carolina said Joshua Tremaine Jones faces charges of murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime in the death of Aiken police Master Cpl. Sandra Rogers.

The South Carolina law Enforcement Division said officers were responding Saturday morning to a report of suspicious activity involving two cars, and that Rogers was shot after stopping one of the vehicles.

Jones was arrested hours later at a residence in Batesburg.

Saturday evening, a visibly moved Aiken Public Safety director Charles Barranco told reporters that Rogers had died at an area hospital. The Aiken native had spent a nearly 28-year career with the department; she was 49.

In neighboring Georgia, The Augusta Chronicle reported that Jones also faces murder charges in the death of his girlfriend, 21-year-old Cayce Vice. Police found her body in her apartment Saturday morning after she didn't show up for work at a Five Guys restaurant and coworkers became concerned; she had been shot in the head.

Richmond County sheriff's Capt. Scott Peebles told the newspaper (http://bit.ly/yO5JS7 ) that the agency had obtained warrants for Jones for murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Peebles confirmed that Vice had sworn out a complaint against Jones for assault earlier this month.

A phone message left late Saturday for the Richmond County Sheriff's Office was not immediately returned.

James Jones, the suspect's father, told reporters that his son had past run-ins with the law and "was going through some mental problems." Jones said his son had run away from home and moved in with Vice. He said his son is from North Augusta and briefly lived in Atlanta.

Jones said that when he returned from work Friday, his son had taken his blue BMW without permission and left. Jones said he and his other son drove around searching but couldn't locate him.

Jones said his heart goes out to the victim' families, and that he's devastated as a father.

"I just went straight to God and said, 'I cannot believe this.' After all that I have taught him, I just never thought that my family would have to deal with something like this," Jones said.

The Aiken public safety department issued a statement Saturday evening praising Rogers as "an invaluable street cop who exemplified the model of a Public Safety Officer," according to WLTX-TV in Columbia, S.C.

"Master Corporal Rogers was a highly skilled investigator and senior patrol officer on her shift," the statement said. "Please keep the Rogers family and Aiken Public Safety in your prayers as once again we deal with this tragic loss."

Last month, hundreds of people gathered to mourn another Aiken police officer killed in the line of duty. Officer Scotty Richardson, 33, died in the early hours of Dec. 21 after being shot in the head during a traffic stop at an apartment complex the night before. Aiken is a city of 30,000 that's located about 20 miles northwest of Augusta.

Fireworks send Beijing air pollution soaring (AP)

BEIJING ? Clouds of smoke from Lunar New Year fireworks sent air pollution in Beijing soaring under a new more sensitive measurement system, reports said Sunday.

Readings of fine particulate matter called PM2.5 reached 1.593 milligrams per cubic meter on the Jan. 22 eve of the holiday, about 100 times worse than the amount considered good for 24-hour exposure, the city's environmental bureau said.

The reading drew wide publicity in the local media on Sunday. The popular Beijing Youth Daily praised the city government for taking a more critical look at air pollution, while urging residents to consider the environmental effects of setting off fireworks.

By noon on Sunday, as people headed back to work after the weeklong holiday, the level stood at a relatively good 0.039.

Concern has grown over air pollution from automobiles and other sources, prompting the city this month to begin announcing measurements of PM2.5 ? particles less than 2.5 micrometers in size. That's about 1/30th the width of an average human hair.

Because of their small size, the particles can lodge deeply in the lungs and are believed to pose the greatest risk to health.

Beijing is frequently cloaked in yellow haze, with buildings a couple of blocks away barely visible.

On particularly bad days, schools cancel outdoor activities due to the risk of respiratory problems and hospitals report increased numbers of people ? particularly the elderly ? seeking help because they're having trouble breathing. Long-term exposure can cause a range of illnesses, especially to the cardiovascular system.

The city previously only released readings of the coarser PM10 standard that often indicated pollution was "light," leading to accusations it was hiding the true extent of the problem.

The U.S. Embassy began independently monitoring PM2.5 from a device on its rooftop and releasing the results via Twitter. Some residents even tested the air in their neighborhoods and posted the results online.

Beijing is now releasing hourly readings of PM2.5 that are taken from a monitoring site about 4 miles (7 kilometers) west of central Tiananmen Square.

A team of biologists at the University of York has made an important advance in our understanding of the way cholera attacks the body. The discovery could help scientists target treatments for the globally significant intestinal disease which kills more than 100,000 people every year.

The disease is caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae, which is able to colonise the intestine usually after consumption of contaminated water or food. Once infection is established, the bacterium secretes a toxin that causes watery diarrhoea and ultimately death if not treated rapidly. Colonisation of the intestine is difficult for incoming bacteria as they have to be highly competitive to gain a foothold among the trillions of other bacteria already in situ.

Scientists at York, led by Dr. Gavin Thomas in the University's Department of Biology, have investigated one of the important routes that V. cholerae uses to gain this foothold. To be able to grow in the intestine the bacterium harvests and then eats a sugar, called sialic acid, that is present on the surface of our gut cells.

Collaborators of the York group at the University of Delaware, USA, led by Professor Fidelma Boyd, had shown previously that eating sialic acid was important for the survival of V. cholerae in animal models, but the mechanism by which the bacteria recognise and take up the sialic was unknown.

The York research, funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), demonstrates that the pathogen uses a particular kind of transporter called a TRAP transporter to recognise sialic acid and take it up into the cell. The transporter has particular properties that are suited to scavenging the small amount of available sialic acid. The research also provided some important basic information about how TRAP transporters work in general.

The leader of the research in York, Dr. Gavin Thomas, said: "This work continues our discoveries of how bacteria that grow in our body exploit sialic acid for their survival and help us to take forward our efforts to design chemicals to inhibit these processes in different bacterial pathogens."

The research is published in the latest issue of the Journal of Biological Chemistry and was primarily the work of Dr Christopher Mulligan, a postdoctoral fellow in the Dr Thomas's laboratory.

England looks to US sports to add glitz to FA Cup

By ROB HARRIS

updated 7:56 p.m. ET Jan. 26, 2012

LONDON - Seeking to restore the allure of the FA Cup, English soccer is looking to American sports to see how some glitz can be added to the final of world soccer's oldest domestic cup competition.

Once the main event in the English soccer calendar and a must-see TV event globally, some of the cup's appeal has been lost as the more lucrative Premier League and Champions League appear to be outshining the 140-year competition.

Wembley Stadium has staged NFL regular-season games for five years, giving a glimpse of how the FA Cup final could be spiced up with more entertainment and glamor there.

"We are always learning, we are investing more internal marketing resources alongside that (broadcaster) ITV and Budweiser put in," FA General Secretary Alex Horne said while overlooking the Wembley field.

"As a collective we all think we can make something more of the day of the final and the event ? whether it's on the pitch or the buildup to the event.

"Of course we can learn from the NBA events or the NFL events ... there are many people who do this well."

While looking west across the Atlantic for inspiration on event management, Horne is not losing sight of the competition's big fan base in the East.

"The FA Cup continues to attract huge audiences throughout the world, especially in Asia," Horne said. "China and Thailand are huge markets for English football and the FA Cup in particular. We had a global audience of half a billion for the FA Cup final last year, so we know it's a very relevant product."

But the FA Cup final could be moved from its traditional kickoff time this season in a bid to boost British TV audiences, potentially hitting Asian viewing figures.

The final is set to be at 5:15 p.m. instead of 3 p.m, while talks are under way with the Premier League about preventing a repeat of last season when the match had to be played on the same day as a topflight league program for the first time in 50 years.

That led to Manchester United clinching a record 19th league title just before local rival City ended a 35-year trophy drought by lifting the FA Cup at Wembley.

"The important thing for us is giving (the final) an identity, even if it is not on the last day of the season," Horne said.

The problem of the FA Cup final sharing the day with other big matches in England could be exacerbated by the Champions League final returning to Wembley in 2013 after being staged there last May. UEFA needs the stadium for two weeks before the match.

But ahead of the fourth round this weekend, the FA has sought to highlight the enduring value of the cup, with a study showing that clubs have collectively earned around $1 billion over the past 10 years in prize money, TV payments and ticket revenue.

Such rewards can have a transformational effect on teams ? particularly those lower down the pecking order.

"When Burton secured a replay at Old Trafford (against Manchester United in 2006) they earned $1.1 million in that year," Horne said. "That enabled them to pay off the debt on their stadium, invest in playing talent and ultimately progress into the Football League.

"Crawley last year earned $2.4 million from the competition, including a 1-million pound ($1.6 million) payday at Old Trafford."

The FA Cup is in the first year of a $38 million, three-year title sponsorship deal with American beer brand Budweiser.

Cooling China worries some multinationals (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Slowing growth in China is emerging as a concern in some of this quarter's earnings reports from U.S. multinationals that have long relied on strong growth in China and other emerging markets to drive their profits.

Though China's economic growth is still well above that in other economies, its efforts to cool that growth -- for example, by restricting credit -- are now translating into weaker sales at some U.S. companies that do business there.

The trend is not yet widespread and companies are quick to stress the many advantages of China's market, but the commentary this earnings season has taken a more cautious tone.

3M Co's (MMM.N) Asia-Pacific sales rose 3 percent in the latest quarter, weaker than in recent results, reflecting softer demand in China.

"The Chinese government successfully slowed activity to stem inflation," 3M Chief George Buckley said on a conference call with analysts. "Our China team anticipate continued below-trend growth in the first half of 2012."

The maker of Post-It notes, Scotch tape and components for consumer electronics reported net earnings of $954 million, or $1.35 per share, beating estimates by 4 cents a share.

One weak spot was the company's display and graphics segment, hurt by what 3M called "deteriorating" demand for consumer electronics. The business showed its largest sales declines in Asia Pacific.

Another global manufacturer, Eaton Corp (ETN.N), singled out China as one of several factors behind its sales miss.

The maker of electrical control systems and auto and truck components reported a disappointing quarterly profit on Thursday, saying U.S. customers delayed major projects, Europe's economies hurt sales, and tight credit dampened China sales of electrical equipment.

"They had to slow growth down because inflation was taking off very quickly," Chief Executive Sandy Cutler said in an interview, adding Brazil and India have also slowed and that China's leaders are "now talking about easing credit, and it's likely to take some time for the easing (to take effect)."

U.S. companies have received an earnings boost in recent quarters from emerging economies at a time when many U.S. end-markets were struggling or growing only feebly. Recent economic data, however, hinted U.S. economic growth may be a bit faster than was expected a few months ago. Friday's report is expected to show U.S. GDP accelerated to a 3 percent rate in the fourth quarter, from 1.8 percent in the third.

Eaton shares were down 2 percent at $48.54 and 3M was up 1.2 percent at $87.55 on Thursday afternoon.

SINGLE-DIGIT GDP GROWTH

"A lot of the growth prospects for these companies overseas have been (dependent) on what happens in China," said Catherine Avery, president and CEO of CAIM LLC, which holds Eaton shares as well as Illinois Tool Works Inc (ITW.N) and Emerson Electric Co (EMR.N), which have not yet reported results.

"If they do slow, it's going to be an issue," she said, adding that economic growth of 8 percent, though down from 11 percent, is still pretty good compared with the rest of the world.

China, like the United States, is affected by Europe's debt problems and slowing euro zone economies, Avery said, so until investors obtain clarity on how Europe resolves its issues, long-term corporate forecasts need to be taken with a grain of salt. Many companies are rightly sticking to very broad 2012 forecasts.

To be sure, any China slowdown may well be short-lasting. 3M's chief operating officer, Inge Thulin, said faster growth in China would return later in the year.

"Whatever challenges (emerging markets) present today pale in comparison to the opportunities," he told analysts.

Likewise, Caterpillar Inc (CAT.N), whose earnings blew away expectations, noted China has already restarted policies to support growth, and said it expects further easing is likely. It estimated China's economy will grow 8.5 percent in 2012, "sufficient for growth in construction and increased commodity demand."

The world's largest heavy machinery maker said net income for the fourth quarter was $1.55 billion, or $2.32 per share, compared with $968 million, or $1.47 per share, a year ago. That result was 59 cents above the analysts' average estimate, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Sales rose 35 percent to $17.24 billion, above Wall Street estimates of $16.05 billion.

Caterpillar said Thursday construction machinery sales have declined in China, but noted that parts sales have performed better. Sales in other Asia/Pacific countries are much better than in China, the company said.

Signs of a China slowdown cropped up in the results of two other multinational companies this week, and affected investor sentiment toward a third.

At United Technologies Corp (UTX.N), which reported results on Wednesday, slowing Chinese elevator orders were a factor in weaker-than-expected revenue growth.

TE Connectivity (TEL.N) reported disappointing results. The electronic connector maker's communications and industrial solutions business reported lower sales both year-over-year and sequentially. Within that business, appliance sales fell amid weak new home construction and fewer government incentives in China, the company said.

Meanwhile option investors appear to have worries about Yum Brands Inc (YUM.N), taking out protection against a share price decline ahead of the fast-food chain's report next month.

Prospects of slowing Chinese growth and unfavorable exchange rates, the same factors that threaten rival McDonald's Corp (MCD.N), are worrying investors, analysts say.

In a statement on his website, Assange said he will host a series of interview programs with "key political players, thinkers and revolutionaries." ?The show will appear on Russia Today (RT), a Kremlin-financed English-language satellite news network.

The program, called "The World Tomorrow," will be taped at?the?house north of London where Assange has been under house arrest since December 2010.?He is?awaiting a court decision in Britain on his extradition to Sweden to face sexual assault allegations.

"We liked a lot of the WikiLeaks revelations. It was very much in sync with what Russia Today has been reporting about the Arab Spring, and about the duplicitous policies of the US and its allies all along," Peter Lavelle, a senior journalist with RT told the Christian Science Monitor.

"I think the Russian government will be pleased [to see Assange working on RT]. It's a soft power coup for Russia," Lavelle said.

I Didn?t Think Samsung Could Top Its Anti-Apple Ads? Until I Saw These

Screen shot 2012-01-24 at 2.55.00 PMNext weekend is like the Super Bowl of commercials. Well, actually, next weekend is the Super Bowl (the real one), which is also much like a Super Bowl... for companies... with regards to their commercials. Maybe I should try a different analogy. Either way, next weekend is big for most companies and Samsung is getting started early with its latest "Apple fanbois are silly for waiting outside" campaign.

Chanel aims sky-high, and Armani courts A-list (AP)

PARIS ? On day two of Paris's frantic three days of haute couture collections, Chanel took the fashion crowd to the skies and highlights included super-sexy, celebrity-filled Armani Prive.

Tuesday's haute couture shows felt more flashy than in previous seasons ? perhaps owing to confidence after some fashion houses revealed rising sales figures during last year.

The Giorgio Armani Prive show was a glitzy affair and judging by its profits, it can afford to be: sales rose 50 percent in 2011 despite the sluggish economy.

Sitting on the front row of the Italian designer's show, US Vogue Editor Anna Wintour quipped: "Doesn't couture always buck the trend?"

French mega-brand Chanel would certainly agree, billing its own couture show as the biggest spectacle yet. Inside a reconstructed jumbo jet, guests ? including many from Asia ? were treated to a showy presentation.

Another of the day's big collections came from Givenchy, direct from the universe of its imaginative designer Riccardo Tisci, who led revellers around a curious and luxurious exhibition-like collection.

Under Tisci, the French brand has also seen success in the past 12 months, reporting year on year profits of 5 percent.

Haute couture is an artisan-based method of making clothes that dates back over 150 years. The garments, shown in collections in Paris twice a year, are bought by a core group of no more than 100 rich women around the world. Creations range in price from euro15,000 to over euro100,000 for wedding dresses.

CHANEL

It was blue-sky thinking for Karl Lagerfeld, as he treated guests to a jet-set experience in Chanel's spring-summer collection.

The wet Paris morning failed to dampen the mood outside the imperial Grand Palais, as guests waited excitedly to see the inside theme ? always a closely-guarded secret. The "Cocos" ? as one fashionista called Chanel followers ? were led nervously down a space-age passage.

There were gasps as they reached the catwalk: a life-size jumbo-jet reconstructed complete with luggage lockers, walkways and even a Champagne trolley.

On the runway, signature Chanel skirt-suits were given a retro flight attendant makeover with wide bateau collars in pastel colors.

It was as if stiff-suited Karl Lagerfeld had finally decided to relax into the flight as soft, floaty floor-length silhouettes replaced last season's more fitted, shorter and architectural look.

Speaking backstage in the reconstructed cockpit, Lagerfeld said that blue was used because it's an optimistic color.

Revolutionary the show was not, but the Chanel brand is definitely flying steady with reason to be excited about the future. A strong clientele, and robust business mean that like other couture-producing labels, they are bucking the downtrend in a gloomy financial climate.

GIORGIO ARMANI PRIVE

Giorgio Armani proved once again that his Armani Prive collection is one of the sexiest tickets in town.

A noisy media scrum was triggered Tuesday when actresses Cameron Diaz and Jessica Chastain took their seats, delaying the start of the show.

A black-and-green jacquard silk bustier and ample skirt shimmered with a bodice of black micro-sequins. A flared bustier dress teemed with tiny sequins like green snowflakes.

"I love the green look, so stylish and so elegant with the embroiderings," said Chastain, star of "The Help," which was nominated for an Oscar for Best Picture on Tuesday.

The last of Armani's 44 pieces got whoops from spectators: a stunning but restrictive mermaid dress with flounces embroidered with green degrade crystals. The model-cum-siren struggled to get one foot in front of the other, stumbling at one point.

Apparently no one told her that mermaids aren't supposed to walk.

STEPHANE ROLLAND

A strict palette of red, lime green, black and ivory, and fabric in its purest form, met the fashion set for French designer Stephane Rolland's highly-sculptural offering.

Inspired by the work of kinetic artist Michel Deverne, Rolland's rich floor-sweeping gowns were kept ultra-simple to show off the movement of the materials.

Clean silhouettes, combined with sweeping waist appendages and expert draping, were broken up only by the odd shiny breastplate or waistband in gold metal.

But you couldn't help but feel that Rolland fell short of the mark. His aim was crystal clear: displaying the natural beauty of fabrics such as silk jersey, gazar and organza that often are embroidered to death in couture. However, the collection suffered from its simplicity and became a bit repetitive.

For the finale piece Rolland's muse-of-the-day, former supermodel Yasmin Le Bon looked uncomfortable walking in a humongous red silk jersey ball gown with assorted lacquered metal appliques. She had a right to be nervous: weighing in at 50 kilos (110 pounds) and 45 meters (147.5 feet) of fabric at its longest point, the train had to be carried by two assistants.

GIVENCHY

Givenchy's Riccardo Tisci opened the doors of his cabinet of curiosity on Tuesday, in what was surely the most imaginative fashion presentation in Paris's haute couture week.

Giant art-deco crystal earrings were shown alongside studded leather jackets and 1930s nubuck crocodile skin dresses.

Pieces were presented on mannequins in 18th century showrooms, just like the historic artifacts in the Louvre museum ? a stone's throw from the Givenchy salons in central Paris.

The fashion crowd ? so used to the frenetic catwalk ? relished the opportunity to study the pieces.

It was a Riccardo Tisci of contradictions, mixing up high and low fashion. A black crocodile biker jacket with embellishments sat on top of intricately beaded organza.

A scooped-front jewelled cocktail dress channeled the 1930s, but was mixed with a dark sporty undergarment.

One floor-length dress looked conventional enough, until it was opened to reveal studs all over the inside. It has apparently become the most-wanted piece of the collection.

Wednesday's haute couture shows include collections from Elie Saab, Jean Paul Gaultier and Valentino.

PFT: Ravens botch set up for Cundiff's missed kick

GYI0063799378_crop_450x500Getty Images

The pursuit of public funds for football stadiums carries with it certain obligations that wouldn?t apply if football teams would simply build their own buildings.? In Florida, the powers-that-be previously passed a law requiring venues that receive public funds to discharge an important public duty:? provide shelter to the homeless when the buildings are otherwise not in use.

To date, the three NFL stadiums located in Florida, along with numerous other facilities, have failed to comply.? Now, a pair of Republican legislators hope to force the stadiums to comply ? or to refund the public money previously received.

?These organizations have failed to follow the law for over 20 years,? Representative Frank Artiles (R-Miami) said in a statement, via the Tampa Bay Times.? ?This is the simply the State of Florida holding them accountable.?

Per the Palm Beach Post, Senator Mike Bennett claims that none of the 17 facilities that have received public assistance have complied with the law.? This includes Tampa?s Raymond James Stadium, Jacksonville?s EverBank Field, and Miami?s SunLife Stadium.

Under a measure introduced by Bennett, counties and/or franchises that have received state money would have to prove the existence of a homeless shelter for use on non-event evenings or refund the money.

According to the Times, SunLife Stadium has received $37 million, Everbank Field has received $35.1 million, and Raymond James Stadium has received $30 million.

It?s a great move.? Florida has subsidized pro sports franchises with a clear expectation that the pro sports franchises will help the homeless.? The pro sports franchises have pocketed the money while ignoring their obligations.

Here?s hoping that Stephen Ross, the Glazers, and Shad Khan will make this right without having to be forced to do so.

Quality of life for younger breast cancer patients more adversely affected than older women

Quality of life for younger breast cancer patients more adversely affected than older women

Monday, January 23, 2012

Quality of life in younger patients treated for breast cancer is seriously compromised and these women suffer from severe psychological distress, infertility, premature menopause, a decrease in physical activity and weight gain, according to a study by researchers at UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center.

The study, published in the peer-reviewed Journal of the National Cancer Institute, found that the mental issues faced by younger breast cancer survivors were more serious than the physical impacts compared to a general age-matched population of women who didn't have cancer and those more than 50 years old who did.

The study points to the need for oncologists to let these younger patients know from the beginning of their therapy what may happen to them after it's finished, said study lead author Dr. Patricia Ganz, director of cancer prevention and control research at UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center.

"We know that educating and providing younger breast cancer patients with information about what they might experience once their treatment ends is very helpful," said Ganz, who has been conducting research on quality of life after cancer treatment for 25 years. "If they know what to expect, their anxiety level will be greatly reduced. Up to now, oncologists have not done a good job of preparing these women for what will come."

Reducing anxiety is crucial, Ganz said, as pre-clinical studies have shown that stress can promote cancer growth and spread in animal models. A study by Jonsson Cancer Center researchers published in 2010 in Cancer Research showed that chronic stress acted as a sort of fertilizer that fed breast cancer progression, significantly accelerating the spread of disease.

The need to prepare younger breast cancer survivors for any adverse effects they may experience and seek ways to address those problems is vital as more and more younger women are surviving their cancer diagnosis due to improvements in early detection and treatment, Ganz said.

"A cancer diagnosis can challenge younger women with issues that don't impact older patients," she said. "A younger breast cancer patient may have young children and may be worried about living to raise them to adulthood. A younger breast cancer patient may not have had children yet and may be faced with infertility following her treatment or may return to the dating scene following treatment. We need to find ways to reduce the stress and anxiety that dealing with these issues may create."

Ganz recently received a grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that will fund a leading-edge program that seeks to enhance outcomes for young breast cancer survivors in the Los Angeles region. The program is being done in collaboration with the Jonsson Cancer Center, the UCLA-LIVESTRONG Survivorship Center of Excellence and the Simms/Mann ? UCLA Center for Integrative Oncology.

The three-year, $700,00 grant will focus on making life after breast cancer better for women aged 21 to 45 in Los Angeles County by funding a program designed to meet their unique needs, Ganz said. UCLA is one of seven organizations nationwide to receive funding for this focus on young breast cancer survivors. The resources and strategies developed in this diverse and populous region will serve as a model for other organizations across the country.

Services will be offered to these women through the UCLA Health System and with collaborators at Torrance Memorial Medical Center and the South Bay Cancer Survivorship Consortium, as well as the Olive View-UCLA Medical Center, a public hospital in northern Los Angeles County which treats mostly minority women who are underinsured or who have no insurance.

"These three health systems provide breast cancer services for a substantial number of ethnically diverse, newly-diagnosed women with breast cancer under 45 years old. They see about 225 new cases annually," Ganz said Ganz. "We estimate that there are hundreds of young breast cancer survivors who are being followed in these institutions, who will directly benefit from the programs that we will develop."

Ganz anticipates such services might include a regional resource with information and assistance in obtaining fertility preservation services, a website that hosts specialized information about community and hospital resources for younger women with breast cancer, as well as specialized programs to meet the unique psychosocial needs and concerns of this population.

Ganz also has received a grant from the Susan G. Komen foundation that is testing the practice of mindful awareness, a form of meditation, as a way to combat stress and anxiety in younger breast cancer patients.

For the Journal of the National Cancer Institute study, Ganz and her team did a review of studies that focused on overall quality of life, psychosocial effects, menopause and fertility-related concerns and behavioral outcomes related to weight gain and physical activity. The 28 studies reviewed were published between January 1990 and July 2010.

Ganz said that weighing therapies with the thought of quality of life after treatment in mind may help reduce some of the issues these younger women face.

"By tailoring adjuvant therapy regimens and giving cytotoxic therapy only to those who may benefit, we can mitigate some of these side effects, but the long life expectancy for these young women also provides a window of opportunity for cancer prevention and health promotion activities," the study states.

Former kidnap victim Elizabeth Smart engaged to marry (Reuters)

SALT LAKE CITY (Reuters) ? Elizabeth Smart, who was kidnapped at age 14 from her Salt Lake City home and held for nine months in a case that gripped the nation, is engaged to be married with a wedding anticipated for the early summer, a family spokesman said on Friday.

Smart, now a 24-year-old missing child advocate and sometimes TV news commentator, has not publicly identified her fiance, spokesman Chris Thomas said.

"Elizabeth got engaged this past weekend," Thomas said in a written statement. "A date for the wedding has not been set but the couple anticipates early summer."

"While she plans to be very publicly involved with her child advocacy work, she has decided she wants to keep the details of her personal life private," Thomas added.

Smart was abducted at knifepoint from her bedroom in June 2002 by a homeless street preacher, Brian David Mitchell, and was repeatedly raped and forced to wander with her captor from town to town for nine months.

She was ultimately freed after being spotted by passers-by in a Salt Lake City suburb in 2003. Her kidnapping shocked Americans, and the exhaustive search for the missing teen was covered exhaustively in the U.S. media.

Mitchell was convicted in 2010 of kidnapping and unlawful transportation of a minor across state lines to engage in sexual activity. He was sentenced in May to life in prison.

Smart testified during Mitchell's trial, describing her time as his captive as "nine months of hell."

Mitchell's wife, Wanda Barzee, was sentenced to a 15-year prison term in 2010 after pleading guilty to conspiracy and cooperating with prosecutors in the case against Mitchell.

ABC News in July announced that it had hired Smart, who has shown composure since her release from captivity, as a contributor on stories about missing persons.

Nicki Minaj Delays Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded

Young Money rapper softens the blow of sophomore album's delay by premiering her 'Stupid H--' video.
By Nadeska Alexis

Back in November, Nicki Minaj announced that her sophomore album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, would debut February 14, giving fans a little something extra to look forward to on Valentine's Day. Now, there's been a change of plans. Just a couple of hours after premiering the video for her latest single, "Stupid Hoe," on Friday (January 20) Minaj announced that the album would be delayed until April.

"New Album Date: April 3rd. Pink Friday: ROMAN RELOADED," she wrote to her throngs of followers on Twitter. "But have no fear. Tons of surprises before then ;). Love Always, HB."

Fans weren't thrilled to hear about the delay, but the new video for "Stupid Hoe" was enough to tide them over momentarily. In the colorful clip, directed by Hype Williams, Nicki is in full Barbie mode with bright makeup, her signature pink wig and prosthetic body parts, and she even gets a little ferocious, morphing into a caged tiger. With the sexy, bubblegum effect of the video, it's almost easy to forget that the track throws a few harsh words at her female critics, most notably Lil' Kim.

When "Stupid Hoe" originally premiered in December, the song held the first clue that Minaj might perform at Super Bowl XLVI ("2012 I'm at the Super Bowl," she raps), and the video confirms that suspicion. In the midst of the outrageous colors and special effects, the video cuts to a sign that reads "2012 Super Bowl," which means the Young Money rapper will likely perform alongside headliner Madonna.

After premiering the video, Minaj proceeded to retweet the overwhelmingly positive responses from her Barbz, who will likely be thrilled when she releases the album's second video for "Roman in Moscow." In December Minaj told MTV News that the visuals would set the stage for Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded.

" 'Roman in Moscow' is like a teaser to Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded," Minaj said. "When I say it's a teaser, it's like a trailer to the movie, it's like setting the stage, and I just wanted to touch the surface. It's the wackest thing on Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded."

Did Nicki's new video tide you over until the release of Roman Reloaded? Let us know in the comments!

Bonus season not as festive for bank CEOs

JPMorgan Chase, the largest U.S. bank, posted record profit for 2011. Morgan Stanley's latest quarter topped expectations as the bank trimmed costs and cleaned up mortgage-related problems. (AP) ? JPMorgan Chase, the nation's largest bank, posted a record profit for 2011. That didn't translate into a bigger bonus for CEO Jamie Dimon. Morgan Stanley's latest quarterly results topped expectations as the bank trimmed costs and cleaned up problems dating from the financial crisis. But CEO James Gorman saw the value of his stock awards for the year fall by half.

Across their ranks, Wall Street banks are curbing bonus pay for last year's performance, which was marked by big drops in stock prices and still-hefty costs for mortgage-related problems. In the last three months of the year, fear about the European debt crisis made the stock and bond markets volatile, and clients of all the major banks shied away from mergers and acquisitions and public offerings of stock. That sharply reduced investment banking and underwriting fees. The banks also faced a surge in populist anger, as the Occupy Wall Street movement went national.

Financial stocks were some of the worst performing in 2011. While the S&P 500 Index finished the year flat, Morgan Stanley shares plunged 44 percent, JPMorgan dropped nearly 22 percent and Goldman Sachs Group Inc. tanked 46 percent.

Compensation followed the downward trend. In a closely watched and politically charged gauge, JPMorgan Chase & Co. revealed earlier this month that it set aside 36 percent less than the year before to pay its investment bankers. Morgan Stanley shed 700 workers last year and capped the amount that workers can get in their bonuses immediately, deferring anything over $125,000. Rival Goldman eliminated 7 percent of its employees and cut 2011 pay by 21 percent.

And it appears the banks' CEOs are not immune. On Friday, Morgan Stanley's regulatory filing showed that the value of Gorman's stock award for the year dropped to $5.1 million from $10.2 million in 2010.

Gorman, who became CEO two years ago, has been slimming down the bank, selling off units like a mortgage servicing division and an asset management business. He's been emphasizing divisions like wealth management, which provide smaller returns than some investment banking operations but also carry a lot less risk because they're based on fees rather than markets. Unlike JPMorgan and some other big banks, Morgan Stanley doesn't have a large consumer deposit base to rely on when its investment bank stumbles.

JPMorgan's Dimon received restricted stock worth $12.6 million and stock appreciation rights reportedly valued at roughly $5 million for 2011, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission Friday. That compares with about $17.1 million in stock and SARs that he was granted for 2010.

For the full year, JPMorgan posted a record profit of $19 billion, up from $17.4 billion in 2010. But the bank struggled amid the choppy financial markets, which hurt investment banking fees in the fourth quarter. The bank also disclosed that it spent $3.2 billion last year to fight lawsuits, almost all of them over poorly written mortgages. That's down from $5.7 billion in 2010, but Dimon acknowledged there's still a "huge drag" on earnings five years after the bubble burst.

Complete compensation details, including the value of the executives' 2011 cash compensation, perks and benefits weren't disclosed. None of the banks have filed annual proxy statements, which include those financial details.

Dimon received a total pay package for 2010 valued at $20.8 million, including a salary of $1 million and a cash bonus of $5 million. Gorman received compensation valued at $15.2 million, including a salary of $800,000 and a cash bonus of $3.9 million.

The Associated Press formula calculates an executive's total compensation during the last fiscal year by adding salary, bonuses, perks, above-market interest the company pays on deferred compensation and the estimated value of stock and stock options awarded during the year. The AP formula does not count changes in the present value of pension benefits. That makes the AP total slightly different in most cases from the total reported by companies to the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The value that a company assigned to an executive's stock and option awards for 2010 was the present value that the company expected the awards to be worth to the executive over time. Companies use one of several formulas to calculate that value. However, the number is just an estimate, and what an executive ultimately receives depends on the performance of the company's stock in the years after the awards are granted. Most stock compensation programs require an executive to wait a specified length of time to receive shares or exercise options.

Royal crackdown on fascinators at Ascot racecourse (AP)

LONDON ? Organizers of the Royal Ascot race meeting say they're tightening their dress code by banning fascinators from the royal enclosure.

New rules put out by organizers Wednesday are the latest in a series of changes and clarifications put out by those behind the super-elite horse racing event held each June.

Ascot is a highlight of the British social calendar and organizers have been fighting to control the proliferation of provocative dresses, outrageous accessories and revealing tops.

Other rules introduced or reinforced Wednesday include the requirement that women must wear hats and clarify that dresses must fall below the knee.

The new rules also state that men must wear a suit and tie in some areas. Those in the royal enclosure must wear a top hat.
